So I just picked up BSE's new album From The Shadows and I'm absolutely loving it. I had mixed feelings about their last album (Lights And Wires): it had some good tracks like Inpeak and Extraction but overall the album came across as being sort of experimental.

With From The Shadows BSE have gone back to their roots and stylistically the album is much like Cruel & Unusual and Endangered Species. At the moment my favourite track has to be All Is Lost (BSE Feat. Thomas Oliver & Youthstar). The drop on that track is insane.

My only past experience with Foreign Beggars is hearing them on Skrillex tracks, so their parts sound kind of goofy to me :( Everything besides that is amazing, though. BSE hasn't lost a beat. They've still loving got it. Track is huge. I need to grab the full album!

Well at least BSE didn't feature MC Dynamite on any of their tracks. I've only seen him feature on one track, High Contrast Feat. MC Dynamite - High Society, which in my opinion was terrible. Honestly one of his lines is "Fly to the moon / came back with a spoon"...

IN OTHER NEWS the line up for the popular NYE gig in Western Australia, Origin, has been released:

It's a pretty good line up and I'd love to see Chase & Status, Ed Rush, Dillinja, Sigma and Metrik however overall it seems a bit underwhelming compared to the line ups they had in 2011 and 2010. I am digging the change in venue and that it spans two days instead of just NYE. Belvior Ampitheatre where they've held it in previous years isn't exactly an easy place to get to/from so being able to camp out is cool.

Maybe I'm remembering incorrectly, but I remember Spor's older stuff being much dirtier and grimier, which this is not

I mean, I still liked both of those tracks, but if I hadn't been told it was Spor, I wouldn't have known it was him.

You're not wrong about Jon Gooch's earlier releases as Spor being a lot dirtier and grimier. In his pre-Lifted Music days (2004-2006) he had several releases under Renegade Hardware, Barcode and Subtitles which were all a lot darker and, IMO, consistently good (Some examples would be Three Ravens (Barcode), Haywire (Renegade Hardware) and Powder Monkey (Subtitles)).

Following the launch of Lifted Music with Chris Renegade in 2006 I've found Spor's releases have been a bit hit-and-miss. He still released a lot of great tracks in that time (The Supernova EP was excellent) but I've found some of them to bit a toned down and, for lack of a better word, generic.

More recently I think there may have been somewhat of a falling out between Jon and Chris Renegade, based on some off-hand comments Chris made on the last Lifted Music podcast (Episode 19, 28/04). On the other hand I'm probably just mis-interpreting the whole situation...

I can't really think of any artists that fit your description of purely drums and sub bass focused production (I'm someone else can). However if you want some more minimal/downtempo D&B check out Calibre, Krust, Roni Size / Reprazent (Specifically the album "New Forms") and Goldie's earlier works like the album "Timeless".

Anybody heard the new Mistabishi album Skum yet? I just listened to the whole thing and...well, it's definitely different than Drop. Apparently he came out with an album last year called Trip, but this is the first I'm really hearing from him since he got ejected from Hospital.

It's kind of all over the place. Definitely not how he used to sound, from what I recall. Hell, some of it isn't even drum n bass. Some of it almost sounds like slightly less schizophrenic breakcore. The only song on here that really sounds like his old stuff with some new tricks thrown in is Extra Life.

But anyway, the DNB tracks are pretty neat, albeit kind of jarring to hear at first. Here's a 24 minute album sampler for you to check out:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3LoujRmIXss

I enjoyed Drop and Trip although the latter is very experimental and harder to get into. From listening to the mini mix of Skum that you posted it sounds like he is continuing along the experimental vein and it sounds nothing like Drop. Not that that's a bad thing of course.

Edit: I just picked up Enei's latest album, Machines, based on the good reception in this thread and it is brilliant. It feels somewhat like a cross between Syncopix and Evol Intent.

Hell yeah, following in second place...

1. Black Sun Empire Feat. Thomas Oliver & Youthstar - All Is Lost (From The Shadows)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rXkOHVqo93w
Absolutely massive track from BSE's most recent album "From The Shadows". The drop on this one is catastrophic.

2. Zardonic & Messinian - Survive (Vulgar Display Of Bass)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7N6PeMtyNnM
Usually I hate any and all dubstep producers however Zardonic is an exception to the rule as he manages to toe a fine line between the two genres. His most recent album, "Vulgar Display of Bass", is exactly that and is a great listen.

3. Octane & DLR - Cometh The Horde (Method In The Madness)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NTPsnvt3U7g
A very well put together track from an equally well produced album.

4. Logistics Feat. Nightshade & Sarah Callander - Crystal Skies (Fear Not)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BbJRpft4L98
Some may find it a bit corny but I really don't give a drat. It's a beautiful track with lovely lyrics :3:

5. SpectraSoul - Sometimes We Lie... (Delay No More)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ya8wOBZMAfI
Very nice minimal downtempo track. Smooth as all hell.

B-B-B-Bonus Track: Utah Jazz - Conrad Funk (Groove Therapy)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lQUw9WnB2lE
As the name implies, Utah Jazz delivers some very smooth and jazzy beats.

Another Bonus Track: High Contrast - The Road Goes On Forever (The Agony & The Ecstasy)

Very high energy track, love the flourishes in the chorus.

Secondly, last week Neosignal (Phace & Misanthrop's label) posted a 2013 Outlook detailing their plans for this new year.

Of note in the outlook is that Phace & Misanthrop will soon be releasing an album which "will consist of electronic music we do not really know how to call yet" (Thijs De Vlieger from Noisia called the album "neo digital krautrock"). I have to say I'm skeptical about the direction their taking however I'll refrain from passing judgement until I've heard it. From the sounds of it the style will only be remotely similar to D&B.

As for definite D&B work Phace & Misanthrop will be releasing a new EP under Neosignal which will include a collab with Mefjus and Noisia! This is awesome news as Phace has done some amazing collab work with Noisia in the past (Such as the tracks Thrillseekers, Unveil, and, more recently, Program).

Continuing in this vein of discussion does anyone know of any upcoming D&B releases to look forward to?

Here's a copy of the podcast on Soundcloud if you having trouble downloading it from their website (They're using that shar.es bullshit which was broken as hell when I tried to use it): https://soundcloud.com/dubstepdemocracy/neosignal-podcast-volume-006

12.phace & misanthrop - motor (neosignal)
13.gesaffelstein - viol (turbo recordings)
14.grateful dead - althea (neosignal edit / no release)

On the subject of Phace & Misanthrop they were recently signed to Noisia's "Division Recordings" label (Which I think is a sub-label of Vision) under their new moniker, Neosignal. Phace & Misanthrop formed the Neosignal record label back in 2008 however early last year they took on the Neosignal name themselves and began to produce an album which will be released under Division Recordings.

Unfortunately I don't have high hopes for this new album as Phace & Misanthrop decided to celebrate their signing to Division Recordings by releasing the following abortion: Noisia - Stigma (Neosignal Remix). All they've done is taken the original (Which is already an amazing track: http://youtu.be/xtppf3xkby4), slowed it down by 50%, and dropped in a pinch of wub to make it sound more like dubstep. IMO it just comes off as lazy pandering.

Than again I could be looking at this the wrong way so a second opinion would be great.

Billion Dollar Gravy is a fantastic album, part of which I believe is due to the relative simplicity of the tracks (Cum Dancing is a perfect example and my personal favourite from the album).

IMO, the only recent release from London Elektricity which captures this simplicity is their 2008 album Syncopated City. Looking back, the album actually seems sort of odd next to Power Ballads (2005) and Yikes! (2011).

Oh and that Phuturistix remix of Different Drum is awesome (If I'm not mistaken it's from the 10" release NHS63Z).

Edit: unrelated but yesterday I discovered that there is actually a music video for "All Is Lost" by BSE and it is lame as hell: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3t3WX9HA84Q.

Black Sun Empire recently released a remix compilation under Blackout Music NL: Variations On Black. It's around 80% new material with remixes of tracks from Driving Insane right up to From The Shadows. Some notable tracks:

BSE & Concord Dawn - The Sun (Evol Intent Remix) - The dark and dirty style of Evol Intent really bleeds through in this remix.
BSE Feat. Foreign Beggars - Dawn Of A Dark Day (Receptor Remix) - Receptor has basically turned the first four minutes of the track into a giant buildup for an equally enormous drop at 4:00. Style-wise it's an interesting remix as Receptor is known for faster and darker tracks that border into skullstep territory (Very similar to Current Value).
BSE & Eye-D - Brainfreeze (Neonlight Remix V1) - Somewhat of a newcomer to the scene Neonlight have recently started to prove themselves as being capable of producing amazing tracks and this remix is a testament to that.

Oh and the worst track: "Eraser (SPL Remix)" - Basically a dubstep abortion.

I don't think I've ever heard of Neonlight before, but now I want to hear more of their work.

I first heard Neonlight on one of the Lifted Music podcasts where they played the track Computer Music from Neonlight's Byte Bites Bit EP (LFTD012, Lifted Music). That second drop at 1:50 is just awesome.

They also had an awesome remix on BSE's most recent album From The Shadows: BSE - Eraser (Neonlight Remix)
