I can't remember if I posted this before, but here's mine: https://m.soundcloud.com/michaelnixmusic

Trve Cvlt Svrf is a black metal inspired surf rock song, Dead Beat and I Miss You are two different strains of post-punk, Peroxide and Predator are synth driven, cyberpunk inspired instrumentals, and Needle and High is a dark lounge number.

I'm working on electro punk and surfy post-punk albums now, so I'll post them when they're done, but that means I won't be updating the ol' Soundcloud for a while.

I released a 70's car chase funk song last night: https://soundcloud.com/michaelnixmusic/what-goes-around-comes-around

It was an experiment to see if I could make a professional sounding song with the cheapest physical gear I have and, with the exception of the paid version of Reaper, all freeware software and plugins. The only non-free effect is the physical wah pedal, which is a cheap Donner one. The guitar and bass are real instruments, and the verse bass line is the most difficult instrumental line I've ever recorded. Those were recorded direct line and using amp sims, Swanky Amp for the guitar, and Lostin70's BassDeluxe for both bass lines. The synth is Fullbucket's Mono/Fury with a little reverb. The drums are the Millo-drums_v.1 kit from the standalone drum machine program Hydrogen.

I think I succeeded in my goal. I'm going to add vocals for my next cheap song for the added production complexity, but I'm really happy with how this one turned out, and and more that happy to talk production if anyone has questions.

This is great! One of my favorite things to do when I'm short of projects is to just write music for an imaginary old TV show and this falls straight into that slot.

This is great, too! What did you use for those drums? They sound amazing.

I have been getting into synths this year and I made a thing to learn. It's a 1 minute 30 second loopable track (though if there is a way to loop it gaplessly on SoundCloud I have not figured it out), thanks for listening if you do, and thank you for any feedback you might have also.

First time I've ever recorded keys/synths, and the first track I've put up in years where I performed all of the parts. I got a couple midi keyboards earlier this year and I tell ya I wish I'd got into all this waaaaay sooner :)

I'm in the same synth boat. Working with midi synths has drastically improved my workflow to the point that, on a good run, I can knock out a song start to finish in two nights. I just finished recording my second album over the course of a year because of that. Now to just wait on album art and actually try marketing this one a bit so I sell more than one copy.

Here's the first album: https://faustbot.bandcamp.com/releases

My 2nd full length album is out now!

And Bandcamp:

I'm really proud of how this turned out. All of these songs were written and produced in the last 6 months except for Neuroticism, which was written almost 10 years ago and subsequently denied by every band I've ever joined, despite it being one of my favorite pieces of music I've written, and definitely the weirdest solo I've written:

If you like it, please share it out. Every bit helps!

Your tracks have inspired me to get into synths more and are teaching me a lot about getting them to sound good.

I just started getting into synths from guitar about a year ago and gave already popped out 2 full lengths. Working with midi is really easy.

This series was really helpful as a quick primer when I was starting out: https://youtube.com/watch?v=xyVFIPtOsm8

I've always wanted to compose for video games, so I decided to build out a CV by writing music for a made up game. The first two songs, representing the pre-start screen text crawl and a demon haunted beach level, are available here, and I'll be updating that playlist as I write and record more.

What with Halloween coming up and their front man dying back in July, I decided to do a cover tribute of a song by World/Inferno Friendship Society. I think it came out well.

I have an EP and what looks like is becoming a double album in the works so I haven't put out a one-off SoundCloud track in a while, but today was the first time I ever heard Jordan Peterson's voice and I just had to make it dance.

My newest single is officially released in 8/12, but I put it up on Bandcamp for listening and pre-order. The song is new wave/synthpunk, with a bonus punk arrangement for anyone who buys it for a dollar.

It's also my most over-the-top political song, and that's saying something, so fair warning about that.

I put out a couple new songs over the last week.

First up is a synthpunk/new wave song in my normal style and my least subtle political song, Abortion Is a Human Right:

https://faustbot.bandcamp.com/album/abortion-is-a-human-right-2

That one has a punk arrangement bonus track for people who buy it.

The goal for the Faustbot project is to make synth heavy new wave that feels like punk, and I think I succeeded here. The secret is using acoustic drums; in this case, a processed version of the SSD Pure 60's preset with a handful of different EQs, compressors, and saturators to give them a heavy punch while keeping a sped up 60's groove. Electronic drums and drum machines turn the sound more electronic than punk.

Which brings me to this instrumental which uses AIR's Boom drum vst.

https://faustbot.bandcamp.com/track/bring-the-funk

The change in drums influenced the writing of the track to something more generically electronic, but it was too fun of a song not to share.

I wrote it after trying one of the bass presets in Cherry Audio's Elka-X, which was only slightly modified for the main riff. The rest of the song flowed quickly after that.

I haven't had time to put it on SoundCloud yet, but the other day I went back to a song on my first album I wasn't satisfied with the mix of to see what I could do with it.

Between these two versions, I swapped drum plugins from SONiVOX's Universal Big Bang to SSD, went from a free Farfisa plugin to Arturia's, added a brassy synth line to the right channel for balance, and generally went through with new tools and two years of experience to fix what I didn't like.

Far warning, the song is intensely political. I want to keep the focus here on the production.

Here's the old version:
https://faustbot.bandcamp.com/track/scratch-a-liberal

And the new:
https://faustbot.bandcamp.com/track/scratch-a-liberal-2022

What made the biggest difference by far was the two years of experience. It took longer to undo the mistakes I made in the first, prior to just scrapping most of the plugin chains and starting fresh, than mixing the new version. I wanted to re-record the vocals, but I've been sick.

I'm much happier with the new version.

I have one song to left write lyrics for for an upcoming covid themed synthpunk/new wave EP, but, while I like the music for this one, I can't think of what to write it about that isn't already covered in other songs.

https://m.soundcloud.com/michaelnixmusic/f-this-job

Cherry Audio's Polymode is fantastic for swirling synth pads, by the way. I've been using it for that purpose in a lot of songs lately.
