They let roving watches carry guns? The most we had when I was still in was a lovely wooden baton, later replaced with an ASP. Considering we had zero training on either, they would be pretty much useless if we ever had to use them.

P.S. I had a guy try and kill his barracks room mate by driving around with him tied up in the back of his truck. Couldn't convince the command he needed to be removed shoreside until properly evaluated. Had duty the next day as topside rover.

Feel safe.

Plenty of stores with guns. Not sure which one you are referring to. The firing range is still public and awesome, out near Mt. Pleasant, and I had plenty of time to get in some shooting during power school and prototype.

Also, don't pass up on the food just because downtown is expensive. If there is anything a regret not doing more of while I was in Charleston, is was living up the downtown cuisine more. Truly incredible.

Slightly North of Broad is still one of my favorite restaurants, to this day. I contemplate flying back to Charleston, from Hawaii, just for the food, and that one is top of my list.

Oh, and strippers in general....yeah. Just wait until you get to Guam (you'll stop there if you're on a Hawaii boat, or god forbid, get stationed there). If you have no "discipwin", steer clear of strippers. It ends in sadness, self-loathing, and syphilis.

Also, Navy will gently caress you over. But that's a given, really.

Meh, I'm no fan of the Navy, given my rather painful career track, but that's not an accurate way of looking at it. The Navy looks out for the Navy. Once you realize that, and make yourself fit into what they want, it is actually rather simple to get a good deal. I was able to pull a San Diego shore duty as an officer (drat near impossible, especially from Hawaii) just by making sure that they Navy saw it as beneficial to them.

It's all just simple logistics; once you figure that out, it becomes easier to manage (sea duty will always suck; just accept it. If you don't want life to suck, lat-tran or develop an allergy to shellfish)

Also who else has heard of the Law of Conservation of Happiness?

As told to me by my sea dad, my first day onboard (as we leave for a 5 week Eastpac training exercise):

"You see, once we close the hatches, there is a finite amount of happiness onboard. Happiness, like energy, can neither be created nor destroyed aboard this mighty warship, and so in order for real people, like me, to be happy, we have to take it from little shits like you. Understand? Good. Now go inspect the TDU void here. That's an example of happiness transfer, from me to you."

There are fewer more time honored traditions of the submarine force than butt-sex jokes. Honestly, my first thought when I heard they were putting chicks on subs was "Sad, there go the gay jokes.".

Nah, most shitbags come into the Navy as such. Few ever get culled out, sadly.

The real shitbags are destroyed until they ~go sad~, the real superstars are overworked until they absolutely give up on life and quit (or ~go sad~). About the only people who really thrive are us mediocre types.

As far as officers thinking they can do whatever they want, there is still nothing that beats the NY NPTU officer student who used to drive bulldozers for a living. Well, he got drunk, and to prove it to his buddys, stole a dozer and flattened half a dozen yards. I don't think that has anything to do with his being an officer, but more to do with him being awesome.

Totally worth proving. Any life outside NNP is a gem that must be coveted and polished from time to time.

Anyone here been on a PCU/newishh ship? How poo poo will it be, compared to something already active, etc?

I have a buddy JO of mine being red-detailed (read: non-vol), after his 3.5 year sea duty, to a PCU submarine for his "shore duty". First thing my CO asked him once we received his orders? "So, what do you want to do once you get out of the navy lieutenant?"

In all seriousness, it has it's upsides; you're on shore all the time, there are periods of real low activity when you are waiting for things to be turned over from shipyard, but all in all....pray for an operational boat.

Yep; enjoy that time now. It only gets worse before it gets better. I had to cross plant when they went from 5 teams at prototype to 4 teams, so it can be done.

A while back, I came into this forum asking for information about the Navy's nuclear programs (NR Engineer, Instructor, etc.). I'd like to thank all of you for that information - as of yesterday afternoon, I was accepted as an instructor at the Navy's nuclear power school. I report for ODS 2 February and will likely be in the Charleston area by mid- to late March, so if any of you are going to be in the area, please let me know! It would be great to meet new people there who also know the area. I'm nervous because I've never lived anywhere but in my home state and near my family, but I'm excited for the opportunity and challenge.

Good luck bud; don't let the line officers push you around.

Honestly, if there was anything I regret about my time in Charleston, it's that I lived in North Charleston. Find somewhere closer to downtown, because the city has a ton of great things to offer, and while you'll TELL yourself that you'll take the trip down there, I find that school makes it hard unless you are close enough to justify the trip.

Just my two cents.
