Woo! Finally, a good Scale Modeling thread pops up. I've got 4 models in the works now; I'm waiting on some drier weather so I can get some paint on them. So this post isn't completely worthless, here's a pic of some of my finished work: Click here for the full 2048x1536 image.

Blistex posted:Missing Lynx (http://www.missing-lynx.com/index.htm) is probably the best scale modelling site on the net. They specialize in AFVs, but occasionally someone will post other vehicles. The upside is that they have a really knowledgeable community. The bad side is that pretty much every link you click on in the "Constructive Comments" (http://www.network54.com/Forum/110741/} section will make your your jaw drop in the detail, then get depressed when you realize you will probably never approach their skill. Seriously. Jesus Christ. I look at how far I've come personally, then I see work like that and just want to give up.

For the body, I'd say definitely go for gloss paint. Depending on how good a paintjob you can lay down, you won't even need a clearcoat.

That spitfire is the poo poo. I got a Tamiya Miata for Hanukkah and decided to turn it into a Showroom Spec Miata car. Spent a good chunk of yesterday working on the cage. The gap in front will be closed up with the dashboard. Shot in the dark, but does anyone have the Eunos Roadster kit? It comes with a hardtop and I'd love to get my hands on one, or at least get the part number so I can order one.

So, my local Hobby Lobby has this on clearance for $53.99 http://www.modelrec.com/search/product-view.asp?ID=11342 I'm not sure why it's on clearance (missing parts, etc) and I've never done anything non-automotive, but I kinda really want to pick this up. It should keep me busy for months.

Lots of armor and aircraft in this thread, but I'm posting this anyway. Finishing up a 1/24 scale garage I've been working on. I've got a few more little things to add (tires on the rack, more stuff on the shelf, Spec Miata racecar), but I wanted to get it off of my bench and into the cabinet. Just about everything in here aside from the obvious kit stuff is scratch built.

You could try some liquid masking products. I don't have any personal experience with them, but I know a lot of aircraft guys swear by it.

Arquinsiel posted:Has anyone tried mixing Tamiya paints to get different shades? I'm looking at doing a GW tank in WWII French camo and wondering how I will hilight the thing. I use Tamiya almost exclusively for cars. They mix really well with themselves, but they don't really mix for poo poo with other brands. Some combinations will take a bit of work to get mixed well, but they turn out nicely.

Just as a general FYI - I don't know how many of you guys do car models, but https://www.modelexpress.net is going out of business before the end of the year and he's slowly discounting his inventory to move it out. He's got a pretty good selection, but things are going fast. I suggest checking it out if you're looking to stock up.

Nebakenezzer posted:One of us! One of us! I'll go right along with this, but you need to be careful with superglue on clear parts. Depending on the glue, it may "frost" your parts and leave a cloudy residue on them. I've been using plain white Elmer's Glue-All on my windshields and headlights and haven't looked back.

I apologize for the lovely-poo poo cell-phone pics, but they were just quick grabs to send to him. It's stock with the exception of the spark plug boots and the headers. Boots are vinyl tubing from a Tamiya 1/12 bike kit and the headers are hand-bent solder. The kit is a reissue of an old Monogram kit.

SkunkDuster posted:That looks awesome! Can you get any more pictures of the interior? Does the license plate have any significance or did you just use the default decals? It is cool to see more planes, trains, and automobiles in the thread. It would appear that I am a huge retard and didn't take any pictures at all of the finished interior as it was waiting for the body to be done. Unfortunately, there's no real good way to get any other shots of it. Just know that it's flocked and uses all the kit parts. Well, except for the rear side windows. I managed to knock them both out while gluing the interior to the body. I panicked at first, but then just thought "gently caress it. They're rolled down." The license plate is just one of the kit plates. The other was something along the lines of "64 GTO" which I find stupid.

The thing with the tobacco/anti-tobacco liveries is that some of them are legit. I know some countries ban tobacco advertising outright, hence the GO!!!!!!! liveries for V. Rossi's Yamahas. I will admit though, it's lovely when it's done to a model and doesn't reflect the real thing. Edit: Also, that ^^^ is a cool idea. Or maybe a Redbull livery?

Speaking of nigh-complete disasters, I was all set for final assembly of the Camaro that I've been working on and upon attempting to join body to chassis (my favorite part), I managed to pretty much dismantle the interior completely. Luckily, it can all be re-glued, but I only wonder if it will do the same thing tonight when I reattempt it.

Ding! I use this for windshield/other windows with my cars. As long as you get a solid line, it will hold well and dry clear without fogging your plastic. CA glue will fog transparent plastic every time, but this has worked very well for me.

Bloody Hedgehog posted:Most people just shove a straw onto the nozzle of the can, and then spray it into a cup. The straw condenses the paint stream and gives it just enough time to coalesce back into a liquid. You certainly can use the method you described, but it can be a little dangerous and sometimes very messy. Pretty much this. I've seen guys either drill out the nozzle to fit the straw or use some sticky-tack or putty to stick the straw to the nozzle. Most guys will go straight to an airbrush-ready paint jar for convenience sake. You just have to be sure to let it air out for a while to let all the propellant out of the paint.

George Zimmer posted:In my opinion it's Tamiya and Fujimi. Fujimi's newer kits are fantastic, and they have a great selection. Tamiya doesn't have nearly as many new releases, but when they do, it's usually a top notch kit. Their LaFerrari will probably be amazing. Hasegawa and Aoshima aren't bad either. Hasegawa in particular is the only manufacturer making models of the Lancia Stratos and the Lamborghini Miura, two cars I love. If you know exactly what car you want to build, I might be able to help you out more. Seconding Tamiya here. I've only done one of their car kits (Mini), but I've done 5 or 6 of their bikes and the kits are a pleasure to build. I actually haven't built any Fujimi kits, but based on your reply, maybe I'll pick one up. I tend to build a lot of older American cars, so I usually stick to Revell and the like, but Tamiya is definitely something to look into for modern worldwide cars.

I feel the need to mention Elmer's again for gluing clear stuff. Spread Elmer's Glue-All around the edge of windshields and whatnot with a toothpick. It wipes off easily when it's still wet, dries clear, and won't fog your plastic. You need to be aware that it's not the strongest adhesive around, so make sure you get a good seal with it if you're going to be handling it a lot. I've had to redo a couple back windows...
