What is Red Dead Redemption?

Red Dead Redemption is Rockstar's newest sandbox style action-adventure game with a "Wild West" setting. Developed by Rockstar San Diego, which is known for such breakout hits as the Midnight Club series and Table Tennis, Red Dead Redemption is the spiritual successor to Red Dead Revolver.

The year is 1911, the place is a quasi-fictional area of America known as "New Austin", and the player assumes the role of one John Marston, retired outlaw and would-be rancher. John Marston is dragged out of retirement by an organization simply called "The Agency", a government group tasked with enforcing its governmental agenda on an untamed landscape. The Agency has kidnapped John Marston's wife and son and are forcing him to hunt down and capture or kill the remaining members of his band of outlaws. Simple story, nothing new or groundbreaking, as it should be. This is a game set in the American Old West and is made in the style of old western films. Anything more wouldn't be true to the genre it's a part of.

Why you should play it:

Wild West. Sandbox. If those two terms aren't enough to subscribe you to Red Dead Redemption, I don't know what else will. If you've played GTA IV, you are familiar with open-world games like Red Dead Redemption. In RDR, you roam the landscape armed with your six-shooter, mounted atop your trusty steed, generally doing whatever you like. However, unlike GTA IV, your actions in RDR are noticed. Whether you be the heroic or the villainous type, the populace will react to your decisions and be affected by them. They can revere you for your good deeds or despise and fear you for your bad ones. Your decisions will have an impact all across the land, and make no mistake about it, there is a lot of land for your story to traverse. The world is absolutely massive, and yet Rockstar has paid every attention to detail. Miles of barren, deserted wilderness, spotted by the occasional blemish of a small town or ranch struggling to survive in the most barren of landscapes will quickly turn into murky, dark swamps and rich, thriving coastal cities. One could make a game out of exploring all of the available terrain, and there is even more to do. There are upwards of 50+ main storyline missions, nearly 20 side-quest missions, countless random world events ranging from wanted posters where the player must hunt down and capture or kill a bounty target to the player encountering a group of NPC's about to perform an execution. Even with all of this, what the player can do in Red Dead Redemption is barely being covered.

I'm still not convinced/I'm afraid of discovering new things, what else can I do:

Jesus, what more do you want? A list? Fine, here is a list of what you can do in Red Dead Redemption:
The main story (50+ missions, 20+ hours of gameplay)
The side stories (called "stranger missions", of which there are about 20, some of which have multiple missions as part of their story arc)
Gang hideouts (think small dungeons)
Bounty missions (hunt down and capture or kill the bounty target, then return said target to the local sheriff)
Hunting/Scavenging (from rabbits to elk to grizzly bears and cougars)
Track down and discover ancient buried treasure
Lay claim to being the fastest, deadliest gunslinger in the west through duels
Jobs such as working the nightwatch, which involves preventing break-ins or stopping bar brawls, breaking in and taming wild horses
Herd cattle
Defend the populace or terrorize it (stop a robbery or aid the thief,)
Mini-games including Texas Hold Em' Style Poker, Blackjack, Arm Wrestling, Horseshoes, Five Finger Fillet
Watch in-game movies
and more!

I'm a unique snowflake and I like to express that in the games I play:

The player can unlock outfits that grant bonuses including allowing the player to blend in with a specific gang of outlaws to making certain governmental agencies look favorably on the player. Unlocking the outfits require completing a list of tasks and finding scraps of clothing. The player can even purchase a bandana (purchasable in Thieves Landing) that he can wear over his face. Doing so will provide anonymity to the player and prevent the players honor from increasing or decreasing from his actions. There are 13 different properties the player can rent or buy and different horses the player can find in the wilderness, lasso, tame and then make their own.
Outfits
Horses
Houses

What about weapons?

The player can wield revolvers, pistols, repeaters, rifles, sniper rifles, shotguns, and use thrown weapons, a knife, a lasso, and even the players own fists as weapons. There are many different types of weapons for each category, so the player has a bit of customization in that arena as well.
Weapons

Items?

RDR introduces items the player can hold in his inventory and use as needed. The items include medicine to restore health, chewing tobacco, snake oil and moonshine to restore deadeye, horse pills and apples to restore your horses stamina. There are also items that can be purchased or earned that provide passive bonuses.
Items

You know what, that's still not enough, is there anything else that would make me want to play this game?

Ok, fine, you want more? How about multiplayer? Red Dead Redemption has multiplayer that includes Shootout and Capture the Bag (think deathmatch and capture the flag) that can be played in either team or FFA format. Each match begins with a duel between sides. The victor of the duel gets a slight head start. Even more than that, multiplayer begins in whats called Free Roam, which is basically a trimmed down version of the single player world. The world is the exact same size and looks virtually the exact same, but things such as the story missions, stranger missions, jobs, mini-games and random world events have been cut. There are still gang hideouts you can do, and 50 levels of experience to be gained. Gaining levels will unlock weapons, mounts, characters and titles.

Playstation 3 vs. XBOX 360
There isn't much of a difference. The PS3 version has one additional outfit and an additional hideout. The Hideout is Solomon's Folly and while it is hands-down the best way to gain experience in multiplayer, it's hardly worth buying one version or the other. Buy this game for whatever system you'd rather play it on.

How do I tell what horse I have?
Update: With a new and improved "I don't understand horses" section

The horse deeds that are purchasable in stores will describe the horse pretty accurately. There are 5 horses that are worth a special mention:
The Kentucky Saddler is a 3-star solid tan/caramel colored horse (tame and purchase, reward for doing a mission for Bonnie)
The Hungarian Half-breed is a 3-star solid white/grey colored horse (tame and purchase)
The American Standard-bred is a 3-star solid dark brown colored horse (tame and purchase)
The War Horse is a 3-star pure black colored horse (Best Buy pre-order bonus / UK collectors edition)
The Dread Steed is a 2-star, black colored horse with a white face and scars all over it's body (obtained by having full negative honor)

You unlock horses by wandering into the wilderness, finding a horse, lassoing said horse and breaking further said horse by mounting and riding the horse into submission. To "break" a horse you must mount it and defeat it in a mini-game that simply involves you staying centered on the horse. The horse will try to buck you off and you must not get bucked off. You do this by staying centered. If the horse makes your character sway to the left, you move your character to the right. If the horse makes your character sway to the right, you move your character to the left. That's all it takes. After you break a horse you can purchase a deed for the horse in any general store. From then on, when you use the deed (the deed is not a single-use item. It does not get destroyed after using it and you can use it as much as you want) your default horse will become the horse the deed is for. (example: If you purchase the Kentucky Saddler deed from a general store and then "use" the deed, from then on, whenever you whistle for a horse, a Kentucky Saddler will respond to your whistle.) If your horse dies, another horse, that is exactly the same, will respond to your whistle. If you somehow make another horse your default horse (through the method described below) you can re-use the deed to make the horse described in the deed your nrew default horse.

You can make any horse your default horse by bringing it to a hitching post and hitching it. Hitching posts can be found in basically all settlements and hitching the horse is done by responding to a button prompt (on the PS3 this is the square button). You may also make another horse your default horse by using a new deed. The old deed, along with any other deeds you may have purchased, will remain in your inventory indefinitely.

I'm trying to get 100% completion, what do I still need to do?
How the gently caress am I suppose to know? Check this guide and compare it to what you have done already: http://www.reddead.net/forums/thread-red-dead-100-guide-to-redemption-stranger-missions-outfits-and-much-much-more
The Rockstar Social Club also has a 100% completion section under your user profile that will tell you what you still need to do. It does not necessarily update in real time so you may need to wait awhile for it to update appropriately: http://socialclub.rockstargames.com/

I just got into Mexico and this awesome song was playing and I got off my horse and it stopped playing and and and
The song is "Far Away" by José González, you can download the soundtrack on itunes and amazon.com

I have full positive honor and I still haven't gotten my Obscuridad del Santo Andres, where do I get it?
You get it through a random world event where a nun approaches you and gives it to you. You can't trigger it and you can't go to a certain spot to obtain it, it just happens. You can try exiting the game and reloading but that probably won't help things. You just have to wait for it to happen.

On that note, how do I get my dread steed for having negative honor?
You get a 2-star horse that has a unique look for having negative honor. It also appears to have more health and more stamina than even 3-star horses (unconfirmed). When you get to rank 2 negative honor, the next time you call your horse this unique steed will show up. It will remain as your horse until you get to neutral honor or higher. There is no deed that enters your inventory. If the horse dies, another one will show up the next time you call your horse.

I pre-ordered from Gamestop and I can't get Mo Van Barr to spawn, what am I doing wrong?
You aren't doing anything wrong, it's a bug that has been acknowledged by Rockstar and will be fixed sometime (hopefully) within the next few days.

How do I do sharpshooter rank 10 (disarm 6 people without reloading or switching weapons)?
Here is a youtube video you can watch for help (DO NOT WATCH IF YOU HAVE NOT BEATEN THE GAME, THE VIDEO CONTAINS SPOILERS)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R08_kg0eRYU&feature=player_embedded
The popular suggestion is to use the Evans Repeater or Mauser Pistols (weapons with high capacity), discharge all but 1 clip of ammo from said weapon and find an area densely populated with bad guys (such as a gang hideout). Use deadeye extensively. The less popular suggestion, which also happens to be mine, is to use a sniper rifle (such as the Carcano rifle) and lots of deadeye to shoot guns out of peoples hands. Doesn't matter where. The automatic weapon reload that happens when you enter deadeye does not count towards the reload counter. I did this challenge in Blackwater by aiming my sniper rifle at a cop, which caused him to draw his weapon to defend himself, and then I zoomed in on the cops gun with the sniper rifle, shot it out his hand while in deadeye, and then repeated the process on the next 2 cops (the cops carry a pistol and shotgun, shooting the pistol will cause him to draw his shotgun). So you can get 2 disarms per cop. Took about a minute to do.

I can't figure out how treasure works, help! (written by Fuzz)

Treasure maps all work in steps. They are numbered. You follow the steps 1-4. (there are never more than 4 steps)
They are all near some sort of landmark that is on your map, usually the name will somehow give it away. The first 5 maps overtly give you a nearby landmark's name in one way or another, the rest will always feature a very specific landmark.
The dotted line is the path you're supposed to walk. Dotted line goes around a rock in the first step, and then the second step shows another rock and an X? Walk around behind the rock and the treasure is behind it. This is just an example. I swear.
Most maps feature multiple pictures on one map, detailing each step. They don't all go together as one flowing picture, each drawing marked as a step is a separate drawing, therefore the same landmark could be in multiple drawings, just from a different perspective or with more elaborate path instructions.

It's a pretty great timekiller while you wait for a lawman to post a bounty or something.

I was actually planning on using the second-to-the-op post for guides and user made stuff (like cougar lady, dog man, etc), and there is a guide on pushing someone made that I was going to include. I actually read on that 100% guide that the bounties are posted between 7:00-7:30 AM everyday. Based on my personal observations, that seems true. The first day I tried, it was 6:40ish AM and I waited until 7:00. At exactly 7:01, sure enough, a cop emerged from the building the buildings are posted at (in Escalera) and posted a bounty. From then on I could never get the timing right, but if I saved (which advances the game clock by 6 hours) enough to make it daytime, the next time I walked out of my rented room and headed to the bounty office, a cop would be walking to towards the bounty board and post a bounty.

So 7:00-7:30AM everyday seems to be correct, and if you arrive later in the day, a bounty will still get posted.

Yes and no. There are different ranks of Deadeye, which you get for progressing throughout the story. There are items you can get which provide passive bonuses, which you get for doing certain things. There are challenges that provide bonuses for completing them. There are outfits that provide passive bonuses. When you say "level up" I think of it as improving your character, and everything I mentioned are ways of improving your character.

I'm assuming you want the bounty in Mexico since that is where you mention being in your post. My favorite spot for Mexico is Chuparosa. Go to the biggest building in the town (I think it's a church/sheriff's office), head to the second floor and go back outside onto the balcony, then head to the back of the building and go back inside. There should be a ladder there you can climb and from there you can exit out onto the third floor. On the third floor you can hop onto the roof and either do your business there or hop to the adjoining building and do your business there.

It just felt more authentic and real to me then Jack coming back years later and killing Ross. I'm pretty sure they added the Ross stranger mission as an optional ending for people who can't get by on an ending where the good guy doesn't win. To me, John doing all he did to save his family and dying, but saving his family, was a great ending. Not all stories have happy endings.

If you begin to lean one way, use the stick to move the other way. That's all there is to it. You want to stay centered on the horse. Also it's not about leaning forwards or backwards, all you need to concentrate on is how the character is moving side to side.

So I'm screwing around in Free Roam and notice there's two small posses fighting over El Presidio (the Mexican fort with the cannons), and since I'm sick of flower picking for the drat challenges I decided to go over and have a little mindless deathmatching. As the server gradually fills up, people notice that this is where all the action is and begin fast traveling to get in on it too, and eventually it turns into three four-man posses and a bunch of loners having a massive war for control of the fort, and as soon as a group gets cleared out of the fort the winner rush in and immediately turn the cannons and Gatlings on everyone outside the walls.

This is clearly what Free Roam was meant for. We need to figure out how to make things like this happen more often.

I mentioned in the last thread that we need to schedule a goon game. Last time we had an easy 16 (iirc we even had to sit out a few people since the max a free roam can hold is 16). The last time we just got 16 people that were brand new to the game and did hideouts, i'm wondering if now it might be even more enjoyable now that people have been playing for awhile and know the game. We could start off with some free roam while people gather, move onto some gang shootout/capture the bag and the end with a king of the kill type game at el presidio.

You unlock the Rolling Block Rifle at Level 20, and the Carcano Rifle at 28. This is the sort of thing that should be in the OP so here is a complete list of Weapon/Mount Unlocks in Multiplayer.

Not a terribly bad idea so there it is.

Edit: I also went ahead and updated the "horse" section of the OP to describe how horses work and even delved a little bit into how to break a horse.

The Quick and the Dead is available to stream on Netflix too. I watched it there a couple months ago. It's not a bad western but it's not one of the better ones either.

Just watch Deadwood seasons 1-3. That's about the length of 20 westerns and is better.

Welp, I got down to Mexico finally. Good to see that the ridiculous movie convention of foreigners (in their own country) speaking English but with their own words thrown in here and there is alive and well.

Do you speak Spanish? I don't, so if they made them speak Spanish I wouldn't be able to understand about half of the game. So thank you Rockstar.

You have to accept that some things cannot be authentically represented in certain types of media because doing otherwise would prevent 90% of the target audience from enjoying said media.

I never watched Deadwood, despite it being mentioned so often if the talk comes to great TV series (I love The Sopranos, The Wire, etc.) I started watching yesterday and I'm already 10 episodes in. I really had to pry myself away from it. Highly recommendable so far.

One of the best things about Deadwood and what I think is a testament to how good the entire Deadwood staff is, from the actors to the writers, is that the show doesn't suffer from the "x season is better then x" syndrome that other shows suffer from. Every season is as good as the next. So even if you are only on episode 10, it gets better (or more accurately, it stays good).

I'd actually go Legend if going Legendary actually had some real reward outside of "Hey, a new character no one will ever notice/New title no one will ever look at/a mount you'll get in like another 5 days time that people will kill you to steal" Seriously, gently caress, that's the first reaction people have to Bonzo the Bull: kill you to steal it.

Holy poo poo is the annoying truth. I stopped using the bull because as soon as I whipped it out I would get shot in the face so someone could steal it. And MP isn't like SP where you can just whistle and the mount will buck the thief off. Instead it just summons you a new one.

Picked up the game yesterday and just got to Mexico. The dialouge is insufferable, and so far too many of the stranger stories have been little 'gently caress you's to the players (haha you collected flowers for a guy's wife?? Guess what, she's dead! Isn't that hilarious).

Welp.

Would be nice of you to spoiler the end of that stranger mission. My bigger nitpick is what you would have preferred to be the conclusion to that story. Are you saying that collecting the flowers and giving them to a live guys wife, which is terribly kosher and boring, would have been more enjoyable then the guy giving them to a dead body that he lives with and still considers to be "alive", so much so that he believes she still makes him dinner and goes for evening walks with him?

That's not a bug. You don't keep your inventory when you die.

To be more specific, you lose what you've gained since your last save. The game only auto-saves after you complete the challenge or when something else happens to cause the game to auto-save. I ran into that problem once during that challenge too, but it was a god drat ghost cougar.

Just didn't want someone to read that and think dying causes you to lose all of your inventory.

I got 2 aces once and prepared myself to wipe the table clean. I push $20 in pre-flop (mind you this is at the big game in Blackwater, so $20 is chump change) and everyone at the table loving folds.

By the by, did anyone order any of the special edition stuff from their website (the dice, cards, soap and tnt candle)? I ordered 2 things when I first found out about them, which was probably about a weeks ago, and I got an email a couple days ago telling me that my order was canceled because they ended up not having enough stock to cover my order.

Just wondering if anyone else was lucky enough to get theirs shipped, or if they got hosed on the deal as well.

Well I found a new fun game to play in multiplayer: try to drive a stagecoach over the rail bridge between the US and Mexico.

Haha, you just reminded me of the time I did this during one of my first few multiplayer free roams. It's in a great spot because if you are with some guys just messing around doing the 3 gang hideouts in the western area of New Austin and then decide to go to Mexico in your brand new stagecoach from Gaptooth Breach, the quickest way is across that bridge. I ended up making it about halfway across at full speed before sending myself and a few goons plummeting into the waters below.

I've been skimming the through the thread but haven't seen this mentioned before, why is it important to make the extra save?

I also made it to Blackwater recently and now whenever I'm out and about in the countryside when I come near a camp, usually two guys sitting by a fire, they just randomly start shooting at me. I thought these were the camps you can go to to listen to someone tell a story. Can anyone clue me in to what it was I did to forever piss off these guys? It's happened maybe 4 or 5 times now.

You won't find out why you are advised to make a new save until after you have beaten the game. You will understand why on that fateful day.

As for the camp, could just be two dudes that get startled by you and think you are going to rob them. They could be setting a trap by appearingto be those camps you can go to listen to someone tell a story. They could recognize you and be the son of the uncle of the brother of the guy you killed in your outlaw days. The truth is, you will never know.

edit: oh I just thought of this one. Maybe they aren't shooting at you but are shooting at the TWO COUGARS RUNNING UP BEHIND YOU AGHHH-

If you're getting annoyed with casual aim in multiplayer free roam, it helps to remember that doing a combat roll will automatically break the lock-on the other guy has on you. Probably won't prevent you from getting plugged the first time, but it seems to throw a lot of people for a loop when they're going for the killing shot and can probably buy you enough time to return fire.

That's a pretty good tip. Also on aiming in MP, did anyone figure out if having your settings set to expert aiming will make the guys shooting at you have to aim with expert aiming? I seem to remember it being a question asked a lot of in the old thread and never saw an answer.

Gonna put BlazeKinser's tip and the answer to that question in the OP.

Redemption is a 100% Rockstar creation. Red Dead Redemption is a sequel in name (debatable) only. Oh, they are also both westerns. I guess they are a like that way too.

I seem to be permanently stuck at the notch below despite always trying to do good deeds (above example exempted).

Bounties over and over. You can do all the bounties as much as you want and you get honor, fame and money for doing them. If you go do the third tier bounties you can get something like $800, +100 fame and +100 honor per bounty.

I'd assume I get another chance, since I don't think the game would screw you out of any possible chance at getting 100%.

They do. They either cycle and after you do the original 10, you start over from bounty 1, then go to bounty 2, etc, or after you do the first 10 you just get a random one. I can't remember. I do know I did the tier 1 bounties something like 20+ times trying to get Mo Van Barr to spawn when I first started playing.

On this evening, I was crossing the Great Plains of the Northwest, when - on the top of a hill - there stood the last of the Buffalo. Silhouetted against the setting sun, the solitary animal appeared like a silent memento for this noble race of creatures that once roamed the plains in such great abundance. A tear ran down my dusty cheek, leaving a salty trail of regret, as I contemplated the perishability of all things living and beautiful. The big beast snuffled the grass, then turned to me with muscles the size of melons moving effortlessly beneath its shaggy hide. As our eyes met, I thought I could see a glimmer of recognition in its suprisingly peaceful eyes. For just one fleeting moment there was some kind of mutual understanding, that, yes, we are - in some way, through a link far in the past of this here earth - part of one and the same. Then I shot him between the eyes for five gamerscore.

This is beautiful. Can I put this in the OP?
