Fun Shoe
I haven't had time to put it on SoundCloud yet, but the other day I went back to a song on my first album I wasn't satisfied with the mix of to see what I could do with it.

Between these two versions, I swapped drum plugins from SONiVOX's Universal Big Bang to SSD, went from a free Farfisa plugin to Arturia's, added a brassy synth line to the right channel for balance, and generally went through with new tools and two years of experience to fix what I didn't like.

Far warning, the song is intensely political. I want to keep the focus here on the production.

Here's the old version:
https://faustbot.bandcamp.com/track/scratch-a-liberal

And the new:
https://faustbot.bandcamp.com/track/scratch-a-liberal-2022

What made the biggest difference by far was the two years of experience. It took longer to undo the mistakes I made in the first, prior to just scrapping most of the plugin chains and starting fresh, than mixing the new version. I wanted to re-record the vocals, but I've been sick.

I'm much happier with the new version.

nah chill
Here's two of my newer tracks:

go towards hell - a straightforward synthwave homage. This is pretty genre-specific and structured for me, I really wanted to ask for some feedback before release, but I was excited and sorta jumped the gun and put it out. I get Analysis Paralysis hardcore so I'm content to move forward with the final cut. I had 80% of this track pocketed for a while because I thought it was good enough for some sort of EP release but that line of thinking had me standing in my own way.
https://soundcloud.com/nonnonchalant/go-towards-hell

Attitude Adjuster - Can't give a straight answer on what the heck genre this is. Anybody have any ideas? I labeled it IDM but gosh does labeling a structured collection of my brainfarts as "Intelligent" make me feel like a jackass. I enjoy the changes and movements. The bass feels like something I would've played in a punk band if I ever tuned to drop C.

this isn't good but I'm posting it because I'm proud of it.

I've always wanted to be more musical but never really had the opportunity as a kid and as an adult just never went for it. I've always been a big finger drummer though. I saw a video of fred again playing a song live on his Maschine Mk3 and kind of thought hey.. is that the instrument I've been practicing my whole life to play?

aNyways, a ton to learn. a ton a ton a ton. but this thing let me make this very rough track in maybe 20 minutes, after owning it for a week and putting in ~10 hours of mostly just loving around. I am going to put in the time and work and become a loving master on this thing I swear it.

and even if I don't I'm having an utter blast. this is pretty much just a couple live beats laid down, not much editing - and then some effects added with the extremely fun performance bar (all the tremelo at the beginning)

Thank you people for posting things, they are good and I like them, and want to hear more of everything.

I've been busy with company stuff but finished this off and have another nearly done as well. Friend was starting a campaign for some space game so I put most of this together while we were making characters/worlds/ships etc so space was very much the theme of it. Classical start, synth finish.

I posted this on Spotify and stuff way too early before I realized lots of this song's tracks were mono. I did a quick improvement, and posted it here on Soundcloud. It's called "Erstwhile Riescave", where I tried to capture reoccurring nostalgia of my early days in Boston, frequenting crowded apartment gatherings, but those days have passed.

I really enjoyed this! It felt both old and new to me at the same time, somehow. And I dug the lyrics. Impressionistic, dare I say angry. My last new tune that popped out of me, vaguely similarly to yours, came out with this impressionistic accusatory theme that I'm totally leaving alone because it was cathartic.

Your synth rhythm reminds me a little of what I like about Nonnonchalant's tracks, too.

I'm gonna play this one again now.

If I knew how I'd put a trippy King Crimson guitar part with this. Something sparkly that Adrian Belew might play on a Strat. Or something contrapuntal with that 80's pop-synth guitar sound like, say, Roxette.

Thanks Doc! You're right about the angry lyrics. As I was writing the lyrics, I was surprised at how angry it came out...and I was writing to myself! Like you, I found it cathartic.

Thanks for the kind words. I'm going to explore your Soundcloud over coffee this morning.

Edit: Good stuff! We Face It Alone is really good. To me, it has a 70's Bowie deep cut feel.

I felt like piano, so I tried writing a little phrase/motif for one of the stock Renoise piano instruments. Seems to be in G, and because I've been practicing the scales it ended up wavering between the Dorian and Aeolian mode.

Untitled piano thing

Well, I think it's pretty. :shobon: It would be cool to write more piano works, but :laffo: at the thought of learning to play these myself - I'll have the computer do it for me, thanks.

I'm also gonna try my hand at mixing and mastering with this track. Wish me luck lmao.

Hello there.

I finished another new track:

https://soundcloud.com/jeff-leonard...=social_sharing

This song is about my struggles with depression & anxiety (not a super original idea, I know) and has been languishing in a half finished state with just a few lyrics for over a year. I had a breakthrough a few weeks ago and then everything started to come together.

If you like, have a listen. I think it turned out pretty good.

Thanks! That organ is actually recorded samples from a 1980s Farfisa transistor organ, but run through another plugin that does the leslie speaker thing ("Spin" from GG Audio).

Everyone's grandma used to have an electric organ, right? But now nobody seems to care about them anymore, it's like an almost forgotten bit of history. You can go buy one for $1 since there are so many out there and nobody wants them, but most of them are starting to break since they're 40+ years old. I went looking for a Farfisa transistor organ plugin and there's almost nothing. Arturia has the Farfisa V but that's 1960s - I want that 70s/80s sound like the Farfisa Metropolitan. I found this sample pack and that's what's used in the song.
