The Death Star attack is supremely rage inducing in X-Wing. The issue is that there's no real sense of progress with the first game since you're always in well shielded, mobile ships. Tie Fighter starts you in lovely Tie Fighters and Tie Bombers, and you don't get a shield until the Assault Gunboat. It's a brutal game, but a lot more exhilarating.

The rage comes back when you're fending off a million T/As and T/Ds who shoot advanced missiles at you, but that's towards the very end of the expansions.

The big high-quality mod is Fate of the Galaxy and it's apparently pretty close to a possible release in terms of work-left-to-do. No idea how long it will be in real time.

TIE Fighter's engine is a lot more advanced in terms of AI and mission scripting. You're not missing out by skipping the rest of X-Wing.

X-Wing was absolutely amazing in 1993, but out of date as hell in 1994

TIE Fighter is cruel that way, being so drat good it retroactively makes the first game bad. :v:

Okay seriously - I liked X-Wing and I played the entire campaign several times but it has nothing on TIE - here we are in 2016, just skip to the best. It's not like you'll be lacking playtime with the thirteen tours of duty in TIE Fighter, you know?

New motherboard, new videocard, reinstall of everything. Everything is running like butter -- except for FS2O. Some mods have gone nuts: I'm invisible, the enemies are invisible, except there's a glitched out model hanging in space at mission start.

Any logs I can check or things I can try to diagnose?

Hm. That crash is probably unrelated.

What the heck is 'brief lighting'? Oh; I bet it's something to do with the ship previews in briefing screens...probably not causing the issues.

Try two diagnostic steps: run with the 'no glsl' flag, and turn the res way down.

No glsl "fixed" it. Do I need to upgrade something or change out a data file or somesuch?

EDIT: The other thing that fixed it: rolling back .exe to 3.7.2. Breaks on 3.7.4.

EDIT EDIT: Based on this thread, disabled batched model rendering, working in 3.7.4 AVX. Thanks!

By Open Freespace, I'm assuming you have one of the launchers that allows you to enable all the options? If so, and assuming you've got the SCP models/effects etc, I think that's all you need.

Yeah i ran the launcher that used my gog installer, it had two errors but i think that was just for some mods then i'm running the FS2 open launcher 5.5g which is in turn running this exe

fs2_open_3_7_5_x64_SSE2_JAD.exe

which seemed to be the latest one, then put the resolution and all the other sliders to full.

edit

oh wait now the launcher wont show a resolution and says failed to set graphic mode :(

That JAD build looks like it's specifically for the Just Another Day modpack but I haven't been in the game for a while. You might be better served by some of the nightly builds on the forum: http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?board=173.0

It's loving amazing in a hilarious way. You join the police and help prevent a prison break, then get reassigned to the 666th Dark Angels, and find out that the Shivans actually just don't understand freedom so we have to explain it to them. By killing the Shivan queen.

It is absolutely worth a play. Did I mention you get to fly in a no loving joke actual Romulan Warbird and shoot beams at Shivan destroyers to kill them in one shot?

Hmm, not too familiar with that error message. At a guess I'd think it's because you're selecting the wrong graphics adapter. Not using the default 5.5g launcher since it's had trouble with Windows 10. I'd post more details to the HLP support forums, they're dedicated folk and will always be happy to help out.

EDIT: oh, assuming that 3.7.5 is an SDL build it may be that the launcher simply doesn't support it. Try getting wxLauncher, your mod downloader should have that (or YAL).

In one mission, you go on vacation, but the Shivans attack with two Lucifer destroyers. Command responds by executing order 66, which orders civilian gas tankers to ram into the Lucifers, destroying them. The debriefing laments that the price of fuel is already high.

Play this mod. Play Aftermath.
