I think we need to have a thread where we post short films and tear each other down so we never post anything else ever again and this thread quickly dies. Sound like fun? I'll start then. Here's a short film I shot a year or so ago that I have permission to post from the director. http://www.vimeo.com/13319272 Film starts after the color bars. It's about 37 minutes long. The title is Chinese Winter and was shot in Seoul, Korea and is about the troubles that foreigners from different countries have when living here. We had a cast from six different countries and four different languages, so dialogue was a bit of a collaborative approach. I think the script needed a bit more tightening, but it wasn't mine to fiddle with. I did the DPing and the editing, so any comments on those aspects would be appreciated. Being a cheap/no budget production, lights were mostly not used except in interiors, and even then, we used reflectors more often than not. It was shot on the DVX100, so it's not HD, but it looks all right, apart from the lighting issues. Editing took a long while, but I think I have it whittled down pretty well. Some bits I'd like to see reshot, but the time has come to move on. Anyway, enough of my petty excuses for my crappy film. Post some of yours! Don't be shy! After finally getting my hands on a video capable dSLR I've started putting together climbing videos. I'm dealing with the steep learning curve of Premiere and AE, as well as learning what the different frame-rates and resolutions look and feel like. An on-board mic isn't enough. Bad sound ruins a good film. Even if you have to pay, get a good sound recorder. Also seems to be lit naturally, which works for outdoors but not indoors. You don't have to go crazy, but some fill light would help. Careful with the "shaky camera" and zooms - there is a fine line between a natural feel and pulling us out of the film.

You could have gotten this down to five minutes and still conveyed the same information and sentiment.

I made two hilariously bad westerns with a friend a few years ago. This was during a time when the most I knew about filmmaking was "red button turns the camera on." The only time I notice zooms while shooting is on comedies like The Office where they whip zoom into a face for a comedic reaction shot. When you've got two characters in a scene and one moves out of frame, zooming out to keep them both in frame just makes it look like a home video. At around 1:40 you have the camera in closeup on the father, then you zoom back to kind of get him and the son who is in the car. And just to go a bit further, your music is very melancholy but also dreamy and floaty. I think the handheld shakicam works against that.

Alright, I'll play your game you rogues. First up is my entry into my local 48 Hour Film festival. We won best film and the audience choice award, no big deal. Sound is poo poo and I'd do a lot different now but it is what it is and I don't hate it. Directed/shot and edited by me. Here is a fabulously mostly-finished (editing-wise) short film I wrote and co-directed just a couple weeks ago: Inappropriate Mastication 5:34, shot on a Canon T2i It's still in a sort of semi-rough state for no real good reason other than our editor doesn't think it needs any more work (ah, assigned groups). I'm kind of proud of the dolly shots, I spent a good deal of time and money building it.

I think you could have done the entire thing with no dialogue, if you just changed the ending a little bit. It looked like you had some exposure issues in the first shot of the school building, along with the oh so fun moire we get when we film large brick walls. How long did it take you to shoot the poolside scenes? It pretty noticeably went from day to night between shots. What was your audio setup?

Yeah, I kinda wish we had done no dialogue whatsoever. The poolside stuff took almost an hour and a half because our lead (Pete) was plastered, and so we caught the sun going down. I can't believe how well it picked up the lights at night, though, all that's from the in-pool bulbs and the neighboring tennis court. The audio setup was a boom mike from the school, I'm actually not sure what the make was. And yeah, lots of exposure issues, mostly when we tried to use a zoom lens in the library.

This is a short film I made last spring as part 7 in a collection of short zombie films. I know some of the color is still a little inconsistent and the sound mix could be tighter, but I'm pretty pleased with how it turned out, especially seeing as how we shot the entire thing in one day. 7. Yesterday I stood in front 30 of my peers and made my final presentation for my Teaching Training. The topic - What happens when you put ice in a microwave? A question that came up a few weeks ago when one of my classmates was dicussing materials that change when we heat them up. We were told as a final task for science would be to make a science video that answers this question. The rules were simple, make it engaging and simple. This wasnt marked, it wasnt even considered evidence for any standards so I thought " hey lets go nuts with it", chuck in a keyboard cat, have a better barritone than my croaky british voice which I had just lost. It was going to be our last session so why not do something memorible. I enlisted the help of Stinkmeister (who like a twinkie, I forgot to credit in the video but who has since become a campus urban legend as everybody wants to know who he is) to do some great voice overs highlighting the awesomeness of ice. The presentation went down a storm, we had cheers and merriment a plenty. The science department want it on DVD for next years students and I just got ordered to put it on Ytube for my head of programme to see. Needless to say it was the perfect end to the course.
