Sad disco songs. The only two I can think of are the Bee Gees' Nights on Broadway and Tragedy.

This song randomly popped up on suggestions on youtube-- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n_Bq4MoS7r4 and I'm looking for more like it. The title says "femme darkwave" so I've been using that as a search, but it tends to bring up a lot of stuff like the Cure which I find to be too plodding/slow paced for me. Thanks for anyone who can help!

Some of Curved Air's better stuff might be up your alley.

I saw a performance of Jesus Christ Superstar last week and it kind of sucked, to be honest, but I looked up the original soundtrack and that was significantly better.

For me, the stand-out track is Everything's Alright, which is just this unbelievably lovely lullaby (at least until fuckin' Judas pierces the heavens with his horrible screeching interruption). Any suggestions for songs like that? Thanks!

Some of The Carpenters' stuff might appeal. Their biggest hits were gentle, bubble-gum light, except for Superstar.

Melanie's Brand New Key will either strike your fancy or be the most annoying song in the world.

Not as light, but here's Dusty Springfield

I hear a pretty strong Jethro Tull influence in the song you linked but the vocalist sounds like he belongs in a bluegrass band. I'd call it prog for lack of a better term, but I don't know if you're going to find much else like that.

McKendree Spring is slightly like this. McKendree Spring has more folk-country influence in them, but they'd occasionally do something out of left field.

Actually, these are the only two McKendree Springs songs I've heard that I like.

Man I wish I knew enough about music theory to tell you. Maybe because it sounds really sad but also really happy at the same time. Like something great is about to happen, but then not? Does that make sense?

The Beach Boys' artier stuff was constantly that line: You Still Believe In Me, She Knows Me Too Well, Leaving This Town and Don't Worry Baby are among better examples.

Maybe something like Yes' Turn of the Century.

So many good recommendations. Thanks everyone.

Was in the shower earlier and thought of one more. I rarely recommend late Queen, but I'm Going Slightly Mad.

Besides Fairport Convention, Sandy Denny's work with The Strawbs, especially "Oh How She Changed." Throwing in Curved Air as well. Phantasmagoria is probably the best of their albums, with "Marie Antoinette," "Not Quite the Same" and "Melinda (More or Less)" all being lovely.

Similar male folky of the same era is The Strawbs' From the Witchwood album. Everyhing beyond this and their work with Denny are a bit heavier, but if you like anything of theirs, their early stuff is underrated.

I just spent a bit geeking out with a friend about how much we love Metallica's Call of Ktulu, and I was wondering if any of y'all would be willing to share any instrumental (or heavily instrumental) songs y'all like that have a similar sense of gloom and foreboding.

Genre isn't super important to me, but I'm currently obsessing with how much that song captures such a specific, evil, maybe even tragic vibe.

You've probably already heard Pink Floyd's Echoes.

Others that come to mind:
Rick Wakeman: Judas Iscariot
McKendree Spring: God Bless the Conspiracy
Hawkwind: Paranoia (either part)
Brian Wilson: Mrs. O'Leary's Cow. Or the original version from the Beach Boys Smile sessions. Wilson was convinced it was causing actual fires in Los Angeles, one of the reasons Smile was abandoned.

Sim City 3000 is one of my favorite soundtracks ever, but I don't even know where to begin to find more songs or bands that sound like Night Life, Sim Broadway, and UpDown town. "Jazz" is way too vague, but if anyone wants to give any of those three songs a listen and help me out, I'd appreciate it. If I had to pick one song to represent what I want, it'd be Sim Broadway one it gets going.

I hear more than a little Rhapsody in Blue influence in Sim Broadway.

i think he's a zamrock musician from the 60s but I'm not positive
I remember his album cover is just his face, smiling, wearing a white cowboy hat, with a pink background maybe?

maybe his name is george or charles and his last name starts with O

ive been poking around youtube and google using those search parameters but I can't find him

Googling zamrock + cowboy hat gives me: William Onyeabor

Hello all! I need some good work songs. I don’t really know how to describe them other than songs like 16 Tons by Tennessee Ford, Another Cog in the Machine by The Cog is Dead and We All Lift Together by Keith Power. Songs about work but have that cadence to work to,if that makes sense. Like, Working in a Coal Mine is a song about work but it’s too upbeat and chipper.

Part of the Union is probably too fast, but still.

Also, know any classic rock songs that do a bass line thing like that first song, Like A Fire? I'm sure that style of emotional rock song with a bass line in focus like that is a thing I've heard, but I can't think of one offhand.

I hear a bit of Chris Squire there. Yes didn't do many pure love songs, but a few examples with prominent bass:

- Beyond and Before
- Sweet Dreams
- Roundabout

Minimal to no instrumental arrangements are preferred, i'd like the songs to be carried by the vocals mainly.

Brian Wilson/Beach Boys might be for you.

Lonely Sea

The Warmth of the Sun, which gets a lot of its emotion from the JFK assassination. Nobody's quite sure if it was already started before Kennedy was killed or right after, but they finished it soon after.

In My Room

Getting into more instrumentation, but still carried by the vocals:

You Still Believe in Me
