I'd be surprised if this was the first time she's been posted in this thread but I've been devouring everything Laura Pannack has done. There's also some interesting interviews / lectures on YouTube where she talks about how she balances personal and commercial work financially and time wise.

I've always loved this image but didn't know where it came from, or whether it was even real:

I looked it up yesterday, and it's by a guy named Corey Arnold, who did a series on Bering Sea fishermen. It's worth checking out: http://www.coreyfishes.com/koken/albums/fish-work-bering-sea/.

In 1945, my grandfather and his brother escaped from a war prison in Kaluga, Russia, and crossed over 2,200km on their way to Poland, where they were reunited with their family.

As fugitives - the walked only at night, and avoided contact with people at all cost. Surviving on berries, mushroom and occasionally stolen potatoes or a cabbage, they endured extreme hardship and weather adversity.

Yet throughout the journey, their determnation and their brotherly bond kept them alive and kept them going.

In the summer of 2013, I retraced their epic journey and documented it from the perspective of a fugitive - staying Clear Of People. The journey took me from Kaluga, Russia, across Belarus, Lithuania, to Wroclaw, Poland, where my grandfather had found home and lived to be 92. His younger brother is still alive, and lives in Szczecin, Poland.

It really blows my mind to see proper color images of an era I've only seen in black and white. It makes it feel way more modern than it is.

I wonder what folks 100 years from now will think of the photos we're taking today.

http://daisyzine.com/2015/07/15/luma-grothe-by-ben-morris-for-elle-russia-august-2015/ this is one of my fave editorials this year. Mostly for the location stuff. I always prefer location work rather than pure studio for fashion. I think it really shows that Ben Morris can absolutely deliver in almost every facet of shooting.

Fashion can be really fun because it's interesting to see how different creatives work with each other.

It can be good to follow a model's career a bit as you get an interesting overview of how different creatives shoot them. I always like to use Kate Upton as a good example of this as she's had some absolutely dire work through Sports Illustrated and some of her bigger campaigns, but if you look up some of her Vogue editorials (in particular Vogue Spain shot by Miguel Reveriego) there's some phenomenal work.

Fashion can also be tricky because photographers are sharing creative control with stylists etc. and a bad element can reflect badly on the whole shoot. I discovered James Macari because I found an absolutely horrendous picture and I googled who took it and his site blew me away in a great way. When you see a bad shoot it's a good thought experiment to figure out why.

David Bellemere is someone I forgot to list who is incredible. Alexi Lubomirski is good too but you can very obviously tell he used to assist Testino and for me I find his work a bit too generic.

Is there anywhere I can find a history of fashion photography? And some thought pieces on it's evolution and where it is now?

I'm going to have to do something in that area eventually and I have no idea about it, what inspires it or the looks it uses.

Not a fashion photographer per se, but Jacques Henri Lartigue is a cool place to start if you like oldendays photos.

I'm not super conversant about the academic discussion of fashion photography I just have my own opinions about it as a fashion photographer.

A good place to start would be to look at Harper's Bazaar and Vogue which I think are the first fashion magazine. Guy Bourdin and Helmet Newton are some of the definitive early fashion photographers.

I think most fashion photographers get into it to purely take pretty pictures and put up with a lot of bullshit to do so. It's a very peculiar industry.

I'm in Chipas, Mexico which is home to the Zapatistas movement. I was in a cafe and found these photos, I asked about the photographer and he/she was unknown. I spent the rest of the day exploring town and all the shops I went into, I couldn't find another copy of these photos, might be the only ones. Apologies for the terrible quality. If I manage to track down the photographer, I'll post better photos.

I found someone randomly on flickr who's work I sort of like. I don't know anything about this person, their motivation or methodology, or what kind of artistic statement they're trying to make (if any). It's from flickr. And it's vacant and probably amateurish. Tell me what you think about it, if you'd like.

Everything is very nostalgic and people are almost completely absent, only appearing occasionally as small features among the landscapes. I don't think I would want to know what any of the titles are, or translations of any of the comments. To me that would only reduce their effect.

But just because I like these, doesn't mean they're good.

Edit: Even now that I post them, I'm noticing more of their technical problems. Do those issues detract too much?

I like the first one quite a bit, but the others don't do too much for me. I want to like the third one as well but the harsh reflected light off of the water is really distracting, as is all the stuff in the field. I'm also noticing the wall section in the bottom left now. With better lighting and framing it could be a cool shot, it looks like an interesting place. I see what you mean about the absence of people. The structures don't look particularly dilapidated, it almost seems like there should be people there somewhere in these pictures. I think that's more interesting than just taking pictures of old abandoned buildings at least.
