R.D. Mangles posted:Anyone else here reading The Only Rule Is It Has To Work? I couldn't stand Lindbergh at Grantland because I thought he was incredibly tedious, but I'm about halfway through and really enjoying this. In case anyone here isn't a giant baseball nerd it's about two Baseball Prospectus writers who took over an independent league team for a season and tried to use sabermetrics to vault them to the top of their four-team league, but it's mainly about trying to run a professional baseball team as a giant baseball dork and it's really fun. I got it from the library a few days ago and it started out a little slow but their plotting at the league's pre-draft tryouts was pretty cool. And holy poo poo, they got SportsVu to hook them up with a PitchF/X setup at their sub-Frontier League independent league home field. I'm looking forward to reading the rest, should be a nice way to spend the holiday weekend.

Henchman of Santa posted:So in Gawker news that genuinely sets a worrisome precedent, Univision is taking down any post that is the subject of litigation against them. Even the one about Chuck Johnson pooping on the floor in college. I get why Univision wants to do this in the immediate Hulkster aftermath, but imagine being successfully bullied by Chuck Johnson. They also caved into the nut who claims to have invented email and to Mitch Williams even though Gawker's lawyers had that case 98% won.

GoutPatrol posted:In an almost unrelated note, everyone should read The Great American Novel by Phillip Roth, about a team in a fictional third major league that lost its stadium due to the war and had to have every game be a road game. The Frontier League had a team like that for several years, it was made up of guys who didn't make the other teams in the league and they played all 70 something games on the road. The other teams used them as a place to grab a quick replacement for injured or cut players. They were terrible except for one year where they somehow almost made the playoffs.

That is a rarity I now attribute to Faulk simply refusing to be cut. Starting in 2009, Bill Belichick probably informed Faulk annually that they were letting him go. Faulk replied with “nah” and the exact expression seen in that photo, and that was that. Faulk left the room still a Patriot, and Belichick just had to deal with that.
