uhhh

I would like to state, for the record

just to lighten the mood

that two party members in The Caligula Effect 2 have attacks titled, and I quote, "Mega Yeet" and "Get hosed!"

Also I'm looking at that Monark game that came out in Japan and the combat really reminded me of that Lost Dimension game that I liked but mostly had a lukewarm reception and it turns out that Monark was also developed by some of the same people (not the same people as the obvious Persona guys tho)

Oh hey, there's an English version of Monark's starting personality test on the NISA site

https://nisamerica.com/monark/ego-analysis

And it looks like the whole "seven deadly sins" personality thing determines your battle focus

I got Envy and it said this:

"Your Envious Ego and covetous ways allow you to control Daemons that can confer status ailments and strike harder against higher-level targets!"

I can't seem to get anything else, so feel free to take the test and report what the other 6 got

Greed's gameplay specialization, since it's the last one missing and I managed to get it (though not the lore/flavor part)

"Your Greedy Ego and insatiable avarice allow you to control Daemons who can increase the number of turns they take and move to any location they please!"

Random question: What's your favorite RPG romance?

I'm going to have to go with Hiro x Lucia from Lunar: Eternal Blue

For some reason I'm reminded of Crimson Shroud, that dice-based 3DS RPG where you rolled dice on the bottom screen for attacks and thus the numbers were... well, not 'clear' but you at least knew that an attack rolled a D6, a D10 and D20 and added them which gave you an idea of it's range.

I'm in the mood for a fun throwback-y RPG. Any recommendations?

Skies of Arcadia is sort of the model of what I'm looking for: Relatively simple, throwback plot (remove all the pirate and exploratory stuff, and you've got a pretty standard 16-bit "Evil Empire, mysterious girl looking for McGuffins to save the world" story), humorous and upbeat tone with charming characters (but not necessarily against having somber, downbeat moments).

I really loved Gin, he's such an improvement on Sweet-P in every way possible, they treat him with respect and I'm even told that his 'experience' is common with regards to NB stuff. <- CE2 party member and CE1 villain spoilers

Fair enough, it's been a while so I might just be hyperfocusing on the whole "You're probably a gross sweaty fat loser IRL!" stuff Mifue says during the confrontation And Mifue clearly is not coming from a healthy place from her own problems

Yuito's story is really withholding with info, so I recommend people start with Kasane, which actually gets into the mysteries of the story much faster than Yuito does

What RPG do you find the funniest?

I go with Skies of Arcadia, it's got a lot of fun moments, like Vyse and Aika doing their cool handshake and then Drachma going "HANDS ON THE WHEEL", or Aika's exasperation at that one general's ship having such a big cannon

I'd honestly say Disgaea is the poster child for how to have a game that's funny most of the time and yet can still perfectly deliver legitimately shocking and emotional plot twist and reveals

like seriously, Disgaea 4 and 5 have some legit very good emotionally dramatic moments, even when they are being undercut by Val nerding out over sardines or Seraphina painting all the men in the cast as being idiots in love with her

i highly dislike the direction Ys has gone in since seven. nox especially. pointless and boring tower defense segments, a bland environment, a rigid and repetitive loop. but the biggest problem for me is that it's just not the blazing fast carnage that Napishtim/Oath/Origin had. it's just an uptempo ARPG where you have to constantly switch to characters that aren't fun to play in order to do proper damage to enemies

I'll have you know I enjoy every character in the party-based Ys games

Especially Renegade because he reminded me of Hugo from Origin

I was thinking about how weapons are typically divided up among party members in RPGs. There are basically two schools I can think of in terms of how RPGs handle different weapon types.

1. Every character has One (and only One) weapon type they can use. Some characters may share categories and can swap weapons if they want (Like Elliot and Emma in Cold Steel), but Rean can only use tachis, Laura can only use greatswords, Jusis can only use fencing swords, etc.
2. What weapons a character can use is based on what skills they've invested in some sort of skill tree or skill point system, which can be divided up on a class by class basis (see: Etrian Odyssey and Landskenect's ability to use swords or axes). More common in class-based systems but sometimes it shows up in character-based ones (Dragon Quest 8 and 11).

The only RPG I can think of where there are multiple overlapping weapons characters can use is the Golden Sun series, where there are a few general categories that some characters have access to but not all (Only the two more 'magey' characters, Ivan and Mia, could use staffs, but Ivan could also use light/shortswords along with the more physically-inclined Isaac and Garet, who could also use longswords and axes.)

How do you like weapon types to be divided up? Do you have any preferences?

I have a theory that on average, any given otome game has better writing than any given dating sim for men

But I have absolutely no way to prove it other than the whole "Men are attracted to looks, women are attracted to personalities" belief resulting in otome writers writing... actual characters rather than just pretty girls with quirks

women love dating sims 'for men' is the thing. like the otome genre exists literally because of that. women were already playing those games and enjoying them and otome games were created to cater to them more specifically. thats why all the old dating sims like tokimeki have an otome game side series. there's a gender essentialism to how people view this stuff in the west that is not borne out by literally any actual evidence or historical precedent.

fair point, I guess I must have been colored by the fact that I find poo poo like panty shots or ridiculously big-breasted women or a cast consisting of nothing but -dere variants annoying, and otome games don't usually have poo poo like that so I assume they're 'better' by default

I mean, I have an appreciation for games where there is something to do besides just romance, even if romance is the clear focus

also for that person a while back who asked for a matchmaking simulator: Massive Chalice has that as a thing you do, making pairings of heroes to have kids, even if it's in service of XCOM-esque combat and a Darkest Dungeon style personality flaws/perks systems

That Precis and Ashton thing you mentioned (Never played a Star Ocean before, so the most I know is 3's big twist and that Edge Maverick is a really dumb protag), but it reminded me of a system I like in games that I wish I saw more of:

I've always found the idea of party members helping each other by teaching each other skills an interesting concept to build an RPG around. The other example I can think of is the Skill Link system from Xenoblade. You could build it based on an affinity system but you don't have to.

Now, obviously, there could be a problem with it making every character roughly similar, at least within their basic groups (physical attackers and mages) but I always thought the solution should be simple: This system can make characters more well-rounded, and help carve off their weaknesses, but someone should never become stronger than the dedicated specialist by learning from them.

The basic example in my mind for that would be something to the effect of "The party mage can teach the dedicated healer some basic offensive magic-but the healer, Light-based magic possibly aside, wouldn't be able to learn all-targeting offensive elemental magic, just stronger single-target spells." The thief might be able to learn some damage mitigation from the tank, but that shouldn't mean the thief stops being a fragile glass cannon, etc. etc.

Fair enough. I like to ask about RPGs that do atypical settings or experiment with influences beyond the usual fantasy and sci-fi stuff, hence the earlier Toku RPG ask. Probably also why I really like, say, Wild ARMs and Boktai (Western-based settings, though there is still fantasy and sci-fi stuff) and wish that there was more than two Legend of Legaia games (wuxia/martial arts, and also the second one is way worse than the first).

You ever surprise yourself with how fast and hard you fall into something?

I was browsing itch.io for in-browser RPGs and I found this, a demo/prologue for a game that I didn't know I wanted until I played through it.

https://majimjam.itch.io/hyadesrpg

There's a clear Mother/Earthbound influence, but I didn't expect to fall in love with the characters this hard and this fast. The dialogue is witting, funny, and charming, I'm interested in all of the main party, the gameplay, once it opens up a bit by introducing the 'main mechanic', is very fun and has the potential to get very tactical later on, and I'm interested to see where the plot goes from here. It's short, but it is a demo. I emailed the developers to show my support, and I really hope that you all enjoy this, too.
