Yawning Man, especially their earlier, cleaner stuff is pretty close. Not at all funky or jazzy, but twangy, melancholy, and desert vibes.

If you like Tommy Guerrero, you might like desert rock in general, of which Yawning Man are pioneers, alongside Fatso Jetson, Kyuss, Brant Bjork, Queens of the Stone Age, Mondo Generator, etc.

Digging Yawning Man but can someone clarify what makes this desert rock vs post-rock ala G!YBE and Mogwai, cause that's what I would have classified it as.

Technically, it's desert rock because the members are the original founders of the desert rock genre, which evolved in the Palm Desert/Palm Springs/Coachella/Indio area in California. All the guys in Yawning Man, especially Mario Lalli, were/are also involved in all the other original desert rock bands. Wasn't much to do out there but skate where you could and play music at generator parties out in the desert, and the fuzzy psychedelic stoner sound evolved. Current desert rock as a genre actually has picked up a bunch of European bands and gets pretty interchangeable with stoner rock.

But you're right, it's a short hop from there to the more stony post rock bands like Russian Circles or Red Sparowes to my ear. I think Yawning Man is definitely the most atmospheric of the genre. They're not quite as dissonant and chaotic as GSY!BE. There's not such a sharp divide between stoner rock, desert rock, post rock, psychedelic, sludge, doom, etc anymore.

The documentary Lo Sound Desert is a fantastic introduction to the pioneers of the sound if you're interested.

I would like recommendations for electronic stuff similar to Griz, Gramatik, and Pretty Lights. I especially like stuff with soul samples and horns. Old soul samples or stuff created specifically for the artist's work, like what Pretty Lights does. Not so much into dubsteppy stuff. I've looked into Bassnectar a little (too harsh, too clubby) and Big Gigantic, and they don't excite me much. There was this one artist, Arch Nemesis, but it seems like he hasn't done anything new in years.

I'm looking for some new suggestions for hip hop/rap. Specifically stuff similar to Asheru, Pyinfamous, or Sound Providers. I don't know if that qualifies as backpacker rap, but they don't show up on Youtube searches for that term. It's not so much the wokeness element that I like as the general sound - more piano and jazz samples, complex lyrics, calmer voices, lazier rhythms, etc.

I also like Aesop Rock, MF DOOM, Mos Def/Yasiin Bey, Talib Kweli, Tribe, all Madlib's stuff, Dilated Peoples, Del/Deltron/Hieroglyphics, Busdriver, Blackalicious. I don't have much interest in Atmosphere, Immortal Technique, Brother Ali etc right now.

I know that's really picky and specific, but Asheru only has like three albums and they came out 10 years ago. Yasiin Bey and Talib Kweli were supposed to do another Black Star album last year but that didn't happen.

Yeah, I'm really digging Apollo Brown, thanks for that. The album he did with Ghostface is extremely my poo poo. Mona Lisa is also a really enjoyable album. It's exactly what I was looking for.

Earl Sweatshirt confuses me. I like the producing, but something, maybe just my age, hates the mumble rap rhythm. His rhymes are interesting and I have no trouble understanding him, I just can't stand that cadence. I'm really trying not to hate modern mainstream hip hop because it's just a lovely knee jerk older generation thing to do. It's just my version of Randy Marsh's all new music sounding like fart noises. Even artists I can tell are probably pretty good like Dear Silas and Hopsin are hard for me to listen to because of that.

I do listen to instrumental stuff sometimes. My totally guilty pleasure is those lo fi hip hop youtube channels with the anime characters studying with a cat or something if I really need to get data entry or writing done. But as far as higher quality stuff, I'm always looking for recommendations. Separate post for Medeski, Martin, and Wood since they were mentioned. They are my single desert island band, hands down. Rest of my life in seclusion with only one artist to listen to forever, it’s them.
They can be tough to get into depending on what you randomly pick as your first listen. Here are my suggestions for albums (one track for each) to start with based on their very different tones.

Notes from the Underground is their first and most traditional album. Grand piano, stand up bass, drums.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ITjlyOFRAZ8

Groovy organ trio sounds on Uninvisible. This got them a lot of attention from jam band fans, and may have coincided with them touring with Phish.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oj68KYYpmHE

End of the World Party is pretty accessible. Some weird sounds, Medeski played a lot of mellotron on this album. But kind of a heavy album.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KHlWOs6Ca50

Combustication is kind of free but still fairly groovy.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QYWKRGSw7bI

The Dropper is very literally a “gently caress you, we’ll play what we want” to their label at the time. It gets bizarre.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D0_OzlxY528

Radiolarians was a three album series that I have a hard time putting logic to. It’s got a definite sound, but there’s a little bit of everything, traditional piano jazz, groovy organ stuff, wild free jazz, hard electric distorted sound walls, fun little ditties.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oJzwn47ODbQ
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cKsxUamuC5Y
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5jyD08qbIdM
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EKIgb1p6On8

And that’s just the surface. They’re supremely weird, innovative, and each one of them individually is a master at his discipline.

I've managed to find very little from other artists similar to that.Like, here's Enigma's "TNT for the Brain" for another example.

Anyone know of something similar? Or at least what this kind of stuff might be called?

Early Nitin Sawhney, maybe.

He's got a huge volume of work, though. I think most of his more recent stuff is a bit less ambient Indian, less electronic raga. For instance, he did the score to one of the big BBC nature docuseries.

This two acts are maybe slightly disparate, but I'm looking for acts that have the slightly hypnagogic feel of Portishead or Chromatics; I not so interested in the ethereal as much as a slightly decayed, hauntological vibe.

Any suggestions? I know and like the likes of the Cocteau Twins, but the vibe I'm looking for is more haunted than haunting.

Massive Attack?
