I really like The Books, The Avalanches, and My Life in the Bush of Ghosts, and the only common thread here seems to be the sampled vocals so can anyone recommend more bands like this?

Any good dark acoustic sounds out there? Not the song but just the music.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "dark" but maybe check out Elliot Smith? Start with Needle in the Hay.

Anyone recommend some music in the vein of Aphex Twin?

Experimental electronic, ambient, D&B, atmospheric stuff, minimalist, whatever. Not necessarily only electronic music. I enjoy the acoustic pieces on Drukqs.

And I just found this album which I'm really digging:

The Books are ridiculously good. Start with Lemon of Pink, which is their best album, then pick up Thought For Food, The Way Out, and Lost and Safe.

I recently renewed my love for bluegrass, dixieland, traditional mountain and Southern songs. I'm talking about songs like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DZUNQvorokg&feature=related
Actually pretty much anything from the O Brother Where Art Thou? soundtrack.
Thing is I don't know anything about this music, if what I listed above is even correct in describing it, and I don't know what I'm searching for when I try to look up similar music. Can I get some suggestions on who/what to be searching for?
I quite like Iron Horse. They're mostly known for covering other bands, but they have a pretty traditional bluegrass sound.

I used to be a really big indie fan a couple of years ago but my tastes switched over to more mainstream pop last year. Well I just listened to a bunch of my old indie stuff and my love has been renewed. So now I'm wondering if anyone can recommend any new material that I might like?

My tastes run mostly to dark synthy sounds (The XX, Hurts) or electropop girl vocals (La Roux, Little Boots). Anyone able to help out?
You might enjoy YACHT. They only have one good album, but See Mystery Lights is really a lot of fun.

I love Devo's "Are We Not Men," where should I go next? They've released a ton of material, and I'm curious as to which albums are worth picking up. Same with Blondie post-Parallel Lines. I have their first three albums, although I don't think Plastic Letters is as good as the other two, and I've heard really mixed things about their later stuff. What's good?

If you're feeling really brave listen to the Hardcore Devo series, its their early work. It is very very out there and raw, but still listenable and fun.
I really like their punkier stuff, so I'll definitely check that out. And I'm not too worried about their later work being weak and commercial and silly. Talking Heads are my favorite band, so I'm used to it. :sigh:

I've been in the mood for some more "up-beat" (pop, whatever) punky music lately anyone got any recommendations? My list for what I'm think of as "up-beat" would be Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys, The Offspring, and selected tracks from Sum 41's discography... Not much to go on but yea, any help would be swell.
You might like some of the ska bands popular in the 90s: Reel Big Fish, Rancid, Mighty Mighty Bosstones (I'm sure an actual ska fan can give better recommendations). You could also try Dropkick Murphys, Flogging Molly, and the Pogues. You may also like Dookie by Green Day, and some Jane's Addiction. That sort of Offspring-style pop punk got pretty popular in the 90s, so you've got a few bands to choose from.

Note that I don't actually listen to any of these bands. The closest I get to that I can recommend is Gogol Bordello, so somebody who's into that genre would know better.

This time I'm looking for music along the lines of Strangers 1800, or "Cowboy Dan" by Modest Mouse, or "Shallow Grave" by Dog Fashion Disco -- sort of a modern take on the classic spaghetti western sound. Are there any bands that do this as their primary sound?
Danger Mouse put out an album inspired by spaghetti western music, titled "Rome." It has some pretty high-profile collaborators, such as Jack White and Norah Jones and got pretty good reviews, so it might be worth checking out.

How about Neko Case? A bit more countryish, but along similar lines.

Also some adult contemporary singer-songwriters: K.D. Lang, Melissa Ethridge, Ani DiFranco, P.J. Harvey.

I've always thought Dirty Projectors sound a lot like MGMT, you might give them a try.

I like Ratatat's more recent stuff (mirando and grape juice city), and I'm trying to find other things with similar intensity and complexity, minus the drawn out aspect of say, Explosions in the Sky.

I like Maps & Atlases too, and that whole nameless zone of clean, fast, technical guitar work that resides somewhere between people's definitions of "math rock" and "metal".

Interesting drum work and technicality, without the side of math rock that goes "BRAAAAGGGHGHHGHGHGH"

Can you guy's suggest me anything of similar interest? I love weird/impulsive hip hop and electronica as well, Prefuse 73 and so on.
Try Foals, especially their first album Antidotes. You'll also probably like Battles, who are more on the technical side of things.

Sort of similar to this, I'm starting to get into New Wave. I went through an extensive Talking Heads phase two years ago so I'm good with Byrne & Company, but I'm specifically looking for songs that are energetic, upbeat, and... well, all that.

Basic drum rhythms, fast tempos, and possibly fast-moving bass players or gratuitous amounts of synthesizers. I'm running around Wikipedia's list of New Wave artists on Spotify right now, but if you were going to make a mix tape similar to the songs I've posted, what would you put on it?
Blondie and Devo are the other two really good New Wave bands after Talking Heads. Pick up of Devo's "Freedom of Choice" if you want their poppier synth-heavy stuff, and check out Blondie's "Parallel Lines" for a little rockier approach to new wave.

What bands are out there similar to Mumford & Sons? I can only listen to the Sigh No More album for so long until their new one comes out. Personally I think they pretty much hit the best balance of folk/rock without one encroaching over the other. In honesty though I'd prefer too little folk instead of too much, if I had to choose.
Local Natives and The Dodos are both pretty similar in the folk-rock with drums thing.

[edit]Does this sort of sample heavy noisy hip hop stuff have a generic name that would help me find more?
Not that I'm aware of, but try Little People, Wax Tailor, and Nightmares on Wax. I don't know how much sampling they do, but my Avalanches Pandora station also tends to give me a lot of RJD2, Portishead, and Massive Attack.

For similar sampling techniques but not hip-hop, try The Books, Zammuto, and Dosh, and of course David Byrne and Brian Eno's "My Life In The Bush of Ghosts." Four Tet does some sampling too.

Honestly, though, there aren't that many bands that really sound like the Avalanches, just some that share a few elements.

Not sparse, but really full sounding and almost droning, with layers. (edit: like, music that almost brings you to tears because it's emotional and awesome and...)
