Here my recommended travel gear http://thesavvybackpacker.com/333/ultimate-backpacking-packing-list/ It is geared towards travel in Europe so it might some of the recommendations might not work well for places like SE Asia, etc.

I have a question for all you non-US travelers. Where do you buy your travel stuff from? I run http://www.thesavvybackpacker.com and I'm wanting to write up some travel gear articles to people from the UK, Australia and Canada.

Kolta posted:I ordered this bag from MEC http://www.mec.ca/AST/ShopMEC/Packs/TravelPacks/PRD~5024-855/mec-wayfarer-travel-pack.jsp I think it would be fine. The more I travel the more I wish I had a bag similar to that. There are a lot of times where I wish I had a simple shoulder strap on my bag.

Thoguh posted:All the US carriers have that box too, they just don't actually enforce it. Yeah, I've flown Ryanair a handful of times and they only once asked me to put my backpack in the holder. I had to really shove it in but it fit. The lady seemed a bit annoyed that it actually fit but she was French so whatever...

LaserWash posted:I'll echo this too. My wife and I travel to Europe every summer. Last year was the first year we went without a checked bag. While difficult on her, it has now been learned, that this is the only way to go. Trains and buses and the unexpected headaches you can and will get from checking luggage through international planes make it worth the hassle. And it becomes a real nightmare if your luggage gets lost... especially if you're moving around a lot.

Chernori posted:Thanks for the recommendation and the advice. Coincidentally, I actually ordered it off Amazon already. It's (allegedly) making its way to my house. I definitely need that thing: AirAsia's baggage fees will destroy me otherwise. 7kg? That could be a little tough. I think when I backpacked in Europe my bag about about 9kg and I packed lighter than a lot of people.

futurebot 2000 posted:Those pants are ridiculously expensive. Just buy some Carhartt slim fit chinos and remove the label. They are made of a cotton/synthetic blend that doesn't look or feel plasticy and dries overnight. Carhartt is an expensive streetwear brand in Europe so don't remove the label.

oompah posted:Does anyone have a recommendation for a good slim fit travel blazer or sport coat? I'd like to buy it ready to wear, as my trip is in 2 weeks and I won't have time to get it tailored - not sure what is possible though, as I wear ~43 extra long. Maybe this would work? http://shop.bluffworks.com/collections/blazers
