sants posted:you might like some of Chick Corea's stuff as long as he doesn't get too avant-garde for your tastes, he's at his most mainstream when he's with his Elektric Band or Return to Forever. with these groups it's usually jazz fusion but it has lots of latin influences. This is not really the kind of stuff I'm looking for, jazz fusion is kind of difficult to relax with. This is about the fastest I am thinking I want to go, and with without the heavily experimental stuff in those Chick Corea songs. signalnoise fucked around with this message at 13:22 on Feb 11, 2009 |

I recently discovered this band called The Pepper Pots. They are a currently active band from Spain (I think) that makes upbeat soul music from an era that's older than I am. I love bands that make new old music. HERE'S A LINK TO A GOOD'N I'm interested in more artists like this, either similarly making sort of anachronistic music, or just making the same style as this group from back when it was something you could hear on the radio.

I am looking for electro/house music along the lines of this and this, preferably it will be bass heavy and also very synth heavy, square waves and whatnot. However, if there is any magical mix of this that is also less busy, I don't know what I would call it, that's what I'm really after. I don't remember the last time I heard bass-heavy downtempo electro/house without a ton of drums, but that's basically what I'm looking for.

There's this French duo that has similarly rough, stabby synth, but leans towards more funky poo poo instead of just being crunchy, Jupiter - Mama Used To Say https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zJxPPWVL_zk But this is the poo poo I think you actually want, Machinedrum - Do It 4 U https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ytCLHXGmuHY

Elentor posted:Thanks a lot, the moment I saw you recommending Sneaker Pimps I knew good stuff was on the way. Machinedrum and Capsule rocked. Jupiter was fat and dope and I like funky poo poo so it rocked as well. Sneaky Sound System ended up being the one that brought me right back to the days. I just listened to UFO and that's just great. So good. Can't thank you enough! Hey man it's good to have stuff work out so cool. Unfortunately I don't know tooooo much about that particular sound and I pretty much chalk it up as an Ed Banger Records thing. I was considering other recommendations, but they were not nearly as "hard" or whatever. However, if you feel like going deeper into that rabbit hole of choppy electronic that is relatively very soft, but still heavily "produced," I personally would look at Japan in the late 90's/early 2000's. Japan has a lot to offer with that. Some prominent examples of that sound here, keeping in mind that I know that these songs aren't nearly as heavy as the last post, but hey maybe you want something related but relatively light: Takako Minekawa - Plash https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=57LboHngkn4 Takako Minekawa is mostly recognized for being the voice of the "PUREISUTEISHON" sort of robot voiceover for the old Playstation commercials. m-flo (specifically producer Taku Takahashi) featuring Chops and Bahamadia - Expo Expo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oBtpQjy7iPo Taku Takahashi is pretty drat prolific and catches onto whatever the style of the time is while using choppy techniques quite a bit. Expo Expo is from 2001, and m-flo is still going today despite losing their vocalist for multiple albums. Rather than sitting idle, they just subbed in collab vocalists for 3 entire albums of collaborations, with each song suiting the style of whoever they were working with on that song. He often performs as a solo DJ for raves or whatever. His 2002 remix of Utada Hikaru's "Distance" is the earliest example I personally know of for chopping up vocals to make new melodies. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OAdKepqYzzQ Cymbals - Higher Than The Sun https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LExi3fMODyU This is gonna be the biggest departure, I think, but I like it. This is off the album "sine" which I assume is a reference to being so much more synth-based than their other albums. Cymbals broke up in 2003, and while the 3 of them went on to success in their own ways, the sound mainly lived on through Toki Asako, the lead singer, who still makes "light and happy" kinds of music with a bouncy electronic feel. Another DJ to look into maybe would be Towa Tei, who you'd know as the DJ for Deee-lite, known for Groove Is In The Heart, and who kept working and collaborating with the likes of Kylie Minogue and Bebil Gilberto.

His first album, "Luxury," is very much bouncy/disco but using sort of a frantically assembled collection of samples from Serge Gainsbourg era stuff. His albums following that are a bit more smoothly composed. Fantastic Plastic Machine - L'Aventure Fantastiquehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JQGd6IBD4eI And if for some reason you're still with me after that, then here's the most polarizing electronic weirdness I know of- Bubble-B or Bubble-B feat. Enjo-G if there's gonna be vocals that aren't from the samples. I don't know if this is an elaborate satirical prank or not, because sometimes it seems like it obviously is, like in Enjo-step https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YdVWYKWls8c which is a vocalized dubstep song, or Baribarisnackhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ZXu6ZSzSqA which is a drum and bass song where they just drop snack names over the track. There are many videos on youtube of Bubble-B just remixing old Japanese commercials, such as https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OWyrFonsAZM. almost there posted:hey goons, Refer to this list: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Catholic_musicians#Composers_who_wrote_Catholic_sacred_music The Catholic church was largely responsible for much of classical music being kept around at all, in terms of specific pieces, and they had rules that made more pleasing arrangements very difficult to make, as tritones and other such happy chords went counter to what the church wanted. Much of classical music from that era that remains accessible today is comparatively depressing simply due to the lack of these tools, as they are heavily used in pretty much any modern music you're likely to hear in any commercial use, whether selling mp3s, or in movies, or whatever. So yeah, if you want a bigass collection of depressing poo poo, as usual you need to look no further than the Catholic church. There are loads of classical songs that aren't Christian that are still depressing, or at least rather bleak, but still good, due to intentionally used themes. My personal favorite of that would be Frederic Chopin's "Raindrop" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J_6APTb3RNQ, which was inspired specifically by rainfall, with repeated notes representing that rain. It opens rather peacefully, but quickly becomes oppressive.
