I don't share my music much, and now I have a soundcloud. First opinion I got about this is that they hated it. :) I expect people to not like it, but I wasn't ready for that. Gotta get used to it! Rip me apart, I guess.

I think it's pretty great! Synths are super cool sounding!

Thanks for the compliment. Means a lot. It's made from soft synth I've been writing, and planning to make a plugin with it. I couldn't help to edit down some recording of loops that slowly mutate.

More than what I'm commenting on deserves more praise. That is always a given, because so much of this music is so good and sound professional. I just wish the world worked different so that we all could actually live off the effort that is put into this stuff.

I’ve been putting up some electronic music occasionally the past couple years and while I am feeling more comfortable I am in a bit of a rut and could use some feedback on what I’ve finished. I am mostly working on House/Techno songs with some Breakbeat and some other tracks for friends.

Hoping to make better music this year and work on what isn’t working.

I actually really think a lot of these tracks are using unique sounds and staying away from cookie cutter formulas with sound design. It's tough to make a judgement on your own music. I listen to songs that I think are perfect, but to the artist themselves, they are often uncomfortable with it.

Some of these reminds me of this Orb mix album "Impossible Oddities from Underground to Overground: The Story of Wau! Mr. Modo"; kinda like their all-time favorite tracks from back in the day that inspired them. I just remember I have a poster of this album cover, which there is a lot of spectacular stuff going on with it.

Last week I was playing around with sampling some sounds from an old data cassette as well as an XDR toneburst. I ended up using those sampler instruments to flesh out a bit of music I'd already been working on, and the end result sounds like a discarded and poorly weathered cassette of some old video game music.

https://soundcloud.com/danwarren/spaghetti-code

Yeah those sounds are really interesting and is a chill melody. What is a data cassette exactly? Is it sampled from other music, or things that are recorded into it? (not that it makes a difference to me)

It's actually a cassette tape that data was recorded onto. Back in the days of the very first home computers many of them used cassette tapes for data storage. If you actually listened to the audio of one it sounded a lot like an old modem when they first connected. For example:

Ahh of course. So you sampled the audible output of the data to make notes. Neat!

I’ve been listening with headphones. Fully stereo. I love chilling to this. Envelopes me in a different kind of environment. What do you use to make it, if you don’t mind sharing?

Reason and a midi controller mainly, I just got a sweet KORG Wavestate recently that should add a lot to my stuff.

Oh yes, you are going to have a lot of fun with that. Korg has been nothing but good to me. Even their tiny volcas are such quality instruments. I have the Korg monologue, which has been a lot of fun too.

I dig it, the best music always sounds like its barely contained and is about to devolve into pure chaos at any moment.

Thanks! I like to work with chance experimenting with mutating things, so things often get chaotic.

Just uploaded a new one - "Up for Air"

https://soundcloud.com/ctenophore/up-for-air

It's about welcoming back the surroundings I've grown all too familiar with, but then remembering the sparkling rocks I see under water - which is like recalling forgotten treasures that I forget about, as rare as they seem to come around.

Finally posted another track. I've been stuck for a while. This one is more like a repetitive meditation, and not melody-driven.

someone help me describe this song, it's definitely one of my favorite things I've ever made but I have absolutely no idea how to classify it. I feel like it belongs in like a racing video game or something?? Maybe kind of a future bass influence? I'm truly at a loss :smith:

Really love this, coming from the likes of Hudson Mohawke and Rustie, but still stands on its own. Is it uploaded differently? Can't seem to find the Like button.

I made another song. Yet again one that I've been working on here and there. Spent a whole lot of time working on the balance of it since there's quite a bit going on for a lot of it. Pretty happy with how it turned out even if it isn't perfect. What is anyway?

This is amazing work. Can't believe how fast symphonic instrument plugins have come. Do you make soundtracks?

Edit: on listening further I hate LARGE sections of this. That first screeching…sample…thing isn’t well used at all, and is basically pandering towards the latter of half the track. No complaints about the closed hi-hat track, the bassline, or that cool cyclical synth thing in the background., though.

It reminds me of what I used to make with a sampler and a few machines more than a few decades ago. Is that a TR-707 sample? Keep it just the way it is. I love this stuff. I’ve come back to the experimental process, and letting everything happen as I’m making it, instead of being calculative, because it’s so tedious and not fun to me.

I think if I made a collection of these, this would be the first one. It starts off like a like a psychotic, oscillator ho down. A little intolerable, especially if you're suddenly awoken by it at 3am. Can you figure out why it's called "Nine Supernovæ"?

Ends abruptly cause I got sick of working on it.

Some thoughts in spoilers:

The skeleton seems alright, might need a bit of reviewing. The voices clash a bit, ideally they’d be more varied and live in their own harmonic space (or something). As is, it feels a bit muddy.

In retrospect, I would probably not introduce the raw-sounding wave loop while the lead guitar and the shimmery pad thing are still going. Give it a couple bars on its own so that the listener gets used to it without juggling the other parts. Too much at once otherwise.

My big-picture skills are still crap. I don’t quite get how to arrange or develop ideas over time. There’s no rhyme or reason to what I put down, it just ends up being whatever kinda sounded good in context. Maybe professional music producers have a plan going in.

edit: Slightly updated version: https://on.soundcloud.com/kqRuh

I like it the way it is right now. You might hate me saying this, but it reminds me of an arcade game, late 80’s/early 90’s. People say the same thing about my music, even though I barely see that and isn’t intended.

I think maybe you could try some crazy effects, but that aren’t constant. Also somehow making it sound like it’s coming out of speakers. It’s also fine the way it is too. Just some ideas.

I posted this on Spotify and stuff way too early before I realized lots of this song's tracks were mono. I did a quick improvement, and posted it here on Soundcloud. It's called "Erstwhile Riescave", where I tried to capture reoccurring nostalgia of my early days in Boston, frequenting crowded apartment gatherings, but those days have passed.

Thanks so much! I'm not sure which part you're talking about, but the main sample that comes in at the beginning is a wind chime. There are some other fun samples, like a time stretched machine from an antique store, though honestly I recorded it so long that I don't remember exactly what it is! It's the part that kinda sounds like a typewriter. Also some guitar samples recorded in a friend's studio.

Thanks for listening!

Ah that’s what it was, yes the wind chime! Sampling stuff is fun, and so redeeming when it sounds nice. I recorded someone’s staple gun from far away, amplified the heck out of it, and got some great drum sounds.
