I saw swarms of Anna's and rufous hummingbirds today at Discovery Park here in Seattle. Most of them looked pretty young, so it seems like fledglings of both species learning to be territorial without having quite figured out how to spread further yet.

Lots of pictures ahead.

I like them all, but I love this one. Very nice.

The phone remote is a nice feature for this kind of shooting. I can sit inside, not scaring them away, and they'll just come right up to the feeder. This is a short video.

Adapted lenses gently caress up exit data. It's a Canon 300 f/4 FD on a fuji. Most shots were at 5.6, I think.

Oh, and he hangs around a place that raises turkeys and has a few half breed kids in jail. The farmed turkeys are pure white, and there are a couple of pretty gray girls, too, as a result of the big boy spreading his genetics. He would not let cars go by without a run at them.

A woman with a 500mm on a Nikon I think was shooting too, but unhappy because the only shots not of his rear end were on pavement. I felt her pain. He was great at getting behind poo poo until he got on the road.

Pretty much all birding comes down to knowing time and place. With home feeders, the place is easy, and it's really a matter of them adjusting to you on hummingbirds. These little bastards are so used to me now, they're giving me attitude.

That's amazing. How long did you have to try before you got good results? Did the birds mind?

Hummingbirds get used to you really quick. When I'm changing a feeder, they'll keep feeding, and when I bring a new one out, they'll start feeding while I'm hanging it. The camera sitting next to the feeder doesn't phase them at all.

I have one little friend who sits as look out for the ruby throated or rufous hummingbirds. It doesn't matter where I am, he goes to his post on the pole above "their" feeders and will chase off any of the broad-tails who come by. The broad-tails have their own feeder. The raptor, on the other hand, is an unwelcome guest since my chickens free range.

He's a handsome devil.
