Caught up on the last few pages and noticed the user ButtercupSaiyan (who was summarily banned) posting. I thought the username was merely coincidence, but the post that earned him his ban basically confirmed that he's the same one who's done numerous pornographic works of cartoon characters at decent or above quality (just look him up on Google. Note: NSFW). I'm actually quite surprised and amused at his appearance, but not :10bux: worth.

Back to the discussion though,

No, I totally got that vibe too. They danced around it so hard in the last episode that I was expecting them to just come out and say it.

During the first half of the series she was interested in Shaggy and only started getting that connection with Hot Dog Water in the second season. Whether her relationship with Shaggy influenced her relationship with HDW will probably remain forever a mystery, but it could also be one-sided or just a strong friendship.

Also because the first few episodes were between not very good and outright terrible. It wasn't till ghost boy, which is the 9th short in the series that I started to say "oh this show might be okay".

I definitely was turned off watching the first short. Actually, I watched Girl's Night Out and I basically skipped over the part with the boys since they were pretty terrible. There's definitely some redeeming features, but sometimes the humor flounders when it tries to be straight wacky.

I just watched Beware the Batman today and the only thing it has going for it graphic or animation-wise is that it's not as bad as the Pac-Man show. But god drat is it ugly, I felt like I was watching a 22-minute cutscene from an early Playstation 2 game.

It honestly doesn't look that bad to me, but maybe that's due to exposure to the GL:tAS which had a similar CG style.

I don't mind the actual animation so much. It isn't bad enough to push me away or anything, while the story so far at least seems new and interesting. The only thing I didn't like much in the first episode was how I had to wait for characters to get into focus before I knew where the camera was pointing because it was all Generic Corridor Central.

Well it's definitely interesting. I don't know about good or anything yet. I'm a little disappointed they changed Professor Pyg to an animal rights activist-type villain (at least for his first appearance). It is an interesting change to a previously existing character whose gimmick was be a crazy butcher (which obviously doesn't float well on TV), but they could've tried the circus freak gimmick instead.

Hopefully the show will get into its own soon because at this point, it's about as good as The Batman right now.

The newest episode of Beware the Batman was...mediocre

Newest villain of the week is: Anarky. Simplified into, essentially, a whiny teen with a large amount of unwarranted self importance. Probably a little more palatable given that the original was more of an anti-villain and later became something akin to Batgod. Still pretty poor. The B-plot with Tatsu/Katanna is moving at an okay pace. We got a glimpse or her sword, so that's something. I would've preferred an introduction to Robin or Batgirl rather than Katanna as Batman's partner, but I'm just a tad afraid of what they might change in that instance.

Another thing irking me about this series slightly: the lack of alternative outfits on the characters. Tatsu is still in the same jumpsuit. Bruce is in the same shirt and jacket.

I understand where you're coming from, but that's just a symptom of cartoons in general. Watch old BTAS episodes and Bruce has like, 2 outfits besides the mustard suit, tops. It's just a way to help kids identify characters easier.

VVV: But Morrison's Pyg was hosed up, man. Something had to give.

We haven't even reached one change yet, so we'll see where that goes. One thing I can appreciate about this series is that they're using new characters that haven't really shown up in animated form before. Pyg is quite new and is a weaker, more kid friendly but much crazier Poison Ivy in a strange sense. Anarky is from the early 90s and kept on showing up throughout that decade. Given the character's history, making him this utterly incompetent is...amusing in a sort of twisted way. Finally Magpie is a C-list villain so there's pretty much everywhere to go other than already trodden ground with her.

Given that they're using new villains, I'd probably expect someone like Hush to show up near the end of the season or something.

Are there previews for the next episode for this series or is it pretty much a surprise at what happens next at this point.

After reading people talking about it in this thread, I've been watching Mystery Inc on Netflix and it's pretty awesome. I like that there's an over-arching mystery and that it sort of both stays true to and simultaneously subtly sends up all that is Scooby Doo. Plus adding a little more depth to the characters in the meantime. From what I remember reading here, it sounds like it got canned which is too bad.

Also this might just make sense to anybody who lives in the state of New York, but Mr. E sounds like the guys who does the New York lotto commercials on the radio lately.

It got two seasons and tied them up quite nicely. It's a shame there wasn't more, but good shows tend to suffer like that what with scheduling and all impacting when new episodes showed up.

Kids Next Door was okay, but the thing I never liked about the later seasons was how all the worldbuilding of the whole KND organizations was just made up on the fly, and it was pretty clear that the writers were all making it up on the spur of the moment as opposed to planning anything out.

There was some good writing, but I think most of the writers cared more about references and parodies than about the actual show they were working on. I haven't rewatched the show, but as I remember, something like 90% of the show was composed of parodies of movies, shows, and genres.

One episode stands out when talking about all of this. I don't remember the title of it, but essentially is was 1 basically doing a parody of "The Second Renaissance" from The Matrix which also had a cameo of a kid in an Ash outfit from Pokemon. The ideas in that story, while mostly thrown out, had a few retained if I recall correctly and brought up later.

Also, loaded with references and made up on the fly, that's how one would describe a typical tabletop RPG campaign.

It stayed consistent in quality throughout its run, but that last season dragged out over the course of three years and two tie-ins with recent Disney acquisitions, so it clearly ran its course. Plus, Povenmire and Marsh are doing something else anyway, and they've probably wanted to start a new thing for a while. Eight years is a long time to work on any show. Most showrunners get bored doing the same thing all the time- Stephen Colbert got tired of doing his pundit character, and even Seth MacFarlene is getting kinda sick of Family Guy. The Simpsons is the exception to the rule, of course.

The last season being dragged out for specials is pretty typical as it's preparation for reruns and maximizing the overall show length without an increase in production cost. I think Fairly Odd Parents was like that, but apparently there's still new seasons which boggles the mind.

My favorite part of Mystery Inc (aside from the insane mythology) was that they turned Fred and Daphne into characters I could actually care about. Fred ended up being one of the funniest drat characters I've seen in a cartoon in a while.

Also the Flim Flam/Scrappy Doo reference. I was kind of hoping they were going to drop Ghoul School/Boo Brothers/Reluctant Werewolf references too.

Velma: "Why are you so out of shape? Didn't you work as a coach at a boarding school over the summer?"
Shaggy: "I'm gonna level with ya. I was hallucinating most of the time."

I would've gone with Shaggy exaggerating the events to a ludicrous degree

But same in expanding the characters to levels that make them far more interesting than their base archetypes. Velma being the least well off of the group was sorta surprising as much as Shaggy being rather well off.

Did anyone ever watch the canadian show "Strange Days at Blake Holsey High"? I watched it online a few years ago and enjoyed it despite where things just get silly, because it has a decent sense of worldbuilding and some fun twists. The Janitor was a fun character with moments of personality beyond generic mysteriousness and I liked where all the seeds came to fruition, like the Palladium floor in the science room and the Frictionless Chi ball.

Also the episode where Lucas gives himself x-ray eyedrops had an inspired twist. He uses his x-ray vision to break into the shady scientist's office to locate the macguffin, only to bark his shin on a table and realise he didn't see it at all. His xray vision has become so potent he is seeing through everything - he is legally blind. He fumbles his way to the phone and calls his friends for help.

I remember watching that show in the US a while back when Discovery had a Saturday morning block on a network iirc. I recall CN actually making something similar during their bizarre live action period. It only lasted a season but it showed a lot of promise.

Fake edit: it was NBC's Saturday morning block that was a partnership with Discovery.

Actual edit: It was Tower Prep and it was created by Paul Dini.

There is a rhyme and reason. No one outside of programming knows what it is however. Ostensibly, it's when they figure they can maximize ratings and eyeballs. In reality, it looks like it's a bit all over the place. That being said, they seem to tend to premiere new episodes for a few shows at a time so as to maintain a constant level of hype overall. The exception seems to be when they run out of episodes for all of their shows to make any significant burst of premieres or during a "holiday period" where they'll just marathon or prepare specials.

Robot Jones looked like it had a lot of potential and it was a shame it was cancelled so early. At least, that's the sentiment I had back then. It's been a while since I've seen it so I dunno how it's aged, but I feel like Regular Show hits a lot of the same retro humor jokes.

And I think there were some other series in between then and now, maybe in the 90s. I'm not sure how/if all of these series tie in or if they're just remakes using the same character designs and/or stories.

Crowds is basically related to the original Gatchaman in name and stylistic choices only. The plot is essentially disconnected and otherwise original. It's also good.

It doesn't matter if it's read by primarily women (see: Prince of Tennis and other sports series) or stars a largely female cast (best I can think of is Fairy Tail or maybe Slayers), the publication it runs in, which intends to appeal to a certain demographic, determines if it's a Shonen or Seinin or whatever.
