boxcarhobo posted:Hopscotch Music Fest! It's almost hereeeeee! I plan on seeing a bunch of stuff anyway, but there isn't a whole lot of metal bands I'd heard of before. Just Atlas Moth and Valient Thorr, really. Does anyone know of any sweet stoner/sludge/doom that might be showing up to play in Raleigh this weekend? I'm jealous. I would definitely see Pallbearer. These guys might be an acquired taste but Sunn O))) is also playing, You'd probably want to look them up before heading to see them. Also, Black Tusk. I guess Baroness is still playing, they were in a tour bus accident a few weeks ago. That's all I recognize. If it were me I'd probably try to catch The Jesus and Mary Chain too (not metal). I'd be interested to see if more doomier heads than mine can pick out some more bands from the list. Here it is: http://hopscotchmusicfest.com/bands/2012/

Often times I find that I really love bands mentioned in this thread after I have initially passed over for whatever reason. The latest addition to that list is Colour Haze...oh my god. I had no idea. I got hooked after listening "Transformation" from the new album. I've since been making it through their albums Periscope, All and Tempel. I'm really excited for the new album. The warm tones...I just want to snuggle up in there and delicately head bang. I love this thread.

Low Desert Punk posted:A band I don't see mentioned very often would have to be The Kings Of Frog Island. They're an English stoner band, and they released a trilogy of albums before disbanding. They combine really fuzzy, riff-driven stoner rock with delta blues influences and really creepy harmonies. It's an interesting take on the genre, I figured you guys might enjoy it if you've never heard them before. Their second album, II, is usually considered the best but the whole trilogy is pretty great. Thanks for pointing them it out. I'm going through the first album now. I love how their acoustic guitar stuff exists so seamlessly with the rest of the music. "The River" is interesting in that it kind of holds its own among all the heavier songs while being mostly acoustic. Take a walk with me down by the river. A Colour Haze question: Often times in you can hear a tapping sound that usually just sounds like the guitar pick hitting a pickup. I don't know what it actually is though as sometimes it doesn't seem to fit with the guitar rhythm like I would expect. What's that sound? Here's an example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=HJhkYePujR0#t=56s

muike posted:Just sounds like clacky pick attack. It's just the pick hitting the strings, it's accentuated due to how the riff is played, though. Can you explain a little more? I play guitar and I'm old and I don't see how you make sounds like that by just hitting the string with a pick. A pick being held is deadened by your fingers. It seems too loud to be a pick unless the pickup is picking the sound up and it's getting amplified a great deal which I guess could be happening. I just find it odd. It makes sense for it to be the pick but I don't understand how it's happening because picks and strings don't make sounds like that in my experience.

# ¿ Oct 9, 2012 21:40 |

You were totally right. Playing up on the neck with a shallow pick angle makes that sound. Guitar doesn't even need to be amplified. It seems like it depends on whether the string that is getting picked is already vibrating or not. The sound is actually the string slapping against the pick right before the pick sounds the string again. Which explains why it's not present on every note when it is happening. Thanks for explaining that.

Re "getting into this kind of music". In my late teens through my mid 20's I was playing in a band that started out playing punk, moved to grindcore and then ended up as some kind of death metal/black metal/grind mixture. Through that process of growth and discovery I had become familiar bands that slowed things down for a song or two or in parts of songs plus a few bands that did the slow thing full time. Because of my perceived familiarity with the metal genre I feel I developed a blind spot for doom/stoner/sludge. I had been to Weedeater, Buzzoven and Electric Wizard shows not knowing that there was an actual genre encompassing them. This was all before I had regular access to the internet. In my mind death metal was where the heavy poo poo was and even there at least 90% of what's out there is no fun for me. What really got me interested was when I heard Sleep's Dragonaut used in the movie Gummo. Here's the part: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iBevc5qQFYg So that got me to Sleep but I still didn't know this was a genre until I clicked on this thread out of curiosity. Then the scales fell from my eyes. Now I have more bands to listen to/work through than I have time for. Initially Yob, Bongripper, Ufomammut and Ahab really set it off for me. Colour Haze and Asteroid have been doing it for me lately on the lighter side. My only regret is that I didn't know about all this when I was younger and had time to play music. I totally would have been trying to create my own crappy doom flavors. It seems like this is the one genre that has an endless supply of fantastic stuff. I'm continually surprised. This thread has changed my life.

I'm just catching on to Dragged Into Sunlight. They are worth checking out if you want some doomy sludgey deathmetally dark oppressiveness. This is from their second album "Widow Maker": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oc-PZW-xtgk That album has three parts. The first is a lengthy clean guitar atmospheric instrumental, the second is what is linked above and the third is more like the 2nd except toned down a bit. Their first album "Hatred for Mankind" is a bit more death metal. Pretty cool stuff

The new Uncle Acid is pretty fantastic. I really liked the Blood Lust album but there was really only about 4 or 5 songs that I would listen to frequently. I was worried that the new album wouldn't be able to hit the same spot that Blood Lust did. I was prepared to be let down so maybe that taints my judgement, but I'm finding that I like Mind Control a whole lot. Their sound is richer, the instruments sound awesome, the songs are well put together, the singing is great, they cover a lot of ground, there seem to be more substantial riffs etc. I like the new album a great deal more than Blood Lust.
