USAJobs needs a 'stay logged in' option and a better search function. I'm tired of searching for jobs in Country X and half of the results are Countries Y, Z and Nebraska.

I applied for two positions via applicationmanager.gov and received NORs on 4/10/11 and 4/24/11, respectively. Both closed out around those same dates.

One job is transcribing court martial proceedings on base, the other is basic administrative work for one of the flight squadrons-- not particularly high level or competitive, especially given the freeze order on new personnel PCSing into Japan (whereas I'm already here).

Regardless, I applied in April and its June, haven't heard a peep. Is this normal? What kind of wait am I looking at here before getting a result of some kind?

A quick whine: does anybody know what's going on with overseas hiring? I'm on Yokota Air Base (outskirts of Tokyo) and I'm wondering when this so-called strategic 'Pacific Pivot' is going to result in greater professional opportunities in the region. I've seen the same 10-15 lousy results appearing on USAjobs searches for half a year, most of which are Standing Register (collecting resumes just in case a vacancy appears).

Was there some kind of unannounced hiring freeze, or are agencies waiting for some sort of budgetary announcement? Where the hell did the jobs go, and are they ever coming back?

How strict are those self-assessment questionnaires?

I'm applying for an Immigration Assistant position, and one of the questions is -

2. Which of the following statements best describes your experience and/or education?

A. I have successfully completed a full four-year course of study above the high school level in any field for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite.

B. I have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-4 grade level performing complex office automation duties using word processing to edit and reformat lengthy correspondance (sic) and reports. Create and maintain spreadsheets and databases; respond to inquiries by phone and/or in writing. Review and verifying accuracy and completeness of submitted documents for benefits.

C. I have a combination of successfully completed post-high school education beyond the second year (i.e., education in excess of the first 60 semester hours) and experience as described in B above that totals at least one year.

D. I do not possess the experience or education described above.

Technically, A is most accurate, but I would easily qualify for B if not for the last two words of the description. Is A "better," and do you think I could get away with claiming B if it isn't?

Last month I had an appointment with an Air Force career specialist who explained the process to me. This may contradict with information others have received, or with positions in other branches of the military, so take the following with a grain of salt.

He explained that each answer is weighted with a certain number, and at the end of your self-evaluation you are assigned a numerical score based on your answers. For example, a 'D' answer could correspond to zero while an 'A' corresponds to 4, so that at the end your answers add up to anything from 20-50. Each position requires a certain self-evaluation score (unknown to applicants); if the cut-off is 45 and your scores only added up to 40, no human being will ever see your resume. As Manifest Dynasty noted, certain questions are probably flagged as mandatory as well, so that a 'D' answer bumps you off immediately.

If, on the other hand, you hit/pass the target number, then your application will proceed to a human being who will review your resume in order to validate your self-assessment answers. If you answered 'A- I am an expert and train others in this task', they will want to see in your resume where this has been displayed. Too many discrepancies and your resume is tossed.

Survive this process, and your resume goes on a list with the other eligible applicants. Your position on that list is determined by an automatically generated number, based on a combination of resume keyword matches with the position description and the overall score of your self-assessment. Most people hiring for a position are only going to look at the top 5 applicants (why bother looking at the 35th person on the list?).

The guy had a ton of suggestions for making it to that final list, including using the 'additional information' section to actually copy+paste the KSAs and then provide an example of how your experience corresponds with them:

quote:

1. Applicant must have knowledge of memes
While assigned as Internet Culture Specialist, I delivered over 150 briefings to unit commanders and other leadership figures...
2. Applicant must have skills in eating bacon
As Bacon Consumption Technician, responsible for eating over 200 strips of bacon over a 16 week period...

And so on..

This is only tangentially related, but does anybody know anything about winning government contracts on FBO.gov? I don't mean working for a contractor (such as the GiP thread), but rather bidding directly on government solicitations either as an individual or as an LLC.

I have some vague, half-formed fantasies along such lines but it looks like there is a ton to learn before it becomes anything more than a daydream.

Historically, how quickly do positions begin appearing after a hiring freeze ends? I'm a non-GS civilian contractor and may be getting downsized after October, which coincidentally is when the new fiscal year begins and the hiring freeze will (please God, please) come to an end.

Expecting a bonanza of jobs to materialize the very next day isn't realistic, but is there a typical timeframe for positions to start showing up on USAJobs?

Saw a job in Singapore, which bragged of housing and other benefits for stateside hire. Applied, got rejected because I'm not located in Singapore. What the gently caress, USAjobs?

I've seen a lot of postings for Contract Specialist/Contracting Specialist on USAjobs, listed under various agencies (USAF, USN, DCMA, etc). I'm interested in applying and would like any advice on becoming competitive.

Although I'm a 5 point veteran, my field was not connected to contracting. I was thinking about taking some DAU-equivalent civilian courses online in the hopes that being closer to DAWIA certification would give me a boost. Before I spend money on a course, does anybody have any input on how useful it'd actually be?

Also curious if anybody else has experience applying through USAjobs overseas. I've been applying for positions here in Japan since 2010 (probably 150+ by now) and even with so-called veteran's preference, have never received so much as a phone call...

Yep, the fact that federal contracting positions are seemingly everywhere is a large part of the appeal for me.

I do have the basic qualifications of a bachelors, 24+ business related credits, 5 pts veterans preference and some vaguely related experience, but the application process still feels like something of a lottery. I've applied for positions with everybody from the VA to the Indian Health Bureau, so fingers crossed for a jackpot!

Ugh... seems the new trend for Japan-based positions is not allowing online applications; you have to submit your paperwork either in-person or mail it in. I first started seeing it sporadically last year, but now nearly every other position is missing the 'apply online' link.
