Xenogears goes without saying, as it's probably the best example of a story heavy RPG that is actually good.

It's good until the second disk. Then it tells you the story rather than letting you play it out. It was like they finished the first disk and someone noticed they ran out of budget or time and put the second together in a week :( I was really disappointed when I got there back when I first played the game (also my PS1 always liked to crash at a certain point in one of the huge monologues someone gave)

Yeah it's Ar Tonelico which I got the second one a while back since I enjoyed the first, but for some reason nowadays I don't really wanna play jRPGs.

I thought the first one was interesting to say the least. It had a lot of potential, but all fights just devolved into protect the caster -> 1 shot everything after charging up. I really liked the idea behind syncing up your caster and melee characters and their attacks got better at each interval.

I ought to try playing it again and see if I can actually get through it. I was surprised to learn there is a second out for PS2 and a third coming out for PS3.

Why the witcher is the best RPG: prepatory alchemy is like 70% of the combat.

That's what sort of bothered me. You want to make a fight easy? Just pop a potion with low toxicity that has albedo in it, then buff yourself with high toxicity potions. I think you can use all the useful ones without any adverse effects from toxicity due to the albedo. Ah well. Was still a fun game :)

Huh, i thought albedo only effected the potion you were using it on. Not that it matters, i'm pretty confident the only ~~Required~~ potion is swallow, and all the rest are flavour.

No, it reduced toxicity on all potions you drink within the next game hour.

Also potions were integral to the way Witchers fought. That's cool, it adds flavor and fun to the game. I guess the thing I was opposed to was that once you started finding high quality bases for your potions, it was just so easy to stay totally hopped up on very strong potions with no adverse effects. It is fun to totally thrash your enemies. I just think that albedo should have been harder to get a hold of so that it was a valuable commodity that you saved for a rough spot.

Ar Tonelico 2 is really, really good if you can get past some of the camp.

How does it compare to the first? I really liked the combat idea and I thought the story was interesting. However, the combat focused way too much on your powerful caster and not nearly enough on your other characters, at least at the point in the game I got to. The whole relationships thing was really offputting as well.

Valkyrie Profile for the DS...

In addition, they did away with the stupid breaking stuff from Valkyrie Profile 2. You're not only welcome, but encouraged, to overkill the poo poo out of things with soul crushes without losing out on monster parts.

Encouraged? More like required. If you don't overkill the poo poo out of everything you come across and make the sky rain with blood, the game will try to gently caress you by the woman who gave you the plume unleashing a Shade into a future battle. Shades are extremely difficult to kill versions of recruitable characters mixed into the normal enemy like-up that are drat near impossible to kill without Pluming a character to take them on.

It's actually worth it not to fill up your Sin meter on a NewGame+ run just to take them on and get their drops.

Good to know. I have only played the first few battles and have been sure to fill up the meter all the way. Regardless, the fact that I was effectively penalized for this in VP2 was really obnoxious. No, I don't want to collect parts to gain skills, I just want to murder everything with soul crushes!

I loved Just Cause 2, though I never got round to finishing it simply because it's so insanely huge that I can't even try to head for a mission without getting massively distracted.

Not to mention that some of the faction missions were way more fun than the story line missions. For example, there is a faction mission where you have to stop missiles from being launched but you are too late to stop the final one and have to hop into a jet and take it out in the air. There are also some escort (or kidnapping in some case) style missions that are insanely fun. I remember trying to drive some limo down a mountain, getting fed up with the switchbacks and just plowing straight down the mountain with police hot at my heels, laughing the entire way.

In addition, causing general mayhem, listening to Rico's ridiculous one-liners ("Take that you pipeline jerks!") and playing with the game engine (mostly by falling, driving cars off cliffs/mountains, tethering people to things you launch into the air, tethering cars on the race track to overpasses and watching them flip around, etc) also took up a lot of my time when playing the game. I also enjoyed exploring a lot. The game world is absolutely beautiful, and it's impressive that you can see for kilometers in front of you and never experience any sort of slowdown.

Man, it was a great game. I hope they make another one and fix some of the things that I didn't like so much about it.

I've seen The Last Remnant here a few times and I can't seem to find answers to some of my small questions elsewhere, so maybe someone here knows! What does having a big chain counter do for me? Other than stat differences (seems like some weapons have higher physical attack or higher magic attack), are there any differences between using, say, an Axe or a Katana or a Broadsword on Rush? Is there anything different about leveling power grip from one handed weapons? I can't seem to see that combat arts do anything but damage, so I'm kind of lost as to what I should try to do with Rush.

I have a quick question about characters and their item requests in The Last Remnant. I have recruited Baulson and he has several of all of the items he requests. What do characters use them for? Upgrading their weapons? How do I get him to use them? Does he just not have enough of one of them?

I recently started playing ChronoTrigger...

If you're up for playing another SNES era RPG, pick up Tales of Phantasia. It's one of my favorite RPG of that era. There's a fan translation for the SNES version and there is a GBA version of it as well, which, I believe, includes a bonus character. It blows all of the other Tales of games out of the water.

The fan translation is pretty funny in for some parts, though I can't remember how some of the characters, mostly Arche and Klarth, were supposed to act.

This. If they had done away with the break system for farming monster parts, it would be great combat. Once you have all the skills you want, it does have great combat, but before then, it's often a hassle, which is unfortunate :(

It's also unfortunate that you couldn't equip Alicia with a bow, cause everyone knows Lenneth with a bow in VP1 was the best :colbert:

The game is pretty funny and it has some potential, but I had lots of issues getting the room setups I wanted and ended up never finishing it. Like Disgaea, Soul Nomad has an Item World style system where you can level up your rooms. I just don't like that type of gameplay, but I know others do.

I haven't played the game in years, but I seem to remember that when you get your first bow, the attacks she has available for it completely out class her attacks with a sword, so you ought to use the bow for a while.

I am mostly worried that if I get to too high a level I won't be able to effectively use Cool Dudes I get later on in the game. If I just play normally and do the sidequests as they appear, I won't mess up future additions to my force, will I?

I'd be more worried about character planning than being too high of a level. I found it really obnoxious that I wanted my characters to go one direction, but through poor planning watched them go another without a means to correct it easily.

Could you give me some suggestions about how to be proactive about it?

If I knew more about the game I would. It was one of the really frustrating things for me. I happened to turn several of my characters into item-healing classes when I wanted them to go down a different tree. It actually caused me to stop playing and I haven't had a chance to get back to trying again.

Basically check out the wikia that's out there and look at the class change mechanics and what is required for each class.

That is because you looked at the Wiki and wanted to control your classes without fully understanding the system. You're really not supposed to do this if you are casually playing the game. Were you playing a dual wield Rush who was using items out of curiosity?

That was exactly the problem. I had no understanding of the system at all, because all of things that control class change are hidden from the player. No, I was going power grip Rush, and yes I was using Herbs a decent amount, though I was trying to keep it balanced with items/mystic to keep him on the path of a Warrior.

All this PSIV talk has me wanting to play it again! It was the game that got me into RPGs back in the 90s. I can still remember playing it on Sega Channel back when I was a kid :allears:. It's too bad that the Phantasy Star series turned into an action RPG series. I'd love to see some more turn based Phantasy Star (or just more turn based RPGs in general :().
