In the grim darkness of the future there is only Oakley.

I think I should add my experience with the Stranger mission from God/Satan/Death/whoever gives a gently caress.

Anyway the whole time he's got this :smug: as gently caress demeanor like he knows everything about you and is generally kind of an all-knowing rear end that seems to feel like he's in control of everything.

As I'm sure you guys know there's shitloads of wildlife in this game, perhaps too much in places as hunting bears usually gets you raped by more bears after you're skinning the initial 4 bears you killed.

But anyhow, after the second part of the mission this God/Satan/Death stranger smugly tells me to help out, or not help out a nun, after the cutscene breaks his icey-cool temperance is shattered by a pack of wolves.

Seeing such a confident and ice-cold pompus rear end go "OH JESUS gently caress" and full sprint in terror from native wildlife was glorious.

Come to think of wolves have ruined (but not really ruined) two stranger missions for me. The other was the guy with the flying machine. On the second leg of the mission he's standing right by a cliff. As I was running up to him with all the supplies I collected he was attacked by wolves and fell to his death off the cliff. Which ultimately made no difference in the story but I still had to come back later after he respawned.

So, here are my final thoughts on the game: This is my favorite video game of the year. This is my favorite video game ever.

I wouldn't say it's the best video game, or even the best Rockstar game. All that will do is create a high standard that others will pick apart leading to it being labeled us over-hyped.

What I will say that I truly connected with Marston and got goosebumps during the final battle. I had fun the entire time. It's one of the few games that only rarely felt like a grind to 100%, but was always thrilling when you finally beat the grind (Beating everyone at poker in Blackwater, disarming however many men, stabbing two cougars to death).

The characters were well painted, there were none I disliked besides the ones I was meant to. I felt a bit disconnected from the Mexico chapter, but still felt sad during the last mission. The main story arc was a thrill and the West Elizabeth chapter with Dutch's return was awesome. The themes felt well stated while not being overly hammered into the audience.

What Rockstar North truly needs to look towards is how this game weaves the missions so well into the story. There is always either a goal or motivation that goes along with a mission. GTAIV's missions often had Niko helping people he openly hates for no good reason. The Dickens and Mexico missions teeter on that, but they always come with a clear goal that gives it a logic and keeps the player interested because you know you're working towards something.

It's funny how this game unintentionally became the best hunting simulator ever created and that just ties into how much life is in the missions. I've played this game for thirty hours and just witnessed a new random encounter for the first time and I'm aware of at least a couple of others that I've never witnessed. The bounties, poker, blackjack, liar's dice, nightwatches, they never stop being fun for me. I've gone whole in-game weeks without ever touching the story missions because of how fun it all is. The truth is that something like poker is such a simple game mechanic, but it adds so much life.

The game does have its problems. It's glitchy as gently caress. A lot of the missions could have been much more epic in the number of threats and obstacles. I wouldn't have minded a few more unenterable buildings to pad out some of the towns, especially Blackwater.

Still, loving love this game.
This is the only Rockstar game I've not been disappointed with. I played through GTA 3, VC and GTA IV and just ran out of steam after a while due to the gameplay bugs frustrating the poo poo out of me and the long and tedious story.

This one has it's share of bugs but the core gameplay works far better than any of the GTA games before it. The storyline gets a bit poor in areas and is never something new but it's different enough from the standard gaming cliches to make it enjoyable.

It is probably the poorest written part of the game because no real reason is given. There's tons to speculate on but if Ross really did want John dead he would have simply killed him and his family after Dutch was dead. Going after him later after allowing John to live his life makes no sense and deserves an explanation.

For the disarming 6 guys challenge, I used a different method - equip the Evans Repeater, go to the gang hideout with the mine (Gaptooth Breach I think?), run directly past the guys outside the mine, then when you get inside use deadeye on the first 2 guys to hopefully disarm them. Once you've done this, proceed slowly through the mine, manually aiming at their guns; because you can't really get surrounded, you have time to line up shots pretty well, and with the Evans you have quite a bit of leeway for missed shots.

Hope this helps someone!
I, also, had a loving hell of a time with it until I just went into Gaptooth Breach with the Evans repeater. Finished the 6 shot challenge around halfway through the Challenge and didn't even use Dead Eye for fear the Dead Eye-auto reload would gently caress it up (which it doesn't apparently).

Every "bid" of dice means you're saying "there are greater than or equal the amount of dice I bid". You cannot bid less than the person before you so eventually someone has to make an outlandish claim.

So someone starts off by saying "I bid 1 6 dice." That means he's saying out of all the dice on the table there is at least 1 dice that rolled a 6. The next person has to "up" the bid so he can bid that there are at least 2 1's, 2's, 3's, etc. or he can bid that at least 3 of whatever were rolled.

Me too, I've been watching a ton lately. It's Bandolero now, with Jimmy Stewart, James Dean and Raquel Welch.

What does wear me a bit thin about the game is the repetitiveness in the plot.

"You left me to die after I'd been shot!"
"You shot me then left me to die!"
"You shot me! and then you left me to die!"
etc.

"OK after THIS mission you better tell me where he is!"
"You're gonna tell me where to find him after this mission!"
"I'm not falling for your poo poo again, THIS time you better tell me where he is!"
and so on.

I feel like it would almost be an even better game if they axed the plot completely and added more random event encounters instead.
Can you really complain about this if you liked GTA IV?

Either way I can't deny that some of the story dialog elements get really repetitive. Marston keeps asking Ross "if he has a choice" and Ross replies "no" in a very menacing fashion. This happens numerous times and it just reaks of poor dialog due to repetition. The "you left me to die" between Marston and Dutch does occur repeatedly but not as bad as Ross and Marston.

However, it really manages to capture the early FBI days. They were tremendously undisciplined group, some were good and some were very bad but the general goal was to make Hoover look good, by any means necessary. This continued for decades with legally-gray (aka. illegal) wiretapping among other things.

Really RDR has a superb general story barring one tremendous flaw:
SERIOUS SPOILERS HERE there is no reason for Ross to let Marston and his family go only to come back later and try and murder them. He should have just killed them all, outright, when Dutch was killed. You're never given a reason other than Dutch saying "they'll find a new monster" so you basically have to make up, on your own, why they decided to come back which is just lovely storytelling.

But repetition and that general story aside RDR has superb atmosphere, plenty of nods to excellent western films, much improved gun combat and is just a God drat riot.

Basically he had to go back to headquarters to get a signature on a piece of paper that said he could go kill Marsten. He was covering his rear end.
As I said, you basically have to make up your own reason.

This doesn't make logical sense because, again, Ross had plenty of time to get permission to do Dutch then Marston one after another.

The fact remains that it makes sense to kill Marston right after he kills Dutch then kill his family. Ross had plenty of time to speak with/get permission from Johns about the entire thing.

Rakthar posted:

The problem is the scriptwriters watched far too much deadwood and read too much Game of Thrones. The new hotness is treating your characters like garbage to 'shock' the audience into how hardcore you are. The fact that people will rationalize the unsatisfying wrapup is just an attempt to think that the unsatisfying must somehow be deep.

The story didn't have to be written as it was, the scriptwriters had every freedom to do whatever they wanted to do with it. But at the same time, the tone of the game changes significantly through the three acts. They say it's because the first is an homage to classic westerns, the second to spaghetti westerns, and the third to 'modern' westerns. I think the changes in tone are pretty jarring and it feels more like 3 distinct short games, than one cohesive game. And the ending is yet ANOTHER change in tone that doesn't make sense and somehow doesn't fit with the story they chose to write.

Honestly, my liking for RDR went from 95% in the first act, to about 80% in the second act, to about 50% in the third act. Which mirrors my dislike for modern westerns and the pointless cruelty. It's like the whole point is "gently caress you for caring about ANYTHING or wanting a neat wrap up, this is real life, hard core mothafucka" and that just gets old.

Anyway, I still would have been fine with a gently caress you ending, as it wasn't unexpected, but the way it was done was yet another gently caress you attempt to rub your nose in the idea that there are no happy endings. At least that's what it felt like to me, and that's why I didn't like it.
I concur for the most part. Like I said I was fine with the ending, Marston getting killed wasn't unexpected. It was distinctly foreshadowed and not too much in my opinion. That was well done and I think they deserve credit for it. Additionally it allowed from an ambiguous ending: was Jack going down the same road as his father or was he adhering to a moral code when the justice system itself was at fault which we normally cheer for?

However the distinct flaws for me were repetitious dialog (the "DO I HAVE A CHOICE"/"MY FAMILY" poo poo gets pretty tedious, by the 10th time it just felt like amateur hour) and Ross coming back for Marston was handled. The stupid thing is the former could have been solved by just dropping the repetitive lines. The latter could been fixed by 10-15 seconds of additional dialog using any of the assumptions made on the story's behalf in this thread. Everything people have posted have been reasonable and would work.

Two easy fixes and you could have an otherwise flawless game. Well except for the Euphora engine making it frustrating as hell to perform precision movements (like getting through a door when you just missed it).

fennesz posted:

Whoa there bro, I don't think the writers were out to get you personally or anything.

I didn't get the sense at all that the writers were going for "no happy endings HAHAHA" they were trying to show the cycle of violence and revenge. Where a violent upbringing begins and why it happens. I know a lot of people weren't a fan of Jack, but the game could have easily started with you playing as Jack. The farm could have been the tutorial level and the game progresses as you track down those responsible for murdering your father and tearing apart your fragile family.

That's what I got the sense of anyway, showing how lust for vengeance is started and carried out. I know this is going to sound like I'm trying to be a condescending rear end in a top hat but I kind of feel bad that you disliked the story so much. It's pretty obvious it could have been pulled off in half the amount of missions (even excluding the tutorial levels) but it's still a game and it still has to be fun.
He does have a point about screenwriting as of late. I've tried to follow a number of TV shows and when something goes well I'm already going "oh things are going well, I wonder what will happen to completely reverse their fate so that everything goes horribly." And then it does.
