After reading this thread and the reciever thread, I've taken my first step into having an actually decent AV system! I've decided to stick to a 3.0 system due to living on the 2nd floor for now.

I'm looking into getting my first real home audio system and I'm pretty much decided on the Onkyo TX-NR609. Will be great to know how it all sounds when it's set up.

Sounds great! I was worried there wouldn't be enough bass, but it's plenty for my small apartment living room. Only downside is that my TV now looks small compared to everything else in the room.

I'm not exactly an audiophile, but I'm glad I'm no longer using the TV speakers.

So I've been rocking an Onkyo TX-NR609 since mid 2011. I came home today, hoping to finish up GTA when I came home to see this.

It looks like the TV has been knocked into a 16 bit color mode or something. OTA television looks fine. Check the cables, same results. Unplugged it from the surge protector and let it sit for a few minutes. Plugged it back in, same result. Is my receiver toast? If so, is there a replacement I should be looking at? This thing was way overkill when I bought it, and is still overkill for my needs (small apartment, left / right / center configuration with no subwoofer).

I was shopping around Newegg and found they have the Pioneer Elite SC-63 for $600. Tempted to pull the trigger, it's only a year old at this point right?

My parents have a pair of Bowers and Wilkins CM8 speakers in order to "keep up with the Joneses." However, they don't have any other audio gear. They would like to have these speakers used double duty: listening to music (mostly classical on CD) and for TV viewing. They have a fairly small living room, where the space between seating and where the speakers would go is about 8 feet. They live in a condo so I don't expect them to blast the poo poo out of these speakers but since they are losing their hearing it isn't outside the realm of possibility.

I'm going to need a receiver that can do the following:
1. Pass RCA video to HDMI (they have a ton of stuff on VHS still).
2. Easily stream music from her Samsung Galaxy phone.
3. Drive the aforementioned speakers.

I might be able to persuade them from spending so much money on speakers but for now let's assume that they won't return them. Budget for the receiver is around $2k. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
