The bad news: root of molar is infected, requiring a root canal, and had to endure the horrific, constant pain all weekend. Good news: had it taken care of today! And it's at a new root canal dentist like 3 minutes away in a nice little house I didn't know of, with amazing folks working there. And the best part: DOGS! They have two elderly adopted shihtzus, and the ten year old with literally two teeth (she was found with most of her teeth rotting and had to have all but two removed) chilled out on my lap and stomach for most of the procedure, occasionally playing with my hands and being adorable. At first I was like "this is allowed, isn't it unsanitary?" But she's a good smart dog and knows to stay at your stomach/leg area, and they keep her brushed and cleaned. The office is spotless too. Having a little doggy there was really calming. She also walked along with me down the hallway on her hind legs, she's apparently really good at that, it was adorable.

The tooth leaked pus from the infection on the inside, so they left the tooth open until tomorrow so it can drain out. Gross, but necessary.

I've been having a considerably lovely couple of weeks(lots of storm damage + power/heat outage for 3 days, dog got super sick, stepdad very likely has renal cell carcinoma in both his kidneys), so I've been spending a lot of time with Stellaris, a game that a friend gifted to me a while back but I never tried. I've never really played a game like that, a "4X" game, and it's really soothing and relaxing just putzing around the galaxy making friends/enemies as I slowly expand my empire. Currently buddies with a group of tree-lookin' alien motherfuckers and these cool snail aliens. Snailiens(supersonic shell fighters)

Also someone in the Transformer thread just pointed out to me that they're remaking the Figma Samus Aran, and Samus's Power Suit has been my favorite video game character design ever, so I'm super excited for that. It's a figure of the old bulky Varia Suit style, rather than the crappy streamlined version that Other M introduced.

as opposed to this, which is not great

I buy and sell a ton of legos, transformers, etc and keep some for myself, sure, but there's rarely an action figure I have a draw for like the classic Varia Suit Samus figma that's coming out. I think the last time I had that urge was Masterpiece Megatron.

Waking up to find out just how savagely republicans got thrashed in Virginia has made my whole week awesome. Finally some evidence of a Blue Wave that some of my coworkers have been cynically Nothing Matters-ing that it will not happen and the GOP/Trump will reign supreme forever. Hopefully this continues into 2018 midterms. Also that the dude who created the anti-trans Bathroom Bill was defeated by a trans woman, which is just the most beautiful, delicious irony.

The schadenfreude emanating from this tweet is bordering on lethal doses. Good god, it feels so good to see Gillespie lose so apocalyptically, and then the equivalent of a sad, flaccid party horn going off on his twitter account since he changed his birthday on there to be on election day so the balloons would show up celebrating his win. Almost as good as when Mitt Romney's fireworks display went off in Boston despite him losing in 2012

Update on this: stepdad had multiple dark spots on both kidneys as well as inflamed lymph nodes indicating likely renal cell carcenoma + metastasization which would likely be a long, painful death sentence for him.

He had a biopsy done a couple days ago to remove the spots on one of the kidneys. Not only were they non-cancerous and smaller than indicated on the scan, but the lymph nodes were benign, and the other kidney is likely fine as well. Plus, the dark spots weren't "in" the kidney, so the surgeon was able to basically scrape them off the outside of the kidney, meaning he didn't have to open the kidney itself, which would have CONSIDERABLY lengthened recovery time and potential damage to the kidney itself. There was an 85% chance of it being cancer, and he happened to be in the 15% not cancer.

It is literally the best possible outcome. In fact, he was only in the hospital for two days, he's already out and home. poo poo's fantastic. Nothing quite like a cancer scare to make you appreciate what you've got in life!

My washer straight up broke! But that's okay, because it broke during its literal last wash as we were having a new washer/dryer/oven/dishwasher/microwave/freezer installed two days later, and now everything is installed and yay!!!

And the disposal guys who took the replaced old crap accepted an old 55" plasma tv and 60 bucks as payment, and also took an old treadmill, air conditioner, freezer, and the old tv itself for free! My little sister's birthday was a few days ago. I've rarely been in her room since she was murdered ten years ago, it's mostly used for storage anymore, though a lot of her effects are still in there. I went in there for a bit and dug around and found something I had forgotten about : The House She Built. For a project her class was asked to fully design and build a model of their dream house if they were to build one, so she made a two-story floor plan largely out of cardboard with build dimension detailing written into the paper of each floor. It's quite dusty and has some cobwebs and spiders in it and a mouse went into it at some point, but it's still intact. If I were to win the lottery or come into some significant money, I would make her dream a reality, my land is a large enough space to demolish my old house and build this one in its place, if I could. She wanted to build a big house for her and her family or friends to also live in with her. Apologies that it's messy. This is The House She Built.

My house has been slowly deteriorating over the years and badly needed fixing up all over. I've been struggling to keep things going with my mom's poor health and lack of job and the associated terrible costs of healthcare with that, mortgage, various debts due to some awful poo poo that happened many years ago, etc. My dad suddenly decided that since he's got a lot of money socked away for retirement, he could afford to pull a bit out to help pay off some of my/mom's debts, medical bills, and repair the house a bit. So he asked us to find some folks to fix up the roof and do everything they thought needed doing and to have them send the bill his way (about 15k worth of work), and they completely replaced the roof and soffits and all associated stuff as well as destroying the obsolete chimney(the house is 150 years old) and removing all the skylights which, with new england's weather, cause serious leakage and damage to the interior over time. We had a squad of 9 dudes all working at once who got it all done in only two days, and I managed to grab a few pieces of roof shingles to keep as mementos of just how bad things had gotten as they were from when we first moved here nearly 3 decades ago.

I won't post pictures of my house because of course not, but here are the three shingles I saved to give an idea. In particular check out the HUGE lichen on the bottom right piece, lichen grows insanely slowly so that sucker's been at it for a while. Unfortunately the guys tore part of it off when they were removing the shingles but yeah, these shingles were real bad. Keep in mind the black parts are what it generally is supposed to look like. Also that moss/lichen on a roof is really not good.

Also when they tore off the soffits, they were full of bird, mice and squirrel skeletons that had gotten into the attic and couldn't get out over the last century, since the soffits were positively ancient and the nooks where the skeletons were in were a spot humans couldnt fit into. The carpenters weren't thrilled to find that. :v:

But it's all fixed and properly set up for the next couple decades, hurrah! No more drafts or anything now, woo!!!

My mom has been worrying about her health for a long time and also about social security because due to her job she had for a long time, she didn't qualify for very good SS benefits compared to what she's going to need until she qualifies for medicare in a few years, but needs to get some sort of income and taking disability would have completely jacked her social security benefits for life. But she went to discuss it with an agent at their office and discovered she is eligible for an elevated amount due to her former marriage with my dad being long enough that it combines a portion of his with hers(without reducing what he gets himself), which makes the amount nearly one and a half times what she would get if she only applied for her own right now. If she waits another month it increases by a further 5% a month, too, so when she does that she should not have to constantly be panicking about making ends meet like she's been for many months ever since she lost her job. She's pretty ecstatic, and so am I. She might even be able to save a little bit of money now to fix stuff that needs it.

My friend and I have been pretty much on the outs for the past year or so. Now in years past, I had a similar falling out with a different friend, and after a few years she reached out to me, but didn't want friendship so much as she wanted a stooge and an emotional support dog. I figured this out pretty late and felt dumb afterward.

But this time, with this friend, she reached out to me today and wants to be friends again, despite the fact she's the one who ended the friendship, but admitted that she lost her job, her baby is due in a few months, and she wants company and someone to talk to. And telling her no, instead of falling back into that same trap because I was so happy the person was back and ignoring the reasons we stopped being friends, was so goddamn good.

Actually standing my ground and telling her no, things are fine here, and you would know that if you hadn't kept flaking on me, or that your WoW raids were more important than anything we did, but they were, and after over a YEAR of no contact you want to be friends again?
yeah, making that decision to say that defining "gently caress no" to friends/ex-friends is a big, painful one. Most recent one for me was with a dude I worked with for years and talked to about lots of personal stuff, and generally thought he was a fairly smart guy. Trump comes along, he goes full blown magachud. I continued talking to him a few times, we would often talk politics but he got rapidly radicalized and became utterly obstinate about everything, angrily so. He came just short of pizzagate bullshit before I decided to sever entirely and is 110% for a wall, despite marrying a mexican immigrant and having a child with her, and would clam up as typical with racists when called on this hypocrisy. Eventually I was just like "I can't talk to you anymore, my dude. I find your ideology completely repulsive, and so long as you continue to believe that poo poo, I don't want anything to do with you." and have not spoken to him since. He still tries to say hi but I just don't acknowledge his presence. He wears a TRUMP beanie to work now and rants in his work area about various trumpisms which makes this nice brazilian lady that also works in his area supremely uncomfortable. A few others showed their true colors these last few years with trump and I just severed entirely with them as well. I know it can't really be possible with some folks especially if those provide financial support or other essential resources but if it's doable, I highly recommend expunging folks who are actively toxic to your wellbeing from your life(for whatever reason, not just political ideology). Even had a similar experience with an ex-friend who showed up and acted like we didn't have a super messy falling out and I wasn't having any of it. If they're not even going to acknowledge the cause of whatever made you break apart in the first place, they're not worth dealing with or even attempt to make amends with.

Had yet another altercation at work with my lovely, useless coworker who has the literal best job in the company(breaking package jams to keep the flow of boxes going into the trucks at UPS, and that's all he does) and gets paid absurd amounts to do it, but would rather look at his phone than go to where he is needed, and will literally look at you so you know he heard you, before going back to his phone (if not shouting expletives at you first).

This is, verbatim, how the incident went, I am not cutting out any part of it or changing what was said:

Me: "(guy), can you please go break jams for Waterbury?"

(Guy): *crosses arms, smirks* "here's an idea, how about you go gently caress yourself?"

I then said some things about how he really takes for granted what an incredible position he has and walked off. I then went to the union steward and reported him for harassment, being useless, etc, and the steward has suggested he be moved to a position where he can't just sit and watch porn(no, seriously) on his phone all the time. Like doing tape-ups, where he wouldn't be able to be on his phone at all.

With any luck, we will have a replacement for him who actually gives a gently caress soon. This is not "lazy entitled worker" griping, this is a dude who knows how good he has it, specifically, and thinks he's invincible so he says whatever he wants to people. The first two words out of his mouth to me, before I ever knew his name, were "gently caress you", and yeah, no thanks, I'm not dealing with this creepy weirdo yelling obscenities at me while I'm working my rear end off. So hopefully he gets hosed out of his golden goose position. People have been largely apathetic with dealing with him because he's such a shithead , but gently caress that mentality and gently caress utterly utterly toxic, spiteful shits like him for making incredibly hostile work environments for absolutely no reason

Edit: this is awesome because my bosses and union reps all agree his attitude can get hosed, and all my coworkers have my back on this, it would be absolutely awful if everyone was like "yeah that's just how he is" rather than "no, gently caress that guy"

A few days ago, but I went to see alita: battle angel this past weekend and it was everything I hoped it could be. Not only have I been waiting literally two decades for it ever since James Cameron bought the rights to it, but I've dreaded it actually being made because battle angel alita is one of my favorite fiction series of all time and really, there has never been a good live action adaptation of an anime/manga ever, especially western adaptations. Like, remember Dragon Ball Evolution where they remade it into a lovely teen movie where goku was some dipshit in high school and it was a travesty of film almost but not quite on the level of The Last Airbender? That's what I dreaded for this, but it was a joy to see, I am so loving happy it turned out this way. I just hope it's successful enough that the other two parts get made.

Also, for my day, I went to check on my hamster, screamer, who earlier was running in lopsided circles in her cage, tumbling over as she hit each "corner", couldn't stand up straight, etc. I went to bed since, well, she's getting to that age where hamsters tend to just not wake up again. I figured she had had a stroke and lost control of her left side. I figured I would sleep and if she still exhibited those symptoms when I woke up, I would take her to the vet and probably put her down.

Well I woke up for work and she came out of her nest to greet me, yawning and stretching like nothing was wrong, standing on her hind legs and doing that stretchy wiggly sniffing thing rodents do when they stand up. So I'm glad I get to spend more time with her, she's a good girl.

edit: no, nevermind, she died. Weirdest loving way, too. I guess whatever happened yesterday was too much for her small, aging body. :smith:

the last three days have been absolutely loving packed with stuff.

saturday, I helped out at a local church's biannual rummage sale, and also picked up a few things, including a basket full of random silverware that had a berry spoon from 1787(the tarnished lumpy spoon in the bottom middle) and a few misc pieces from the mid-late 1800's, about 8 other pieces totaling ~10ish ounces of sterling silver(scrapped would be about $150 right now), as well as a rad soviet hat covered in soviet enameled pins and a bunch of other less awesome stuff

then mom and I took about ~100 pounds of misc clothing out to the west of the state from the rummage sale when they finished and gave it to my aunt and uncle who spread them around to the folks in the community who need it, and picked up a free treadmill while we were out there, which mom sorely needs. About a ~7 hour round trip car ride and I got to see the town my grandma lived in when she was still alive, it's been 15 years and it's changed so, so much, it's unreal

Then I went to see Detective Pikachu yesterday with my dad who for some reason also wanted to see it, it was great fun, and dad was utterly bewildered by it

today's been almost entirely cleaning and sorting, and I've gotten rid of like 50 pounds of cardboard boxes and an old TV cabinet I was using for storage use but ultimately don't need. Cleaning with visible progress always feels great. And my new hamster is sleeping in my shirt, which is a good sign that she's becoming more comfortable with me. Very productive few days! Afterwards I went to pick up my car which I had asked for like 8 things to get checked, while I need to get a custom part for the exhaust made because they don't manufacture it anymore, the rest of the work cost a grand total of 23 dollars for labor and 1 dollar for parts. I also need to get work done on my car, but your post has made me terrified to do it, since you're obviously my bearded Spock.
I'm welcoming my easy to access veins right now because I know rolling veins run in my family super hard, when my mom was in the hospital for sepsis it took them 20 minutes and 4 nurses to get an IV in her arm, she had like 15 punctures before they got one to stick. It's bad, and I wonder when/if that'll happen to me. As for the car, well, the two main things that would've been costly, the exhaust and the side door of my van literally falling off the rail so it looked like the ninja turtles party wagon flip-out door, he didn't do. I'll probably just ask him to weld the door shut and remove the handle since I never use that one anyways, but yeah, that stuff is going to be costly.

Also, over the course of the last week while on vacation, I cleaned up two full to the ceiling storage rooms(one for store stock, one for shipping supplies) and condensed it all down, the stock room switching to uniform storage boxes rather than whatever I had handy to hold things in resulting in the room going from nearly 100% full to half full. The other room, breaking down and organizing boxes and cramming bubblewrap/airbags into condensed boxes, and now it's only about 60% full instead of 100%, with easy access to anything I need. I'd been letting it get way out of hand for years and finally decided to knuckle down and get it all sorted. I'm glad the weather has been wonderful this week, would have hated to do this during the summer. The key to getting it all done was not trying to marathon it, doing 1-3 hours at a time, and also not having power for 8 hours thursday gave me a lot of time to work on it. :v:

A bit of bad, a bit of good.

My aunt found out she had breast cancer and also had multiple inflamed lymph nodes. Worrying that it had spread, she of course elected for immediate surgery to deal with them and test things. The results came back and they "captured" the cancer before it spread, there were no traces of cancer in the lymph nodes, just the tumor. She's going in for a second round to clean up some questionable tissue in the location where the tumor was just to be safe, and will be in therapy for a bit, but this is pretty much the best case scenario I think. She's 73, so hopefully she'll be able to live out the rest of her life without having to worry about it again.

I was with my sister and we were fighting off horrific nightmare creatures with big fat super soaker or xcom-style exaggeratedly huge laser rifles, they'd fire off a big shot but then need to recharge for five seconds, so if we missed we had to wait for the next shot. We were cracking off shots around the corner of a stairwell we were hiding in and took out a serpentine wingless dragon-looking thing, and over its corpse scuttled an abomination straight out of a metal album cover: a car-sized creature with eight thick, spider-like legs, maybe crab-like, connected to a human skull that was at a 45-degree angle upwards, with its jaw hanging slackly open, the rear of its head taken up by a far-too-massive pulsating brain(I guess in place of a spider abdomen), and huge, faintly glowing human eyeballs that stared blankly into space with + shaped pupils instead of normal pupils bulged out of the skull's eye sockets. And the entire thing was a meaty red-pink color, and...moist. moist and meaty. And we were cracking off shots at it and it just kept scuttling forwards and dodging them like nothing, I shouted we should back down the stairs before it got to us. We got to the bottom of the stairs before a shadow filled the doorway, talons reach in either side, and the face of the thing filling the entire doorway is illuminated by the glow of its + -shaped pupil eyeballs...and then my alarm went off and I woke up for work

Pretty cool horrifying dream imo

the mad lad Sakurai actually put Sans from motherfucking Undertale in Smash Ultimate.

It's a Mii Gunner outfit, but I figure Sans was too lazy to show up himself so he had someone else dress up in crocs, a hoodie and a skull head and go as him instead

and toby fox made a new rendition of Megalovania, which is included in the DLC, and it's really, really good

but god drat, I didn't think it'd ever happen, in any form. And now you can have Megalovania as your stage music. What a weird game.

so this happened last week

Captain Invictus posted:

So, I came to the dental surgeon with my mom for them to check out an abnormality on her gums. She sits in the chair, he tells her to say ahh, and is just like "well, that's mouth cancer". Carcinoma or something. gently caress. gently caress!

I hate everything.

Edit: they still have to do a biopsy and all that. But he was just like "in 20 years of doing this, that's what that looks like, and everything else similar is also not great, siphilis, tuberculosis, etc", so, gently caress. It could also be an infection, but it's not real likely, this is two separate professionals suggesting it's cancer. Very treatable cancer, apparently, but any cancer is bad.
and we just got a phone call, all the tests were negative. the doctor was wrong. it's not cancer. it's precancerous and infected(which was causing the growth to look especially funky), they still need to remove the growth, but it has not yet crossed that threshold to "full blown cancer". this also means they just remove the growth, and not a centimeter of surrounding tissue and jawbone, which is also excellent.

Yeah. Still needs surgery, but...well, it's not cancer, and that's all that matters.

I finally put my foot down and said I wouldn't be working 10+ hours a day at work anymore, that I'd be coming in at a more reasonable time since I have other obligations outside of work and that place isn't my whole life. My boss was cool with it, and all is well.

Working through the process of refinancing and merging the mortgage and equity line of credit(long, hosed up story from the past caused that situation) into a single payment, and might be able to get nearly 700 bucks a month less on the payments as well as a further 1% reduction on the interest rate. Suffice to say, I'm pretty loving stoked since that's basically a paycheck a month that I'll be "recovering" once it goes through. Only thing is an appraiser has to come and take photos of every room in the house I guess, and not really comfortable/looking forward to that, but whatever.

That combined with mom finally about to qualify for medicare, and if it's what I think it will be, the highest form of it that she'll be definitely getting will be about ~200 a month. versus the nearly 1200 a month it currently is for coverage + meds.

And in another ~2 years, I'll jump up from 20 an hour to 33 an hour, so I'll be in excellent shape financially. Looking forward to it. Sucks right now, but now that I've sat down and set up a situation with my boss where I come in at a set minimum time every day rather than whenever the building manager decides the start time is, I'm no longer working 10-12 hours a day average, now down to about ~9-9.5 a day. That extra half hour to 45 minutes I get each day has really helped a shitload in providing a bit of extra time to get things done each day, or get a little extra sleep before having to go back into work, and my mood and rest state has improved dramatically the last couple weeks because of it. Since once I hit about 700 bucks a week I reach some tax threshold that starts vacuuming up money from any overtime I get, it's not even that big an issue that I'm getting less overtime since I was getting about 12 bucks take home pay from each hour of OT.

basically, in the next eight months, my household will be net positive for the first time in decades. And in two years, I'll be able to sock away quite a bit of money each month or put it towards long-awaited projects and fixes. I'm pretty fuckin' excited.
