DMPunk posted:I never understood how the New Blood were the heels in WCW. You had young guys wanting a chance to prove themselves and not be held down by the aging, overpaid, overpushed ex WWF guys. What made them heels? The original plan IIRC was that the New Blood was going to be the face group, but since it was Vince Russo writing it they were a much larger group than the Millionaire's Club (So the dastardly heels would always be at a disadvantage), and they came off as whiny douchebags (Not to mention a significant portion of the New Blood were already heels and vice versa for the Millionaire's Club), so they just went with it.

When accounting for scale and the enormity of the opportunity they missed, it probably is one of the biggest blunders in sports business history. It didn't lose billions of dollars, and it didn't kill the company, but it was essentially a license to print money for a few years and they defied all odds to turn it into a failure. I've said it before, but I'll never forget the Wrestling Observer Live from the day of or after the sale went down. The show had a bunch of people fantasy booking the Invasion, and most of them were pretty bad. They were all a million times better than what actually happened.

I think business is at a point where they're in throw poo poo at the wall mode, and one of those is "well just cater to the internet." That's why you're seeing Attitude Era stuff, the Punk angle last year, etc

The point is that anything remotely comparable that the WWF/E did was nowhere near as bad as Hogan/Goldberg because there was some reason to do it. The only thing I can think of that comes close is Austin/Undertaker in 99 that got a gigantic rating, but that's not even really that close because they already got a monster buyrate out of the two already.
