Just got my license and bought a 2010 DRZ400SM, how long until I'm backing it in? This is very important, I need to look cool!

Backed it in like a proper retard last night... Riding through some hills roads and long story short I'm not sure how it happened but I went for an up shift, somehow ended up selecting down, let the clutch out and became intimately acquainted with the effects of severe engine breaking on rear wheel stability. Ended up sliding 5-10 m. Bike and myself aren't too bad, it dumped all its fuel (I assume through the vent) so I couldn't get it started and I've just got a sprained ankle (wearing full gear at the time). My uncle whos worked on his own bikes all his life is giving it a look over today, fingers crossed there shouldn't be any mechanical damage. Absolutely rotten with myself for making such a dumb mistake, but I guess I should just be glad neither I or the bike are seriously damaged. Live and learn, all I can do.

So I've got torn ligaments in my ankle, will find out the full extent of the damage on Monday when my physio goes through the sonographer's report. Despite that, got back out on the bike yesterday for the first time, nervous but keen, just got to keep practising. Guess I should consider myself lucky I didn't end up worse off.

This is going to sound pretty dumb... I recently bought a DRZ400SM with a full Yoshimura RS-2 exhaust, I didn't confirm with the previous owner if it had been rejetted. Is there an easy way I can look at it to find out?

Thanks for all the advice! I'd forgotten a family friend is a performance bike mechanic (He mostly does sportsbikes/superbikes, so it didn't cross my mind talking about old school carbs and poo poo) with a dyno, so I'll probably start with chucking it on there and the visual check for the broken tamper seal. Will post performance results if anyone's interested.

Speaking of modding your bikes. Is there a cycle asylum general bike mechanics thread? I'm a mechanical engineer so really I should just be able to throw myself into this poo poo and work it out, but I'd prefer to have a bit of a resource for learning my way around working on the bike. Recommendations for other websites/wikis or books would be great too!

Thanks for all of the above, much appreciated! I grew up doing general car maintenance work with my old man who works on forklifts and increasingly modidying his own car as he gets older. So I know my way around tools and pulling things apart and putting them back together, as well as basics like how to not gently caress poo poo up over-torquing and the like. Not knowing much about whats important, what affects handling and performance, and what is within the realm of a non-specialist to perform, I'm not sure what I really want to do with my bike. That's why if I want to get my hands on a book that covers everything in at least some depth, then I can pick and choose what I think will make the bike better for me. I think I'd probably just start with some relatively minor mods, stuff I can get done and back on the road over a weekend. But once I get more confidence I'd like to buy either a poo poo bike and rebuild it or a project bike and try and make it race ready to really get some proper experience. I guess I should say I'm probably more interested in the process of working on the bike itself, rather than what I'll actually get back out of it performance wise.

Bicycle rims have been made out of aluminium for decades and you can take some pretty horrendous buckles out of them, I'm not sure why it would be any different for motorcycle rims with the right equipment.

Yerok posted:The spokes that were tight were working pretty hard but shockingly none of them were broken. Truly a testament to the XR series' reliability. Probably just causing a heap of excessive fatigue stress on the rim and would've ended up with the rim cracking eventually.

International SuperMoto ride day today! Weather was dog poo poo and raining on and off, but it didn't stop a group of 50 of us getting out in the twisties and pushing a bit harder than maybe we should have. Had an awesome time, and I'm already in the process of getting some leathers for my first track day at the end of the month.

A MIRACLE posted:When I bought the Yamaha I didn't do any wheelies because it was my only vehicle at the time and I couldn't afford to crash it. Still haven't done stunts or anything. The SoCal sumo class is super appealing to me. If you buy a motard you don't worry about crashing because they just keep on going.

I've crashed mine three times, I've spent about $60 replacing the top handle bar mount and a few hours sanding scratches out of the plastics.

My new 2019 SWM SM 500 R next to my mate's FS450. Basically a slightly revised and improved 2010 Husqvarna SMR 510. Goes great for the price and a big step up from my DRZ!
