No RPG thread is complete without talking about the Gothic series (and Risen, its spiritual successor, and before you ask, no, I don't consider ArcaniA a Gothic game.) They're a series of brutally hard (for differing reasons, depending on the game) German-developed open-ended RPGs.

Each of the Gothic games & Risen (save 3) boast smaller, more detailed game worlds than the Elder Scrolls series, but they're much more worthwhile to explore, as none of the loot is randomly generated. It's entirely open to you from the start, but throws up "natural" barriers in the form of stupidly strong monsters lurking in some areas just off the beaten path. But the best part is is that you can either sneak past them and gain some excellent loot for the early game, or if you're crazy enough, take them on.

Another thing I like about the series is that you can definitely feel a sense of character progression, because at the beginning, your character can barely swing a sword and can't survive being hit by anything stronger than a fly (which is where most of the difficulty comes in.) But by the end, you're swinging around a two-hander and carving through hordes of orcs without blinking an eye. I don't really get that sense from any other RPG, as most of them focus on linear monster progression.

The main problem I had with the the first two Gothics is that they both employ a really, really clunky keyboard-only control scheme that takes some getting used to.

The first two Gothics are available on GOG (both are priced at $9.99 each) and 3 & Risen are available on Steam.

One major piece of advice to people who buy Gothic 2 Gold off of GOG - for the love of all that is holy, DON'T install Night of the Raven if it's your first time to play through the game. Installing it shoots the difficulty THROUGH THE GODDAMN ROOF and makes an already hard game nigh-impossible.

One last thing - there is a (very small) RPG-oriented channel on SynIRC - #crpg, anyone is welcome, so join up.

I'm in the mood for a new RPG and I've knocked my choices down to two: Divinity II: Dragon Knight Saga and Fallout: New Vegas. Now, I know one's an Euro-RPG and the other is American and I know what I'm getting into for both, but does Divinity II's other areas stay fairly large or is the area that's featured in the demo the largest you'll find? And is the content in Flames of Vengeance comparable to the main campaign?

I did some reading up on FO:NV earlier today and it looks like it's a much bigger game than FO3, content-wise. Is this really the case? Is the game any harder than FO3 (with the exception of Hardcore mode)? Is the PC version glitcher than the PC version of 3?

I've been in kind of a bad (and cheap) RPG mood recently, having swooped in on Gamersgate's 5 year anniversary sale and picked up 3 games from them (Gods: Lands of Infinity "Special" Edition, The Chosen: Well of Souls and Space Hack) alongside Gothic 3: Forsaken Gods Enhanced Edition and ArcaniA (which I'm surprisingly enjoying) from the Steam sale. But there have been a few other "bad" RPGs that have caught my eye that I can barely find anything on outside of a few reviews and random videos on Youtube. Can anyone with first-hand knowledge tell me just how bad these following games are:

NeverEnd
Dimensity
Hazen: The Dark Whisper
Greed: Black Border
Hard To Be A God
Dawn of Magic

Can anyone suggest a good RPG that isnt some crapfest JRPG or some worthless shat-out RPGMaker game? Preferably nothing from the 90s (2d/isometrics are fine as long as the interface and visuals arent trash) since Ive played em all and dont care to put up with them again. Ive played all the usual suspects/popular RPGs and am just trying to find something Ive overlooked, some crazy Eastern European RPG that Ive never heard of, or RPG-lites like Deus Ex, only good. Id like to stay away from fantasy but thats like asking a blind man to get you water in the desert.

I would mention I dont have a console but nobody makes good RPGs for them anyway, so.

If you haven't played them, you might want to check out the two Eschalon games - they're 2D isometric RPGs, but they're fun games. They both have large, non-linear worlds to explore too and are very reminiscent of the Exile/Avernum games, but with one character instead of an entire party.

So I've played the hell out of pretty much all the Infinity Engine games and just recently got myself a MacBook. Now, it's no PC (oooh, burn... etc) and I do like me some gaming from time to time, so I bought CrossOver and have got a couple things to work on it, but was wondering if there are any good RPGs that work natively on the Mac (finished KOTOR so no love there, and I tire of Diablo after 10 minutes), so maybe you can suggest a decent GOG game or a Mac-native RPG for someone who loved the Inifnity Engine titles, the Neverwinter Nights games, Dragon Quest IX on the DS, seriously dislikes random encounter combat, favours stories over Diablo style number games, and so on. Lately I've been playing the hell out of Heroes of Might and Magic 3 and 5. Love that series.

Suggestions?

Have you by any chance given Arcanum, Betrayal at Krondor or Arx Fatalis a shot? All three are available on GOG. Although I'd recommend Arcanum over the bunch, while not brimming with story does have some interesting side quests and a much more fleshed out atmosphere than most other RPGs. Plus the soundtrack is fantastic.

There's only the one really difficult mission, which is pretty manageable once you know what to do (admittedly, knowing what to do isn't easy). If anybody ends up getting VC, I'd be happy the walk them through how to get past that mission.

Care to indulge me then? That mission alone is the one reason why I dread making any sort of real progress in VC, despite enjoying what I've done so far.

About 3 hours into the first Persona remake on PSP. Good god is this game ugly with a horrid font that's annoying to read. Is this thing as short as I think it is (only a handful of dungeons it seems)? I probably won't ever touch Snow Queen based on how frustrating I hear it is.

If Persona is anything, it's not short. Some of the later dungeons in the game get absurdly long (I'm looking at you Deva Yuga and the final dungeon) and take upwards to a few hours to get through, with very few save points in them. To top it all off, the Snow Queen quest is even longer.

Yep, a totally decent game. Play it with a 360 controller on Hardcore and hope for a Dark Alliance type of thing. Don't come in with any expectations about Dungeon Siege or about Obsidian and I think you'll be satisfied.

I actually found the writing in Dungeon Siege 3 up to Obsidian standards. It's not as good as say, the best bits in Mask of the Betrayer or Alpha Protocol, but there was a lot of things in there that made me chuckle. Plus there's Reinhardt, who is pretty drat hard to hate if you truck him about as a companion.

The current PSN flash sale ends tomorrow, and I have some cash to burn, so I'm trying to decide between Tales of Graces F and Atelier Escha & Logy: Alchemists of the Dusk Sky. I'm a really big fan of the Tales series (having played all of the US released ones save Vesperia, Graces F and Dawn of the New World), but I've heard good things about Atelier Escha & Logy, although I haven't played any of the Atelier games outside of the first Atelier Iris game on the PS2. How different is Escha & Logy from that game? To give a frame of reference, I played through the majority of Atelier Iris: Eternal Mana and despite a few hiccups, did enjoy it.
