Do you work for this company? I'd be interested to hear what it's like and why so much of their website is focused on employees.

Yes, I do. I'm one of the Analyst/Programmers there. I'm not sure what you mean about the website, but I didn't compare it to a large amount of different employer websites.

In general, the coworkers are pretty good, and it's a somewhat casual atmosphere. Weekly Bagels and Donuts and Ice Cream first birthdays do help boost morale a bit.

In terms of actual work, it's sort of a slow increase of responsibility, rather then a tiered one. There are a few hierarchical tiers as well, but it's generally pretty relaxed. Once you've worked on a project a few times, you are often the go to person for that project.

I'd say being able to politely and detailedly email people, spot small things in code, find potential problems before submission, clarify specifications, and the ability to reconstruct what you did on something you worked on several years ago are all important skills.

Pay Raises/Benefits seem relatively generous to me, but again I didn't do a lot of comparison between jobs. Depending on the type of work you are doing, it potentially allows you to get your name mentioned in the acknowledgments in published medical papers, which has happened to me.

Let me know if you would like more details.

I realized I didn't post the contact information in the previous post. So if you or anyone else are interested in applying, please contact Mary Lamb at (301) 680-9770, or send an e-mail to jobs@imsweb.com

Job Opening: San Diego, CA
Industry: Computer Science
Organization: UC San Diego, Center for Networked Systems
Salary: $3,935 - $5,458 /month

Link to posting: http://jobs.ucsd.edu/bulletin/job.aspx?cat=information&sortby=post&jobnum_in=50564

DESCRIPTION:
The Center for Networked Systems (CNS) is an Organized Research Unit dedicated to bringing together leading faculty, students, and companies to investigate the most challenging, interesting, and important problems in computer networks, and to train our students to continue their leadership throughout their careers. The Systems and Networking Research Group (SysNet) is a key unit in the Center's research complement, bringing together a talented and forward-looking group of graduate students, faculty, post-doctoral researchers, and programming staff to undertake projects that solve and explore some of the most relevant and exciting issues in systems and networking research. The SysNet Group operates a computing facility that serves CNS and Computer Science and Engineering department faculty, researchers, programming staff, graduate students, and instructional users (approximately 250 machines with 50 Lab users and 30 instructional users at any time). The computer facility consists of computer servers, file servers, and workstations running Solaris, Linux, Windows, and Mac Operating Systems. The computing facility also maintains the Lab's network, printers, and web portal.

Under general supervision of the Director of CNS, work as part of the SysNet Group's computing team to support research, administrative, and instructional computing in a heterogeneous computing environment. While a large portion of the job will entail the day-to-day tasks associated with system administration and maintenance, another significant portion will be dedicated to the customization and optimization of software and hardware to meet the needs of a dynamic and highly creative research group, which conducts a series of ongoing projects. This latter function will necessitate a particular skill set above and beyond the normal level of competency associated with most systems administration positions: a willingness to learn new skills as needed, to embrace the use of new technologies as required, and to explore novel solutions to currently unsolved problems in collaboration with others. The incumbent will also be responsible for providing technical information to faculty, to students, and to administrative and research staff on the computer systems, software, and data available in CNS.

Notes:

This job is perfect for CS nerds who love hacking, thinking creatively and coming up with solutions to programming challenges, know a bunch of Linux/scripting/programming (bash, python, C++), and like working with students. The environment is great, and your job will typically vary from day to day. We build a lot of our infrastructure from scratch, and also get access to a lot of cutting edge and prototype technology from major companies. The learning curve is pretty steep, but the environment is pretty relaxed and everyone knows a ton about CS. It seems like the perfect job for the right goon or goonette.

What I'm looking for: Windows administration or systems analyst work
What I'm NOT looking for: Sales, QA, Entry-level help desk

Where I'm looking: Seattle-Tacoma area, Portland OR, Boulder, CO

Looking for a job in New York, NY

I'm graduating in 3 weeks and haven't found a job or anything yet, so I figured it wouldn't hurt to post here.

Experience: I'm looking for something entry-level, but I've worked various part-time jobs/internships and have been very involved on campus so I wouldn't say I'm completely inexperienced. Last summer I interned at a film festival and maintained contact with about 100 filmmakers. I also have 3 years of experience running a three-day convention at my college, which has about 500 attendees and a $10,000 budget. Currently I work on campus at media resources, where we loan out and troubleshoot equipment such as projectors/microphones/speakers/etc.

Education: Graduating with a BA in Film & Japanese from Vassar College, current GPA is 3.6

Skills: Strong communication & organizational skills. ~9-10 years of HTML and CSS, proficient at Photoshop, MS office and Final Cut Pro. Beginner's knowledge of Illustrator, In Design, PHP and MYSQL. 7 years of Japanese.

What I'm looking for: Ideally something in the entertainment industry, but I am really open. I want something stable and full time, and am confident I could do anything administrative in just about any industry. I have a lot of event-planning and management experience, and am also interested in getting into PR/Marketing. I'm also a bit of a techie and have applied to a paid internship at a web development company, so like I said, I am open to pretty much anything. But something along the lines of production assistant or anything at some kind of media or PR company is ideal.

What I'm NOT looking for: Unpaid internships!

Where I live: New York, NY

Where I'm looking: I really want to stay in NYC.

When I can start: May 24

Requirements: Full time, health insurance, but I'm not picky

So I've been working as the lead editor at a magazine for several years now. I was the only editor at this publication, the only one who knew anything about AP Style, and now evidently they can't afford me.

We ran a monthly publication with web publishing that was updated several days a week, almost every day during football season. Not only did I edit everything and maintain the site, I wrote quite a bit. I dabbled in graphics, mainly in updating the site, and used photoshop quite a bit. I managed writers, conducted interviews, transcribed, ran our forums, a little bit of everything. I ate 7-11 sandwiches for two weeks on assignment in Wisconsin, covering an event.

Five years have passed and I've gained a great deal of experience, but it seems hard as hell finding editing jobs. I don't have a degree, although I did go to collegem took journalism courses, worked at a daily college paper, and that was a stepping stone to my magazine job.

I've applied to several journalism-related openings via craigslist but no takers. I even looked at a couple internships. At this point I've almost given up trying to find a media-related gig and I'm looking at warehouse jobs. I need fulltime work. But honestly, I'd settle for even a part-time editing/media job right now.

I'm based in Houston, Texas, but I'd move almost anywhere for an opportunity.

Job Seeker San Francisco, CA

Education
BS in Accounting, 150 hours for CA CPA requirement

Experience
I have a BS in Accounting, 150 credit hours and I will be a CPA as soon as my paperwork is finished processing. I worked about 18 months at a huge corporation as a Senior Financial Analyst doing standard stuff like account reconciliations, preparing journal entries, intra-company AR, and other lower level corporate stuff. Worked here while studying for the CPA exam. The last 18+ months I have worked in public accounting at a regional firm in North Carolina doing mostly financial statement work. Lots of audits of companies up to about 10 million in revenue, 401(k) audits, reviews of smaller companies, ect. I'd break it down to about 6 months of corporate and partnership taxes, a very small amount of individual returns, and the rest audit and review work.

Skills
Documentation of audit work, crosstrying references to workpapers, internal controls testing, really every aspect of the audit as I was the sole staff member on audits of companies with up to 10 million in revenues, inventory controls, tax return preparation, fixed asset maintenance, proposing journal entires, general ledger maintenance, and so on

What I'm looking for
Full time in any accounting position which would utilize some skills. I am not really interested in really low level stuff because I am over qualified for that.

What I'm NOT looking for
Part time, seasonal, internships (non paying), sales positions, or positions with commission-based salaries.

Anywhere I can live in San Francisco and get to pretty quickly without a car. I don't live there yet so I can move near the BART if needed.

I'm 4 months into an IT director slot with a highly successful contract research organization in the Pharma sector. I've got 200 users, significant development work (sharepoint/SQL/financial reporting) and a fairly busy helpdesk to run.

tl;dr: I'm over-tasked and under-resourced.

I do NOT have a req or approval to hire yet, be warned.

My theory is that if I locate the perfect candidate I can stuff the resume down management's throat and get the req based on the right person. In my few months here I've gained a vastly good reputation and carry enough weight to get what I need if I stomp around enough.

Who do I want? Good question. My main goal is to get out of the helpdesk all together, maybe serve as tier 2. You'll have excellent problem solving capabilities, an understanding of basic M$ Os's/apps, and a bias for action. You'll have no problem operating outside 9-5 when there are incidents to manage, but the extra hours will be minimal. The bonus is that you'll have a drat fine mentor to take your career to the next level.

Buzzwords- If you nod on each or most of these please send me your CV: Sharepoint, SQL, Clinplus, Antiquated OS's (NT loving 4), salesforce.com, backupexec, Citrix, MPLS networks, Cisco pix/ISA, Five 9 predictive dialer, ITIL implementation, Active directory

I'm looking around for a new job. Where would you be located?

Sorry about that, was asked to move post from a new thread and forgot to carry subject over to this post. This company is located in Rockville, Md. 20 mins or so outside of DC. Remember, this is not an official position yet, but with the right talent I think I'll be able to justify it, so a little political maneuvering will be necessary on my part, and some patience on yours. I anticipate 1-2 months before I'm allowed to make an offer.

What do you expect the salary range for this position to be?

Since there's no open req, I expect to be part of the allocation process. Best guess is somewhere between 30 and 50k depending on experience.

Job Opening: Santa Monica, CA

I want to hire a goon. Again.

We're looking for a digital media assistant to do the grunt work - posting ads, running reports, taking screenshots. It's a great, just-out-of-college or I-hate-my-first-job-out-of-college-I-want-a-new-one kind of opening.

Looking for someone who wants to work in advertising (on the internet!) and knows something about analytics, economics or data.

PM me if you're interested or want more details.
