So I guess maybe this is a good place to ask what we're all going to do when Soundcloud eats a giant bowl of rear end in three months. https://techcrunch.com/2017/07/12/soundshroud/ quote:But as security ominously filed into SoundCloud’s meeting rooms at its offices around the world during the all-hands video conference broadcast from its Berlin headquarters, the startup’s staff discovered they wouldn’t be getting the answers they wanted. Instead, sources at SoundCloud tell TechCrunch that founders Alex Ljung and Eric Wahlforss confessed the layoffs only saved the company enough money to have runway “until Q4” — which begins in just 80 days. [Correction: 80 days, not 50 days]

It's a crazy easy platform for that, and I really would hate to see it go away. IDK whether hosting podcasts on Bandcamp is even possible, but I guess I have to start looking into it. e: It's worth mentioning that the most likely outcome is soundcloud getting bought, not evaporating completely. Not right away, anyway.

I've had this podcast on iTunes since literally the week they started hosting podcasts. I want to keep it updated for historical reasons if nothing else. I've got my own hosting and all that, but I just really like the "drag and drop and it's already on the podcast" sorta thing.

im_sorry posted:I don't really have much musical knowledge, but I impulse bought Sonar during a Steam sale a few years back, and have been playing with it off and on since then (and spent way too much money on VSTs I'll probably never use). The results of my songwriting practice are at https://soundcloud.com/the_door_is_scary - hopefully, I'm actually getting better at this. I dig the general aesthetic and the sort of aggro punchiness of it. Are these intended to be just sketches of ideas, or full songs? If the latter, you might think about throwing in some bridges or B parts to break things up. As it is it seems like you're pulling parts in and out to add variety, which is definitely worthwhile, but throwing in some more substantial changes will help keep the listener engaged. e: that being said I don't do, or listen to, much of that style of music so maybe I'm coming at it with the wrong set of expectations

I'm working on a new project that sorta spun out of a thing I made for the synth thread compilation. It's a concept album about robots resurrecting dead people to turn them into the brains of spaceships, and they bring back a couple who died in a car accident. Which is great because they get to stay young and in love forever and explore space and all that. Anyway my musical goal with the whole project is to break out of my normal process and do stuff very differently from how I normally do it (using vocoders and lots of synths, using found sound, changing the way I compose entirely). This is so far out of my comfort zone that I don't even know what genre you'd call it, but I'm enjoying the hell out of it and other people seem to like it too. I've got six tracks mostly done but only three all the way finished: https://soundcloud.com/danwarren/who-are-you-now-1 https://soundcloud.com/danwarren/oh-you-temporary-thing https://soundcloud.com/danwarren/sail-or-anchor

Huh. For me it's been more of an issue of it being usable at all, but honestly that may be more Bitwig's fault than Izotope's. Some of the newer Arturia plugins seem to have similar issues.

PoizenJam posted:The instrumental to this one is very cool- the intro reminds me of background music that might be used in Breaking Bad or something. The vocals pull it away from that aesthetic slightly but in a good way. Very haunting. Thanks! The whole song initially started as me just screwing around with pitch shifters, and was essentially written around that creepy effect.

Agreed posted:I like "It Tolls For You" and also your track "Move It" that autoplayed afterward, and they sounded good together too. I am new to samplers like Spitfire's collections but I am really enjoying the BBC Discover plugin and am grateful they make it available like they do. I hope to add more when I can - you have some cool sounds! The BBC Discover plugin is fantastic, and the fact that they give it away for free is unbelievable. I have a lot of string/symphony libraries that cost many hundreds of dollars and I find myself firing up the Spitfire plugin more often than not because it's easy to use and sounds great. Not as flexible as some of the big libraries, but often you don't need all of the bells and whistles.

Last week I was playing around with sampling some sounds from an old data cassette as well as an XDR toneburst. I ended up using those sampler instruments to flesh out a bit of music I'd already been working on, and the end result sounds like a discarded and poorly weathered cassette of some old video game music. https://soundcloud.com/danwarren/spaghetti-code

It's actually a cassette tape that data was recorded onto. Back in the days of the very first home computers many of them used cassette tapes for data storage. If you actually listened to the audio of one it sounded a lot like an old modem when they first connected. For example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wVsY9PVIKsQ
