Kevin and Carlie have the same one, and so do Angela/Duran and Lise/Hawk. Doesn't that also somehow play in with the overall difficulty of the game? As in, Kevin/Carlie being easy, Angela/Duran medium and Lise/Hawk being hard? I can't remember for sure, but the game is a truly awesome game. I was so pumped about it in my teens I almost bought the JP version off of eBay so I could play it on my actual SNES.
