Obscure movies are more likely to get licensed out to small publishers that want to release everything they can while other movies get sat on because certain movie studios don't care about Blu-Ray when it comes to catalog releases. They'll release it to VOD in HD but pressing a disc is a bridge too far.

Speak of the devil, in October Shout is releasing Dawn of the Dead.........the 2005 Zack Snyder version. Still, it's getting a 2 disc set with both versions. Hopefully this eventually leads to getting the original.

That's great news. IMO, the director's cut fucks up the tight pacing that the theatrical cut has so it's great to see both versions get a release.

I'm curious if it's going to be the real theatrical version or the current Universal release where they have CGI bloodspots on the window to cover up the nudity.

And it looks like Shout also licensed Land Of The Dead from Universal.

The problem is that, from what I understand, it's a waste to buy a 4K television if it doesn't have HDR, and lo and behold all of those great deals for <$500 don't have it. I'm not really in a position to spend 700 or 800 on a new t.v. that's only going to be a small upgrade.

Cheapest one I saw that can do HDR is this Roku TV for $600

Here's a weird deal. Amazon has Mad Max High Octane Anthology Collection for $86.17 if you order it through Alexa. Current price is $187.33 so that's a giant drop and $60ish cheaper than it's ever been.

As far as I can tell, it includes UV codes, every Mad Max movie, the Black & Chrome version of Fury Road, a UHD disc of Fury Road, new documentaries and a Interceptor Figurine.

I didn't want to derail the Criterion thread anymore but Vingear Syndrome has some cool news.

September tease...

September ups the ante further with a new restoration and Blu-ray premier of a sleazy exploitation masterpiece that's languished for years on DVD, only ever sourced from well worn prints, plus the Blu-ray premiers of two 'horror' titles from opposite ends of the filmmaking spectrum: 60s weirdness and 80s home grown absurdity.

And, just in case you missed it the first couple times in this email, we have 5 HORROR BLU-RAYS slated for October. Plus three more in November...

I did the same...and is there any truth to this?

As memory serves, the BDA specifically disallows the release of purely SD content – it has to be upscaled or otherwise “enhanced” for high-def viewing. When my dad worked for Disney they ran into issues with this as they’d wanted to put out a Bluray set of one of their old Saturday morning offerings – one disc containing the entire show – but they were shot down, and releasing a multi-disc set wasn’t considered worth the money it’d spend to produce at the time (2009, I believe).
I can’t tell you which show it was, mind, but it was a pretty hectic time over at Disney. Life was like a hurricane.

Vinegar Syndrome announced their October lineup.

quote:

First up, Charles Philip Moore's Evil Dead inspired and Fulci-esque DEMON WIND makes its DVD and Blu-ray debut in an all new and extremely colorful 2k restoration, and filled with extra features, plus for a limited edition VinegarSyndrome.com exclusive, we recreated the original lenticular cover!!!

Fabrice Zaphiratos' almost indescribably insane arthouse slasher, BLOOD BEAT, is making its DVD and Blu-ray debut, fully restored from its original negative!

One of the few hardcore features to also quality as a slasher, Roberta Findlay's A WOMAN'S TORMENT makes its DVD and Blu-ray debut, newly restored from its original negative and features its unseen and extended R rated version!

After a lengthy search, Ted Mikels finally located film elements for his 1971 classic, THE CORPSE GRINDERS, and we're honored to be bringing it to Blu-ray. This special edition includes archival interviews with Ted as well as a new historical commentary with his friend, filmmaker Elijah Drenner.

Finally, a double dose of Roberta Findlay's 80s horror work featuring devil worshiping priests in PRIME EVIL and vengeful ghosts in LURKERS, both of which are making their Blu-ray debuts restored from their original negatives!

October preorders will be available on our site later this week. THREE of the releases will come with limited edition slipcovers, exclusive to VinegarSyndrome.com: DEMON WIND (lenticular slip), BLOOD BEAT and THE CORPSE GRINDERS!

And they're teasing an announcement for "the biggest release we've ever done" on Friday, with a special edition release slated for Black Friday.

Here's the big Vinegar Syndrome announcement.

quote:

We are incredibly excited to announce that we’ve acquired the rights to Slava Tsukerman’s new wave, sci-fi masterpiece, LIQUID SKY, and it will be making its worldwide Blu-ray debut during our Black Friday sale (November 24th), EXCLUSIVELY on VinegarSyndrome.com in a special limited edition package!

The release will feature an all new, director and cinematographer approved, 4k restoration from the original camera negative, along side loads of extra features, among them interviews with director Tsukerman, star Anne Carlisle, cinematographer Yuri Neyman, production designer Marina Levikova, among others. Plus never before seen outtakes and production stills, and more!

Although the limited edition will formally go on sale during our annual Black Friday weekend mega-sale, and as such won’t have a normal pre-order period, we will be offering a ‘flash pre-order’ during one 24-hour period in September (exact date TBD), during which you’ll be able to not only to order LIQUID SKY, but also reserve copies of our other two surprise Black Friday releases and, while we’re not gonna divulge the titles, we can say that they’re both uniquely perverse horror gems that have been requested from us many-many times. For this special ‘flash pre-order,’ we will require payment upfront due to the limited nature of the releases.

More info on LIQUID SKY and the flash pre-order will follow in the next week or so.

Not exactly Blu-Ray but there's news that Apple is fighting Hollywood on the price of 4K digital purchases. They want to cap it at $19.99 a movie. Hollywood wants them at $24.99-34.99

I'm guessing that will be the difference between UltraHD or digital taking off. If Hollywood gets its way, digital is basically dead in the water. Even $20 a movie is going to be a tough sell with most UltraHD+Blu+Digital bundles being around $15-28 each.
