It's a bit odd next to Annie, who's being drawn in an overly-animated fashion.

Honestly, it feels like Annie is reacting to a completely different conversation than what's being had and it's REALLY jarring.

The only way for people to make friends with Tony is off-screen because nothing he can show us will balance out how he treats his daughter.

I think this was a huge breaking point in the comic for me as well, especially with somebody who's *had* an emotionally abusive father. Just, saying "everything's cool and solved now, don't look behind the curtain at everything I've set up throughout the whole comic!" is loving buckwild to expect your readers to buy. I haven't kept up with things regularly since the Two Annies/Tony's Bizarre Redemption "Arc" catastrophe.

Annie's new most prominent character trait is being a doormat to anyone who feels like it or a mouthpiece for whatever the story currently requires.

Jesus, you're not loving kidding. I feel like all of Annie's agency has been completely robbed over the last few years and it's infuriating.

You don't see her much because they're programmed to be bad at their jobs and constantly on the verge of being fired and also they're all still buried under meters of dirt.

I made the mistake of going forward a few pages from this, where Annie's father systematically humiliates her in front of the entire class and cuts her off from every single form of support, and it made me incandescently angry at Tom's handwaving away of his abusive behavior again. gently caress Tom for how he handled Tony's abuse of Annie.

I mean I don’t think there needs to have been a big change - maybe he always intended for this to be the realization, and it’s close to the classic “adults are humans as well, for better and for worse” revelation of children’s media. But it’s calibrated to where Tony’s abusive parenting is just an example of this, rather than crossing a line.

It's also weird for the focal point of empathy to switch from the kids to the adults when we see the adults less than ever and half of the younger characters have given up all agency in the story. It feels like the entire thing has become unmoored and is just drifting aimlessly.

It definitely seems rare in this thread, but I felt the exact same way. Twin Annies was the beginning of me no longer having any idea who Annie was anymore. From the moment it was determined that both Annies were legitimate, her inner world became impossible to follow. And that was only made worse by the fact that it ended on some kind of conflict between them that was never made apparent to the reader.

Twin Annies is one of the things I most regret happening in this story.

Oh thank gently caress, it's not just me.

I've gotten the impression that, as the comic has gone on, Tom has been trying to make his style more loose/expressive. Some artstyles can carry a lot of energy by looking a bit unrefined. However, this has also resulted in a lot of weird expressions/faces. I can appreciate the effort but I can attest to it being difficult if that's not your natural inclination as an artist.

Personally, I miss this strip having actual backgrounds. Look at how flat and boring they are on this page, nothing but gradients and vague building outlines. Remember when Gunnerkrigg Court and the Forest used to feel like places instead of "I guess some teenage drama is happening in this vague space here"?

Also, Annie refusing to have any agency and simply Sideline Character-ing "don't do it!" is just... so flat and frustrating after all this time. At this point, Tom may as well Yamcha her.

Emptyquote!
Speaking of lovely webcomics, did anyone ever read Something Positive? God, what a miserable comic. I'm sure it'd be too bigoted in hindsight to read anyway but I remember petering out around the time that the author said "lmao I baited you into thinking these two characters would be romantically involved but because they're based on me and a friend of mine they literally never will be, gottem, anyway here's this new character based on my irl girlfriend" because that just felt so unfathomably petty and spiteful to your readers.

I read it for a time in the early 2000s because I thought Being A Snarky rear end in a top hat was a personality trait, but I ultimately got bored with its miserablism and its inability to do anything interesting with its characters. I put it down when Davan decided to stay in the lovely life he had at home instead of moving away with his girlfriend at the time, and that was a perfect metaphor for the comic itself: Wallowing in its self-superior misery instead of doing anything different or interesting. It looks like some things have changed but the characters are ultimately the same. Randy Milholland is apparently a really nice guy who's supportive of other creators, and that's great! But there's just nothing that draws me into picking up S*P again.

Also I really cannot understand how some of these comics like S*P and Sluggy can keep the exact same art and writing styles for 20 years, it's like they're frozen in time forever.

The one comic I hope goes on forever and ever is Jerkcity, which is apparently now Bonequest since a Jamaican restaurant bought up their old domain name.

this one is a clear example of fridging due to the fact that it is a female character who has barely existed outside of being a girlfriend.

Like somebody mentioned a few updates ago, Loup flashing back through what Lana meant to him was... her smiling in a void in a few different poses. She hasn't done anything in the comic and is barely a character at all outside of her being attached to Loup - what does he even have to remember about her? It feels very explicitly like Lana only existed for Loup's development, from the gross saving-her-from-immigrant-assault to the out-of-loving-nowhere love confession to Coyote fridging her. And this splash page feels like it's shoving her complete emptiness as a character directly at us: Look at this technically proficient but utterly empty drawing of a non-character with an equally empty expression. I think part of what's making us react so viscerally to it, as opposed to any of the other splash pages of other characters Tom's done, is that there's no there there.
