Would anyone know any stoner or doom bands that are keyboard or organ based? I know there's a whole bunch of psychedelic bands, but I'm thinking more of a Sabbath or Sleep sound. Or is it impossible to play doom on an organ without sounding like Iron Butterfly?

big scary monsters posted:Are electric organs allowed? Because Stonehenge might fit the bill if so: https://stonehengedoom.bandcamp.com/album/bunch-of-bisons Yeah, I was thinking of combo organs. I bought myself an Arturia Minilab to dick about on recently and I've been obsessed by the Vox Continental simulation in Analog lab - it has some pretty crunchy noises. I'm thinking that the issue with keyboards and metal is you can't quite get the rhythms a guitar is capable of - you can't really chug. Artic Brother on that album is kinda getting close to what I'm after. hot date tonight! posted:Blood Ceremony is pretty cool, with an organ, flute and excellent female vocals. They seem to be getting less doomy each album though so ymmv There seems to be a bunch of these occult-y psychedelic bands with female vocals at the moment. Not complaining, mind. hatelull posted:Check out Black Mountain. I have heard them described as in the neighborhood of Floyd and Sabbath hooking up for a one night stand. That's a pretty apt description - not the sound I was thinking of, but enjoyed their KEXP performances. The doubled vocals are awesome. big scary monsters posted:I feel like a pipe organ is a pretty doom instrument. If you've ever heard a big one being played by someone who means you'll know it's an impressive amount of noise with an incredible range of timbre. Unfortunately most of them are solidly attached to churches and not so great for touring. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nt1S7IJcC30 Interestingly, the Tocatta and Fugue that the kid is playing there (that's only the Tocatta bit) is pretty much 4 minutes of shredding, followed by 5 minutes exploring a riff - arguably the 17th century equivalent of stoner metal.

(Actual song was Artic Brother by Stonehenge. From Bunch of Bisons. Yeah, shut up.)

I don't particularly care for HoF and have no view on Matt Pike's vocals, but I will say that though he is not an attractive man, there is something strangely alluring about a sweaty, topless Matt Pike playing guitar. Trabant posted:

I have no idea how I found out about Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs - I'll look a little silly if it was from this thread. I've been writing an essay that involves treatment of angina with sublingual GNT, so its a little thematic at the moment. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HkcwgI-l2aw A comment somewhere describes them as Black Flaggath, which is not far off.

HenryJLittlefinger posted:A lot of the cliches of psychedelic/stoner album art are one of my favorite parts of this kind of music, but wizard and weed themed stuff comes across to me as phoning it in now, even with a good artist. Your Weedsconsin cover is awesome because of how drenched in the theme you made it. I don't even really like Bongzilla that much but I listened to the album a couple times because of the cover. Wizard poo poo doesn't really interest me, but a way over the top demon always makes me pay attention. I'm all for space themed album covers, but I feel there's a dearth of food-themed stoner covers. Or even songs, for that matter.

Me asking the thread for recommendations:Laserface posted:Monolord to me are more sludge doom imo. I'd have said that they're more psych/stoner. Not quite my cup of tea though. Again, I think I dislike the bass just copying the guitar, especially when its a three piece and there's heaps of sonic space to play in. Kvlt! posted:my friend you need to listen to some GRIEF Darthemed posted:If none of these do it for you, I think you can write off the genre. Thanks for the recommendations! I remembered why I bounced off a lot of sludge - the vocals tend towards the death growl side of things which rarely does it for me. Oddly, I found I liked the occult-themed bands more - Wizard Cult, Cult of Occult and Shadowmaster. Again, the vocals not my thing, but seemed fitting for the subject matter.

So listening to Dopesmoker on YouTube at half speed is 'working all night' and the 'promising results' appear to be a lovely biro drawing of Donald Duck smoking bongs. Okay, I'm enjoying Bongtower, even if the band name sounds like a parody of a stoner band name. Also, there's a super close up of the guitarist's pedalboard at the start of this video and you see the names for most of them: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D3xJopRKKJM It's a slightly different setup from the Facebook video though, but I think the fuzz and distortions are mostly the same.

I was playing with that at 3am and had to keep checking whether they were real bands or not. I feel like there should be words that let you know before you listen to a SDS band whether you'll like them or not. I feel 'bong', 'witch' and perhaps 'dope' might ones for me. Maybe 'mammoth' too.
