It appears the B&N sale is for Americans only. I'm in Canada and Criterion blus are showing up on the B&N website at $36 each. Edit -- Oops, it appears some hoser in the Criterion thread jumped the gun and the sale hasn't actually started yet. Well, I hope it's not Americans only! Jeff Wiiver posted:Hoo boy! Now we can watch two awful actors tread water for two hours in ~glorious high definition~ My Criticker review from long ago: A couple floats in the open ocean crying for an hour, then one of them (I forget which one) floats by themselves, crying, for a little while. The End! gently caress Open Water. There's only two movies (out of nearly 3000 I've seen) that I've ranked lower.

And yet something tells me we'll see Blus of both of those before some of my favourite movies are released (basically any Herzog or Tarkovsky). I hope the free Metropolis t-shirt isn't your average circus tent (L or XL) that they use normally for giveaways. Not everyone is an overweight slob, thankyouverymuch!

doctor thodt posted:If you play your cards right you can get a region free player for around $100, possibly less. I'm not saying you should do it just to be able to play Metropolis, but there are so many wonderful region-locked imports that make it a very worthwhile investment. I'm going to need a region-free player at some point, do you have any good reccos? All I know about is Oppo and Momitsu and even then I only know the brand names and not the specifics.

You Are A Elf posted:I hope it's the original version I have on VHS and not the MGM DVD version that shortens a lot of scenes with music and has rerecorded dialogue from some zombies (including Tarman) for some reason. Biggest disappointment ever that makes me pull out my 24 year old videotape if I want to watch it. But the MGM DVD has Zombie subtitles!

I'm not big on either of those as cover art, but I'll buy the poo poo out of Citizen Kane when it comes out.

Criminal Minded posted:I'd imagine I'd feel the same way, if I had any experience there. Any recommendations? The Italian Connection is easily one of the best films of the genre and Di Leo's films truly are the benchmark for the genre (although Rulers of the City is pretty drat goofy). I've seen all four films and will absolutely be buying that boxset asap. I need to find that Deodato film!

According to Screem magazine (issue #27), Shout! Factory got the rights to "many" Herzog films and we could expect to see Blu-Rays of: Aguirre, Nosferatu and Fitzcarraldo sometime this year. It's about time!

Hibernator posted:Edgar Wright's movies all have jam-packed blurays, and are especially nice if you like commentaries. Blade Runner has really in-depth docs about both the film and the restoration for the Final Cut. And if you dig The Frighteners there is a huge making-of doc on it. Any Ridley Scott commentary is great if you want a dry, technical viewpoint. If you want a more fun and party side of things then go for early Peter Jackson or any John Carpenter/Kurt Russell commentary.
