Thought I share some of my animation. You can see them here. They're all drawn by hand. The fishing cartoon was filmed onto 16mm film, while others are put together digitally. I'm actually trying to make cartoons with cels, only because most of my favorite cartoons were done that way. I'm hoping to shoot it onto Super 16mm film, a format I find fascinating. Normally it's used in indie films and documentaries. In the last few years I befriended a veteran animator named Mark Kausler (who worked on numerous films, including "Roger Rabbit"), who recently did a short film with cels, and it made me want to give it a shot. Nowadays the only cartoon in the world that's done on cels is "Sazae san" in Japan. Not that I never gave digital a shot. I have ToonBoom and do few things with it. This one was done with the software. In the meantime though, I'm doing comic books. Mister Beeg fucked around with this message at 17:11 on Jun 15, 2013 |

I should probably read all 22 pages of this thread to be sure, but is there anyone here who does traditional animation? I mean, actually draw on paper and stuff?

Awesome. I'm glad I'm not alone in that regard. Here's an animation that I've done a while ago. I drew this with grease pencil on overhead transparency sheets rather than paper. I'm hoping to make a film with these characters. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6UNQgRk-mKo

To anyone who animates with pencil, what do you use for animation paper? Personally, I just use normal copy paper (8.5 x 11) with a three-hole punch. I bought round pegbars from Lightfoot, Ltd. and use it on that. I wanna try animating for something that's suitable for the 16:9 aspect ratio, though. Animator Milt Gray told me that he uses 11 x 17 paper for that, so I'm gonna try that next time, once my new animation lightbox arrives.

I have many reasons for papers, but it's primarily for aesthetics, and that I'm just more comfortable with it. I do have a tablet but I rarely use it. I use ToonBoom to composite everything. (Agreed on not having to use expensive paper, although neonnoodle has a point about translucency. I should look around for cheap, super-thin paper)

Been talking to neonnoodle about animation, which helps a bunch. Thanks! I realized that I have some legal size papers in my stack. I should probably try those out for 16:9 ratio. I just got a new light table today from Lightfoot, so I'm dyin' to try it out.

I've been doing animation on and off for years, but with the pandemic going on, I decided to do it full-time. And honestly, I've been having fun. You can see a bunch on my YouTube channel, but here's one I'm particularly proud of, a crossover between my two webcomics. I co-animated this with a friend. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E6iNkAUM77M

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3UEkwliTaXw A little piece of animation I did, released last month. I'm in the middle of making a full-length cartoon featuring this character (she was also in "Cat and Kat", which I shared few posts up). One of her shtick is that she can take off her tail and change its shape (an idea influenced by the really old Felix the Cat cartoons), hence why I did this short as a test of sorts.

https://twitter.com/bakertoons/status/1381833992090095617 In my illustrations I normally don't use that much layers (just sketch, ink, and color layer for individual characters), but since doing animation I find myself using a lot. Even then, I don't really draw each body part on separate layers unless I plan to animate them moving. From a cartoon I'm working on

Still working on my cartoon. Gotten a significant chunk animated and colored, but still months way from being done. I wouldn't mind trying out hand coloring animation with inkwash! Just a matter of figuring out how to work around it. I have animation paper and Acme peghole puncher, so I got the essentials, at least. Still in the process of finishing a cartoon based on my webcomic. Put together a rough cut using finished animation and animatic, and it wound up being over 17 minutes long! Whoa! Well, half of it is animated (I started back in March), so I'm gonna see that I finish it. In the meantime, I took the time to do this ditty for a Saturday Morning animation jam. I'm at the point with my 20-minute cartoon where I'm starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel, but it still feels so far. I'm 3/4 done with the animation, with 44 scenes left to do (including a handful being done by animators I know). Still been a good experience. Doing all of this made me learn some approaches to animation that makes me learn to be efficient, which will hopefully save me time when I do new cartoons (although for future cartoons I'm gonna cap the running time to 10 minutes, at least for a while) In the meantime, here's a sketchy layout https://twitter.com/bakertoons/status/1423823152350695428/

https://twitter.com/bakertoons/status/1433302879536812035 Update. Down to 8 scenes now. I have all the "hard" scenes completed (scenes with lots of movements and action), so I'm pretty much left with scenes that's mostly talking head. I started working on this last October (although the animation process didn't begin until March), so being so close to done is an odd feeling.

Feels weird that I'm the only person posting here, but I figure I'd share this https://twitter.com/bakertoons/status/1455916929416368140/ I did a bunch of storyboards, including two "Fuzzy Princess" cartoons and a bunch with other ideas. Hoping to have a productive 2022. Already sent some scripts to my voice actor. My "Katrina" cartoon got a very good reception, so that's been encouraging, hence why I'm making more with the characters!

An Ounce of Gold posted:Keep it going! I only had a chance to watch the opening bit, but what I did see I liked. It reminded me of the Peanuts. It had that laid back chill vibe going on. Also your sound design was really well done. Not just the voices, but the balance on your sound effects and background music was great. When I get some free time, I'l lfinish watching it. It's on my watch later list on youtube so I won't forget. Thanks for the kind words! and especially your comments about the sound mixing. I agonize about sound a lot in my cartoons and spent a LOT of hours trying to find the right balance with voices, sound effects, and music, so I'm very relieved and happy to hear that my efforts paid off! As for storyboards, I find doing it on paper easy to focus. I prefer doing them in a separate room, away from my tablet, because it keeps me focused better. My storyboards are very scribbly, and it's more satisfying doing it on paper. It's just a personal thing for me, I guess. I have no problem scanning it in because I have a feed scanner. I do all animation digitally with my tablet, although it's still traditional frame-by-frame. Two other people helped out on the animation front, and one of them did his scene on paper, which I scanned and cleaned up. Curious if anyone can tell which scene was done on paper.
