I've seen his stuff before, but I never realised just how much his stuff looks like the art in the Robin: Year One and Batgirl: Year One. I like that. Maybe a touch of Mignola in distance shots, especially in the JL:Dark cover. I really like that.

Also I think that's the best N52 Harley I've seen officially.

And probably best of all, it looks fun.

I was under the impression the Dark Age basically went from The Dark Knight Returns (or a touch after?) to when Marvel launched the Ultimate line. Unless we're splitting it into two or three distinct chunks?

I kinda like the Killing Joke recolour. I feel like it gives the comic a more sombre, grim tone. The original is cool because the colouring gives it the tone of a wild, manic nightmare; a gaudy circus horror. I don't think you can go wrong with either, really, but the colours do change the tone. Also I really love how the flashback scenes look. I love how the reds in them get brighter with every one.

I feel like The Incal recolour looks better when you look at the pieces, but it doesn't work as a whole like the original. Is there a trade that uses the original colours, or is the recolour the only one? I've been wanting to read it for a while.

Bisley owns so much. Im really digging that Mahnke art though, does anybody have any advice on what collected Mask is out there?

There are omnibus editions, two collecting the original stories and one collecting the Adventures of The Mask based on the cartoon based on the movie. I only have the old trade for the original story, so I can't comment on the other stories or the new collections, but the omnibuses should be fairly easy to find.

I'm not sure what the 1930's variant is based on, I picked up the first volume of the Superman: The Golden Age collections, and it goes to December of 1939 and I don't remember any story like that, but maybe I'm just blanking on something. I think that's Chaykin. I think that's because he didn't give a poo poo and he's been around for a long time.

Also, Bernie Wrightson was amazing, though I feel that he probably comes up more often when talking horror comics, rather than superheroes.

And Alex Ross just doesn't really do anything for me, though I'm not quite sure on why.

I love the art in the Batman/Judge Dredd comics (well, not counting Vendetta in Gotham. Not that it's bad, just so different from the others). I think it hits some of the same notes as Ross, but with more of an emphasis on stylisation. And I always did like this panel of Judge Anderson poking around in Batman's head.

I remember reading an interview with Mignola somewhere where he was talking about his shading, and his whole philosophy was something to the effect of "I drop shadows wherever I want. I make them as heavy as I want. It's not reality, it's my reality." I actually really liked that.

Thinking about it, especially since I finally got my new copy of the New Gods Omnibus, Mignola's art kinda strikes me as a gloomy take on Jack Kirby's style. Obviously there's no need to go on about how great Kirby is, so I'll just post a single panel that I really like for some reason, from The Demon #3.

There's just something about the '90's style that I can't help but like. It's not quite modern, but it doesn't quite feel like the older stuff. But then again, I've mostly read good stuff from then. Ruins was one of those ones that I heard about and it sounded like it could be interesting, but then reading the synopsis makes it sound like a complete waste of time? I do like that Hulk body horror though (and yes, I need to read Immortal Hulk, I know).

I'm not sure I've read a Warren Ellis comic, there's a bunch I wanted to, like Planetary, but I never got around to it and then everything about him came out so, you know.

Edit: I will say, from what I've seen, visually I like Ruins a lot, I like a painterly style that's also not trying to be hyper-realistic. I understand why Alex Ross has a lot of fans, but I have to admit I'm not hugely fond of his art, or at least not for interior art. His covers are great, absolutely.
