Welcome to the Nokia thread Nokia phones comes in many flavors: S30: dumbphones for people who just got fire S40: dumbphones for people who just got toilets Symbian: "smart"phones for necrophiliacs Maemo/Meego: linux phones for weirdos Windows Phone: These aren't out yet, go look over here Crucial Links https://symbian.nokia.com https://swipe.nokia.com https://qt.nokia.com http://www.developer.nokia.com/ Blogs http://www.allaboutsymbian.com http://www.nokiaconnects.com http://conversations.nokia.com/home/ TL:DR Intro to Symbian I totally didn't write If you have a Nokia smartphone, then the chances are that it will be running a form of Symbian as its operating system. It’s the software that keeps everything going and includes many of the applications that come installed out of the box. But there’s a lot more to Nokia’s operating system of choice than meets the eye – join us after the break to find out more. A long history The roots of what was to become the Symbian Operating System (OS) go back over 20 years. British company Psion started developing the predecessor to Symbian, the EPOC OS, for its well-loved digital organiser devices in 1987. EPOC was so-named because it signalled the start of a new epoch; but the rumour spread that it also stood for ‘Electronic Piece of Cheese’ One OS to rule them all In 1998, smartphone manufacturers allied to develop and re-work the software for use in phones, with the first Symbian device released in 2000. The Nokia 9210 Communicator, the first ‘open’ Symbian phone, allowing owners to install their own applications, was released in 2001. Phone Juggler Symbian is especially notable for being the first smartphone OS to feature pre-emptive multitasking. It’s obvious what the ‘multitasking’ bit means, but ‘pre-emptive’ means that the operating system can interrupt applications and give resources to another without shutting them down altogether. In practice, it means you can load up your calendar, for example, and then have it running in the background on very low resources until an alarm is due or you bring it back to the front. Top Ticket It may have started as an electronic piece of cheese, but Symbian has become a very big cheese indeed over the last ten years. Nearly 81 million Symbian smartphones – from many different manufacturers – were sold in 2009, according to industry analyst Gartner, giving it 46.9 per cent of the market. And very new After nine ‘full’ releases and many more interim releases for specific devices, Symbian Software Ltd. was acquired by Nokia in 2008. It relaunched Symbian – under the care of a foundation – as a software platform that anyone was free to use later that year, with the code becoming fully open-source only a few months ago, in February 2010. Open Source Symbian is an open-source operating system and software platform. That means anyone can download it from the site and use it free-of-charge – it’s at https://developer.symbian.org. Of course, though, there’s a bit more to creating your own new smartphone than downloading the platform. The move to open source means it will be used for more devices and is intended to spark faster, greater innovation from both phone manufacturers and developers. Founder’s Footsteps Symbian is administered by the Symbian Foundation. This independent, non-profit organisation looks after the code, co-ordinates development efforts and communicates its advantages to people. However, they aren’t the main software engineers. Like other open source software, Symbian is actually written by an army of developers, sometimes working for phone manufacturers or software and service vendors, sometimes completely independently. Symbian^3 is pronounced ‘Symbian-Carat-Three’ and is (unsurprisingly) the third full platform release from the Symbian Foundation. It brings a faster user interface, improved graphics support for advanced layering and effects, HDMI support for high-quality television playback and better data networking. The forthcoming Nokia N8 will be the first phone to feature Symbian^3 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rdGyZYrix9g Symbian^4 is currently at an early stage, though the speedy pace of development means that the foundation expects the first devices in early 2011. The focus of development is on a new user interface – the Direct UI. For developers, Qt – already built into Symbian^3 – will become the standard environment in which applications are written. Qt is an application framework which makes it easier for developers to adapt their code to lots of different devices. The Door’s Open The Symbian Foundation welcomes ideas for the platform – new devices, features and applications – and not just from people with heavyweight programming or electronic engineering skills. The Symbian Ideas website allows you to submit new proposals or comment and vote on other people’s. [/TL:DR] And the the Symbian Foundation died and Nokia absorbed its corpse. That corpse was then outsourced. Why dont these phones have capacitive screens? A. Nokia made one, so did Samsung. Asian markets prefer resistive screens for handwriting recognition, so there are more phones with resistive screens. Q. Why are they so expensive? I'm a cheap rear end and can't afford it. A. Buy an iPhone on contract for $200, sell it on craigslist for $600. Now you have money to buy nice things Q. But I still can't afford to pay such a large price for a phone. A. Actually you can. AT&T data plans for smartphones like the Blackberry, Windows Mobile and iPhone cost a mandatory $30 per month. Unlocked S60 phones can use the optional $15 Media Net plan. You save $360 over the course of two years (a typical contract) or $720 if you just use wifi Q. Can I use an S60 phone on Sprint or Verizon? A. No. Those are CDMA carriers. S60 phones are GSM. Q. Do old S60v3 apps work? A. S60v5 has a compatibility mode, so some apps work. Others don't. Its pretty much trial and error right now

I have to say, one place Symbian excels is the Cameras - software and hardware. I've yet to find one I like as much as my N95's camera. drat it, why can't I get a Nokia phone that'll run Android?

Dr Tran posted:I'm really surprised Sony Ericsson dropped the ball in that regard. Well, we don't really know, the specs on the X10 aren't bad, but until we actually have one in hand and see how much they actually did with it (and how much they improved the camera app), we won't know if it's really worth it. Really though, cameras in phones hit a high point and seem to be dropping off.

I'm pretty drat impressed with the N86's camera after some low-light party atmosphere shooting this weekend. The quality isn't going to win any pulitzers, and the LED flash isn't great at freezing action shots (or beerpong shots, as the case may be) but it's miles ahead of any other cellphone camera I've used in terms of crispness and visibility in less-than-ideal lighting conditions. I do wish they'd gone with a better camera button, though. The mid-press focus "clicks" nicely, but the full press is very stiff and requires you to brace the camera pretty firmly, which has led to more than a few blurred shots that I had to re-take. edit: Also, Furtiv make the phone's "share online" functionality actually worth a drat. I wish Nokia was smart enough to integrate Facebook and Twitter uploading into their software from the outset, but at least there's a third party solution which gets the same results. more of a general s60 question: Is it possible to set a certain app as the "default" app for an S60 function? For example, if I receive a text message or email with a URL and select "Open URL", is there a way to make the phone open it in Opera Mini instead of Nokia's built-in browser?

I'm not sure if its something that the suite is breaking, or if its a contact that is screwy or it just doesn't like that I have photos assigned to contacts. Or just doesn't like me.

Opera Mini beta 2 is out and it's good. They managed to make it so that data entry is done with the phone's T9, but it's integrated into the browser better so it's actually on the page instead of in a popup. T9 can also be used in the URL entry bar now which makes entering addresses a whole lot easier.
