The best thing Ion Fury had going for it was the art design and aesthetic imo, which the sequel/successor throws out to ape the DNF 2001 trailer. I get that it's by different developers but the new one just doesn't look as interesting by comparison.

It's kinda amusing to me that 'DNF 2001' is an aesthetic. You would think it would make more sense to reference a released game.
Then again, I get what you mean.

I kinda love that this is a thing. It's less specifically about any one game, more about the way ideas got lodged into a person's imagination and turn into a vibe. It's pretty cool that it can actually be a shared experience.

Personally the DNF 2001 trailer definitely got lodged in my brain, so it's a huge bummer that Phantom Fury apparently just whiffed it.

on a base level i think it's a good thing generally to chase out people who seem to be pretty much in it entirely for making GBS threads out subpar works and trying to con folks into buying them with promises of nostalgia. like yeah, it's definitely not on the level of the ion fury devs being a cesspool, but sitting there and actively lashing out at the people pointing out that your product sucks definitely won't be winning any hearts.

That tweet is incredibly lame, the stuff they're leaking/citing as a disaster is generic water-cooler talk that completely lacks any controversy or bite and the running-to-teacher @-ing of youtubers to try and rope them in is aggressively shameful. There's plenty to complain about with 3DR, Slipgate and their recent output without having to even open the barrel, let along scrape the bottom of it.

Yeah I mean the devs are just salty that they’re being called out on having worked (probably worked hard) to deliver something that obviously isn’t very good, and which will probably have repercussions on their future careers. No one seriously thinks they can get better reviews for their games by whining about youtubers and trend chasers. It’s bruised ego talking.

Eh, I understand this thread is a bit lukewarm on it, but I really liked Ion Fury, and I grew up playing way more Doom and Goldeneye than I did anything on the Build Engine. Like I thought it was absolutely fantastic and that the biggest strike against it was probably just the somewhat underwhelming enemy roster - especially given the theming.

But yeah. Phantom Fury looks like trash and that sucks because it's been over two decades and I still want that game in teh DNF trailer.

Two levels in to Phantom Fury and....I don't hate it! (yet???) Definitely feels like it needed more time in the oven already though, there's a weird lack of ambient SFX among other things. No major glitches so far. Much improved from the demo but I mean that fucken thing was dire, it wouldn't be too hard to make something even a little better than that.

They honestly didn't. the aesthetic is this weird mess of 'we want visible pixels on these kinda highres textures on models that range from Quake 1 to Half Life 2', but also 'We really don't know what we're doing so this looks like an amatuer UT99 mod made by a teenager.'
It looks nothing like the DNF trailer, because that had a specific feel of 'woah cool! huge real-ish spaces! nice photobash texturing and crazy setpieces, woahh!'

Phantom Fury can't even do a shotgun worth a poo poo. Ugliest shotguns I've ever seen.

I noticed in the Jarek review that the double-barreled shotgun sounds like rear end, because there's a TRIPLE-barreled shotgun as well and that one sounds reasonably meaty

For better or worse, I feel like in a lot of ways Ion Fury is straight up the closest we'll ever get to the "real" DNF -besides the beta leak of course.

SCheeseman

loving around with that DNF beta was some of the most fun I've had in video games for years. It was so great when, occasionally, I'd hit a little vertical slice and for a fleeting moment I was playing Duke Nukem Forever as it was originally promised to be. That glimpse of that jet in the trailer is a surprisingly fleshed out sequence for example, there's also one combat sequence in the backrooms of a casino that feels real drat good for all of the minute or so it lasts.

Spear of Destiny and Planet Strike are both much better than any of the other games on that engine, including Blake Stone and Wolf3D themselves. Both WL6 and AoG have really awful level design that make the engine seem even more limited than it actually is.

E: the real best Wolf3D engine games are ArEyeP and MCS' two Spear of Destiny sequels, just :discourse: mapping, the standard all Wolfenstein mapping should aspire to. Atomprojekt is also great but so cruelly difficult I can't recommend it to non hardcore players

I can't fathom ROTT being considered better than Blake Stone. Of all the Woilf-era games I think Blake Stone is the only one I'd actually considering replaying in earnest today (edit: I don't think I've ever played Planet Strike - I'm referring to AoG here. I should try Planet Strike). Even Wolf3D itself is redundant to me. Even though Blake Stone is fundamentally not that different, the addition of things like stationary turrets, non-hostile NPCs, switchable force-fields, vending machines, and the ability to go back to previous levels (the first hub system?) really fleshed out that formula to make it feel less like a mindless arcade shoot-em-up maze and more like a world.

I'm restarting my Cero Miedo run of Dusk - I got to the second to last map before and kept getting wasted. A few maps into E2 and I think I'm starting to feel my age; my twitch skills aren't as great, especially when everything moves so fast, and there's this hesitation when I'm switching weapons because I'm trying to make sure I'm pressing the right key. It's been doable but I'm dreading getting back to where I left off at this rate.

Game's still great though.

I've done this for ages, though I'll use numrow up til 4 or 5. If a game doesn't have a shift binding, that's another free spot, and side mouse buttons are great for important weapon keys as well.
