Hey cool! I've separated the episodes by genre and game system so you can just browse your favorites and ignore the others. A lot of people dug this CoC one http://actualplay.roleplayingpublicradio.com/2011/02/systems/call-of-cthulhu/call-of-cthulhu-bryson-springs/

I know this won't apply to everyone but I've made some money for Role Playing Public Radio by doing ransom projects. I wrote a blog post about the first one I did in 2009. http://www.slangdesign.com/2009/06/blog/the-story-behind-the-new-world-primer/

In our case, a lot of contributions were made so the hardcore listeners could get early access to our Actual Play podcast episodes. This is our kickstarter for the latest project we did: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/rosspayton/ruins-of-lemuria-a-new-world-dandd-campaign-source

We're about ready to release the PDF for the Ruins of Lemuria. It's about 17,000 words and fully illustrated and it will be free when it's released so everyone wins.

Anyway, a kickstarter with some kind of ransom project as a reward might be a way to get paid for podcasting.

I'm curious what you folks think about show length. My podcast has ended up twice as long as usual for our past two episodes, and I'm wondering if it would be better to split it into two parts and release them a week apart? We're only a monthly show and I think not being weekly has cost us listeners on a few occasions. We've also talked about doing mini-episodes to fill the weeks we're off, but does anyone actually listen to five or ten minute bonus shows?

I've done podcast episodes ranging in length from a few minutes to six hours long and I've found at least in my case that fans prefer the longer ones. A lot of my listeners have long commutes or jobs and like having enough material to get them through the day.

Asking listeners can be a mixed bag because you'll often get mixed feedback. In my case, I asked about posting frequency and I had some listeners that will listen to a six hour episode the day I release it and others that take a week to get through a 2 hour podcast or fall back regardless.

The listeners that give you feedback may not be an accurate representative of the listener base as a whole.

Just a general question for all the other podcasters: What services/podcast directories do you sign up with/register?

Obviously, iTunes is pretty much obligatory for podcasts, but I recently learned about Stitcher and applied for that. I'm also on rpgpodcasts.com and a few other podcast directories that I forgot about. I think I submitted RPPR to the Zune marketplace a few years ago but that's a non-issue now.

Another question. Maybe someone who uses Blip can answer this for me, or who is more knowledgeable about iTunes.

Blip automatically sends your videos for iTunes distribution (we're an audio show, but we have a graphic in the background, so we're sort of a video). According to my viewership data, at least one person has watched an episode through iTunes. Yet, I've searched for the podcast in iTunes on several occasions and never seen it. What gives? Am I putting in the search values wrong?

Edit: Aha. People were somehow finding it via an automatic RS feed on bip's site, and I had to go in and personally set myself up for being view-able on iTunes' podcast stuff.

how do you do create the video version of your podcast? I'm thinking of uploading my podcast archives to Youtube but I don't know an easy way to add a still image to an audio file and make a video out of that - Final Cut Pro would take hours to render a video.

Is anyone having problems with their podcast episode listing updating on time in iTunes? I have 2 podcasts, Role Playing Public Radio and RPPR Actual Play. The latest episodes for both shows aren't showing up in the iTunes store, although people that manually update their subscriptions get them.

which tells me that the response of your web service is not in XML format.

We kindly recommend contacting you host server to have them take a look at and secure your feeds."

I then emailed a RPG Podcaster email group I'm on and I got this back:

"believe the reference to 'curl the feed' was the use of a command line HTTP client, cURL. It's a quick way to get the contents from an HTTP served resource, or just check the headers to make sure the HTTP server is working and the resource is available.

The following command works, but your server is serving the feed in a compressed format. So, to get it with cURL uncompressed, try the second form.

1) curl -#O http://actualplay.roleplayingpublicradio.com/feed/podcast
2) curl -#O --compressed http://actualplay.roleplayingpublicradio.com/feed/podcast

[Note the absence of the trailing backslash? That's necessary in this case.]"

I asked how to compress the feed and I got this answer:

"It depends on the type of web server and your level of access. If it's a shared server that only the web provider can administer, then you need to contact them for support.

That may not work for you, because your feed is generated dynamically. If you have an Apache web server, then you (or your provider) can put an ".htaccess" file in your primary directory that includes server directives, including a directive to NOT compress (or 'DEFLATE' as their documentation points out) files that end in "*.xml" or "*.rss" (as per this article on RSS). If that's done, then Apache would know not to compress that content but serve it uncompressed, which would allow it to include the content-length.

If your server is something else, like Microsoft's IIS, then the procedure is different but the effect is the same. Unfortunately, I'm no expert on Apache configuration directives but based on this documentation I believe you'd need something like this in your ".htaccess" file in your www/ directory:

RemoveOutputFilter xml rss"

I am not an expert webmaster. I use bluehost.com for hosting. I've opened a ticket with them but this is getting beyond me.

Help?

Pious Pete posted:

Yeah, I've been having similar issues. Even after my RSS updates it's been taking about half a day for iTunes to recognize and list new episodes recently. As long as your RSS is updating though people should get new episodes (iTunes redirects to your RSS feed, no actual hosting. They just allow ratings/ease of presentation). Maybe it's just a high traffic time of year? Have new episodes shown up EVENTUALLY or not at all?

On a similar note, I have my own RSS problem.

When I first started my show (about half a year ago?) I went with using tumblr as an RSS front and feedburner for the podcast. The problem is, I didn't realize tumblr had a 20-item limit on their RSS feeds. That means only our 20 most recent episodes appear in iTunes at a time, with the oldest getting bumped off every time we put out a new episode.

Now, nearly 30 episodes in I've started to get complaints from new listeners about older episodes not appearing in iTunes. I've been redirecting them to the actual mp3 links on tumlbr, but now that I actually have time to address the problem, I'd like to fix it.

Does anyone know a way transfer from one rss host to another without completely losing episode ratings, etc? We have separate hosting for the files, we just need a new rss front. The best lead I've had so far is the Import Tumblr Posts option on wordpress, but I'm not sure if there's any easier way or if I'll wind up losing anything.

Here are links to the iTunes listing, feedburner, and tumblr host.

http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/ninjas-vs.-podcast/id473562353
http://feeds.feedburner.com/nvppodcast
http://nvppodcast.tumblr.com/

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Just an update: I found out how to fix it - I was using a wordpress plugin called super cache and it compressed every page. I unchecked that option and the feed worked again. It's weird though because I've had that plugin for a long time and it's only in the last two weeks that iTunes decided it had a problem with it.

There's a Wordpress thread here: http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3161913 ask them about it.

Wow, great that this thread exists. I'm looking for software recommendations.

I've run a show/podcast through my University's "radio station" (used in the loosest sense of the word). I've really loved doing it and thought to spin it out to do it independently once I finish my masters.

In the studio I used Adobe Audition to record voice, add tracks, mix them together and normalize/fade etc. That was on a PC.

I know I could get the Adobe package for the Mac which I have at home but that is insane $$ for what is essentially going to be a hobby (I harbor no illusions of grandeur). What could I use that would do the same sorts of things? Essentially a few tracks, crossfade, normalization in the software, mixdown into mp3. Inputs from microphone as well as other sources. Nothing fancy, right?

If you use a Mac, what's wrong with Garageband? I use it for my podcast.

I just checked my podcast's ratings and reviews on iTunes and came across a negative review that got my head scratching. I've attached it below. My podcast is here: http://www.slangdesign.com/rppr

Can someone verify if this guy is right or not? I don't consciously pan either voice on the podcast and I use Levelator on all episodes to balance the levels out.

I know our earlier episodes and the skype interviews are probably all hosed up from a technical standpoint but I would think by episode 86, I had gotten the basics down.

Either way, I only listen to the podcast via headphones and the only noted issue I've personally experienced is the levels changing when someone is far from the mic and they fade out/in.

Upon further reflection, he might be referring to a Skype interview with Scott Glancy. It was mixed terribly because it was Skype and I wasn't paying attention and Scott can ramble on and make funny voices.

Is anyone getting weird errors or slow updates in regards to the iTunes podcast app? Several listeners of RPPR Actual Play have reported stuff like:

"Is anyone else having issues with the iTunes Podcasts app and RPPR Actual Plays. The app isn't updating automatically anymore for RPPR Actual Plays. When I go and manually add the newest podcast from the store and it has the right date on it, but it goes to the bottom of the list. It's weird though, it just started doing this with one of the Nights Black Agents episodes and does it intermittently since. It just did again with the Bayou Beatdown Base Raiders episode. Anyone else having this problem
Or know of a fix. No other podcasts are doing it, and the main RPPR podcast isn't doing it.

Oh yeah one more thing, the episodes have the right date on them in the Podcasts store, but once they are downloaded they have a date of December 31st, 2000 on them.

A listener of my podcast, RPPR Actual Play just noticed that the podcast feed on iTunes was shortened to 30 episodes. I use powerpress (the wordpress podcasting plugin) to manage the podcast and the feed setting is set to 500 episodes, so people can just download anything they want from the archive. If you look at the feed here, it goes all the way to the start of the podcast: http://actualplay.roleplayingpublicradio.com/feed/

Has iTunes shortened feeds or what? Is anyone else experiencing this?

Also, is there a way to give listeners a way to download multiple episodes at once easily in their podcast software? I run campaigns of tabletop RPGs that run multiple sessions, so I don't want people to have to go to the website to download a bunch of episodes at once.

Edit:: seem to have figured it out - it looks like the feed in powerpress was http://actualplay.roleplayingpublicradio.com/feed/ but it should have been http://actualplay.roleplayingpublicradio.com/feed/podcast and I've changed the settings to reflect that. It's working in Beyondpod at least.

I produce about 240 hours of podcast material a year (actual play sessions of tabletop RPGs, plus advice, discussion, etc) and I recently stumbled across this site: https://www.radionomy.com/en/static/produce

It lets you set up a streaming radio station for free and I thought this might be a fun way to let listeners try out our older content and put in some curated music shows and whatnot. Does anyone have any experience with radionomy or could recommend another streaming service?
