It's just, the comic really did used to be this good, and today's strip is one of the worst webcomics I've ever seen. I'm baffled by it. I really do think Mind Cage and Covid broke Tom...but maybe I just have to believe that? I dunno. I think the Jeanne resolution is the most satisfying one in the comic, I really did enjoy that while reading and it felt like a natural way to use things like "Kat sees the ether differently to others" and "Annie is pretty clever about dealing with strange situations".

Who are these people?

I watched some of the new stream Tom put up on Twitch and he mentioned that he has a very vague outline of what should needs to happen in the whole story, but that events are only fleshed out one chapter at a time as he gets to them, which probably explains some of the wildly variable quality chapter to chapter.

But still it doesn't explain everything, and it doesn't feel like he's bored or tired as such, considering he was looking out for a new publisher, created a stream, etc.

I'm thinking maybe he just lost an editor or someone to bounce ideas off of, and now he's prequel trilogy George Lucas with no one around to tell him his ideas are dumb. He did at least use to have an editor, but I don't know if he does now.

To be clear this isn’t “tell the cult to knock it off” it’s “tell the cult to properly obey their messiah, Kat.”

There has never, even a single time, been a confirmation that Kat having a cult is a problem actually - that she shouldn’t wield absolute power over the body and souls of robots with a vague and aimless teenage disinterest. Instead, the problem is when those robots make decisions about how that relationship works or what it means to them, instead of explicitly asking her to make all decisions.

I've seen fun you people wouldn't believe.
Tiki torches on fire off the summit of Kilauea.
I watched disco balls glitter in the dark near the Brandenburg Gate.
All those moments will be lost in time, like crowds in rain.

Time to sleep.
Didn't Tom get married and move to New York or something a while ago? That would probably line up with him losing/changing editors.

Yes, it also coincided with covid, he mentioned in a retrospective that he had moved recently when the lockdowns started.

Tom is married to another webcomic author and they have a little baby now.

It's funny how there's some discussion over in the general webcomics thread about how Corny, the author for Never Satisfied said they were probably not coming back to that webcomic. The reasons he gave is he's a drastically different person from who he was when he started Never Satisfied 10 years prior, and frankly he hadn't planned more than some broad stuff out and kept writing in stuff on impulse that made the whole thing more complicated to reconcile.

Creating long-running epic fantasy stories as your first project as a dumb college kid turns out to be a pretty huge personal life investment if you're going to keep it going!

You'll find the actual rule was "Please stop loving the robots, Diego", but then a student named Diego enrolled long after Diego passed away, and it just made things too confusing. Especially after he asked if he had to gently caress a robot first to comply with the rule.

The comic is pretty :geno: as far as train wrecks go. So there's not much entertainment to be had unfortunately.

Robot, shadow and the seraphs are having their designated turn exiting the comic. With their storyline being resolved abruptly and without fanfare. And we're just going to move on to the next in line after this. Bonus points for creating the perfect solution to Kat's psychopomp problem. The one that was an issue for at least a couple of pages I guess? Not that it felt like a problem that had any stakes behind it anyways. Nothing feels that way anymore.

People got excited cause Robot had one of the more interesting storylines and some of the panels looked cool. But anything that was good before that gets focus now just turns into this. And that's the comic now.

A loud, deep sigh.

Well.

I'm glad another long-running plotline, possibly the longest running plotline in the comic, has been wrapped up in a montage during a side-story of a side-story, to no consequences and with no moral, message, or impact. Neat.

Now to get back to what's really important: What's Lana and Jerrick up to??

Hell yeah let's make this chapter as boring as possible.

"You knew just what to ask" was "I want to see" and "why don't you have a new body yet?". Wow Annie could never have arrived here without this non-character.

Only the robots maybe? I can't remember if the Shadow Men did.

Her being Omega is too interesting, so it either isn't the case, or is the case so it can get ruined lol.

I've been keeping up with the comic for years now, and I noticed this thread so I've come here to ask...like what the gently caress is even going on? For real, what is going on? The pacing on this comic is so weird that I don't even remember what happened 3 pages ago, and there's updates 3 times a week, so it's not like the posting is slow.

But I have utterly lost the ability to keep up with what is supposed to be happening in the comic. Wasn't the Court building some kind of teleport alternate universe thing?

The thread's current leading theory is something happened during Covid that burnt Tom out, that the reaction to the Mind Cage being so negative killed his desire to work on this project and it's floundering, or one of several other explanations for why one of the best long-running webcomics has in the past few years become an incoherent mess.

isasphere

Yes, trying to recap:

The Court has this sort of technomagic oracle object or entity called Omega that makes scarily-true predictions. It predicted Annie would die falling off the bridge (back at the start of the comic) but Kat prevented that with time-travel paradox robot birds and the aid of literal norse goddesses.

The Court wanted to trap Coyote to use him as an Ether-battery. They failed and shrugged and went back to Plan B, which is building a pocket dimension that has no Ether/magic because it's so unpredictable and unmeasurable, scientifically speaking, and they hate it.

Going to this pocket dimension will make everyone retroactively forget you. Only select people are invited.

Coyote, meanwhile, was playing a fantastic prank on everyone, including himself, because he wanted to know what it felt like to die. A part of his consciousness still was alive and kicking inside Jerrek/Loup and came out to say hi when Kat and Annie trapped Loup.

Kat and Annie trapped Loup with Robot's help, who in a fake-out to the audience tricked Loup into lowering his guard.

But anyway that wasn't 100% required because Loup was changed by the power of Lana's Love and came clean to Annie anyway.

Anyway, the whole thing was orchestrated by Coyote, because he wanted Annie and Ysengrin to fall in love with each other and then force Annie to kill Loup/Ysengrin/Coyote because the drama would be amusing.

Annie didn't fall in love with Ysengrin. It's not super clear that Ysengrin didn't fall in love with her?

Anyway, Loup fell in love with Lana, which was not part of Coyote's plan, and that angered him so much he ate Lana in one gulp.

Loup flipped out and went to fight Coyote. The two kept rolling around wrestling and fighting and accidentally landed on Zimmy who activated her reality-warping powers and engulfed the entire Court, Forest, and possibly the entire physical world?

Annie has faffed around presumably trying to reach Kat or idk, it's not clear? She reached Kat, and got distracted by a new-human who looks like Zimmy and kept being teased to be Zimmy being-confused-and-thinking-she-is-someone-else again, but turns out she was mistaken. We wasted who knows how many chapters in this.

Oh yeah and the Annie Must Become A Psychopomp plot point was kicked down the road again. She totally will be the psychopomp for the new humans to help Kat, but in the future, no pressure. One random new human died but the ether creatures that arbit reality or whatever gave Annie a freebie and helped escort him to the afterlife.

Annie found out about Robot's cult of Kat. This was bad but also not that bad, they are treating him like he was a naughty boy and has learned his lesson. Kat's cult continues to not be taken seriously by Annie and Kat, but we are not supposed to be bothered by this.

Every single plot point here keeps being dangled and dropped repeatedly, killing the momentum of the pacing over and over.
