Seriously, though, are the shittier fundamentalist sects anti-football or was that just complete bullshit?

They mean American football. The ball used in the sport is sometimes colloquially referred to as "the pigskin" but it has been covered in cow leather for many years now, not pig skin. And of course Muslims can't stand to touch anything pig related, which is why these crazies always get all masturbatory about tall tales of American soldiers rubbing their bullets in bacon grease before they fire them.

That sounds snazzy but you're more likely than not to run into small business owners who have done all of that, got lucky, and now use their past as a badge of entitlement. For every person who gets their lovely paycheck and blames capitalism, there are a hundred more who blame the government for taking so much out in taxes.

One article I like to share in situations like this is this GQ bit from Jon Ronson where he profiles six people at different levels of the income spectrum (i.e. he starts with the lowest paid guy and then keeps multiplying his income by five til he reaches a billionaire). I'm especially fond of the contrast between the guy who earns $10-20 million a year and the billionaire:

Nick Hanauer (Amazon investor) posted:

There's something unusual about Nick. For a multimillionaire, he doesn't have your average multimillionaire view. In fact, he's come to believe that the system he benefits so richly from is built on nonsense—specifically, the idea that "the markets are perfectly efficient and allocate benefits and burdens perfectly efficiently, based on talent and merit. So by that definition, the rich deserve to be rich and the poor deserve to be poor. We believe this because we have an almost insanely powerful need to self-justify."

And the biggest nonsense of all, he says, "is the idea that because the rich are the smartest, and because we're the job creators, the richer we get, the better it is for everyone. So taxes on the rich should be very, very low because we're essentially the center of the economic universe, the font of productivity." Nick pauses. "If there were a shred of truth to the claim that the rich are our nation's job creators, then given how rich the rich have gotten, America should be drowning in jobs!"

"So if the rich don't create the jobs," I ask, "who does?"

"The middle classes!" Nick roars. "A huge middle class will produce an unbelievable opportunity for capitalists."

I tell Nick about Rebecca and Dennis in Iowa, about how their health-insurance costs are preventing them from driving across the state to celebrate their anniversary, thus denying them happiness and small businesses across Iowa their money.

"I fly around in a $25 million Falcon 2000," he replies. "And they can't afford to drive across the state to celebrate their anniversary? It's not fair, and it's terrible for business. The best ideas in the world aren't worth jack poo poo unless you have someone to sell to."

B. Wayne Hughes (creator of the self-storage concept) posted:

Wayne's avuncular manner deserted him when he talked about what to do about the have-nots. "I remember an advertisement with an Indian in a canoe in a river," he said, "and tears are running down his face because he sees all the trash in the water, and he sees what's happening. That's how I feel about America. It's an emotional thing for me." He paused, and that's when he said, "I'm a little surprised to find out that I'm an enemy of the state at this time in my life. They talk about your 'fair share.' 'Are you paying your fair share?' Fair is in the eyes of the beholder." He paused. "I hope I don't come off like some big person...so conservative.... I believe in spreading it around, but I believe in doing it myself."

"So the trash in the river is higher taxes?" I asked.

"It's the idea of entitlement," he snapped. "That idea wasn't there in the history of this country. When the politicians said, 'Everybody is entitled to a house,' you saw what happened. And now you have 'Everybody is entitled to go to college.' Which is stupid! When I went to college, I had to drive a truck to pay. I had a partial scholarship, but I took care of myself."

"So you're saying everybody is entitled to college but should have to pay his or her own way?" I asked.

"Some people don't belong in college!" he said. "That should occur to you."

I understand why Wayne's great love in life is his stud farm. There's something very thoroughbred-horses about his view of the world. Perhaps the different ways Nick and Wayne made their money helps explain their politics. Nick sees an economy of luck. He got lucky, and he understands that fragility for what it is. Wayne sees an economy of earning, where those with exceptional talent or exceptional grit rise, as they should, to the top.

As far as I can tell the facts presented in this image are complete bullshit. I can't find any crime statistics or murder rate numbers that put the United States anywhere close to that. I also can't make any sense of exactly what the message is supposed to be here. The United States would be some kind of Utopia without cities that have a lot of (black) people? There's too much gun control that isn't working in these cities? The US is supposedly one of the worst countries in the world as far as murder rates, yet gently caress gun control? I don't know, someone help me out here.

There are pretty strict gun laws at events attended by the President. Those seem to work out pretty well.

Of course that's a very different situation than a broadly applicable municipal gun ordinance. But it's still a nice thing to throw back at the "gun laws only stop lawful gun owners :byodood:" crowd to see how they puzzle out the distinction.

Tell him he's a dumb loving blockhead for failing to realize that the fact that the law at issue in Romer couldn't even pass rational basis means that it definitely couldn't pass the more demanding standards of strict scrutiny. Like...the Court said "we don't even need to apply the hard test because this lovely law can't even pass the easy test!"

You should also tell him that his assertion that the definition of marriage as "one man + one woman" for thousands of years is pretty false, as demonstrated in the trial record of Perry v. Schwarzenegger. The plaintiffs brought Nancy Cott, an expert on the history of marriage, to the stand as an expert witness. Cott testimony runs entirely counter to your friend's assertion. The defendants, who held the same line that your friend does, did not bring a corresponding expert of their own to rebut Cott's testimony. Maybe your friend should try reading the District Court decision instead of spouting off about something that is demonstrably factually incorrect.

I expect a lot more of this coming up. It's a relatively minor thing, but why do conservatives hate the Post Office? I can send a piece of paper pretty much anywhere in the United States for under fifty cents and expect it to get there in less than a week. I can send a letter just about anywhere on the entire planet for about a dollar. I put it in a box outside my home and some guy in a truck shows up, almost daily, takes it, puts it on a plane or a boat or however the gently caress they deliver mail to Kenya should I be so inclined. For a dollar. How much more efficient could it possibly get, should they write the letter for me while I dictate to them?

I mean I probably know the answer is that the Post Office flies directly contrary to preconceived notions of government being universally terrible and thus is a sort of mental neon light disturbing the otherwise bland peacefulness of their broadly simplistic view of how society functions, but is there more to it than that?

What a terrible holocaust! Rather than banning abortion and pushing women into illegal back alley places that still kill embryos (and sometimes the mothers too), we need to bend all our efforts to solving the problems that cause unwanted pregnancies. We need comprehensive sex education, free contraceptives, full pre-natal care, WIC, child welfare, etc etc.

He'll usually start in on :911:not with my tax dollars:911: or :bahgawd:those sluts don't deserved it:bahgawd: and then I can throw his words back in his face: "But I thought you said this was a modern-day holocaust that kills more Americans than every war we've ever had combined. If it's a crisis, we need to use the most effective remedies available It's curiously convenient that the slaughter is just bad enough for coercion and moralizing, yet somehow not bad enough to spend any money to actually fix."

I have never had this experience. Instead, they mainly hem and haw and dissemble but don't really answer. I would love to find a hardcore choicer who's willing to move the discussion forward once I call them out on this, but usually raising thoughtful evidence-based opposition just leads to a dead end.

The best one-punch I employ is (1) Q: "Is abortion murder?" A: "Of course." (2) Q: "What should the punishment be for women who get abortions?"

It is so frustrating that that second question is never answered with anything besides "Hmmmmm, haven't thought about that one. I need to pray on that."

You are asking a lot of a wealthy and powerful organization composed of (putative) virgins who expect complete moral authority on the issue of the wonderously complex beast that is human sexuality, a topic about which they are supposed to have zero firsthand experience. The whole premise is illogical from the get-go.

VVVVVV EDIT: I get that pro-choice people are in favor of not punishing women. I'm talking about the fact that anti-choice people really try to avoid questions about punishments for the allegedly murderous women who get abortions.
