For as much poo poo as SMGs get sometimes, they're a blast to use if you just use the kamikaze approach. There's something amazing about blitzing a large group of enemies, only having one left alive when your clip's about to empty, then using Bullet Storm for 16 seconds of infinite ammo for the last guy left standing.

Pistols are overpowered, but everything else is more-or-less equally cool.

That reminds me, there's one fight that is an enormous pain in the rear end if you only have inaccurate/short-range weapons (SMGs and Shotguns). Luckily, it's easily avoided (or just bring grenades).

One thing I think makes this game special that I never see many people praise is its complete lack of filler. You are always moving forward in this game. There are no fetch quests, you'll never have to run around a "Rome" consisting of two blocks looking for NPCs with exclamation points over their heads, and there are no party members you have to chat up after every mission if you want to unlock their sidequests. Every mission, whether optional or not, ties into the main storyline and is pretty much guaranteed to be referenced later.

I agree, but the Triad stuff was pretty filler-ish.

Best of all, you actually converse with NPCs, not just pull information out of them like computer terminals. You will never have a conversation that goes, "Tell me about this area... tell me about X... now tell me about Y... now back to my other questions... I have to go!"

Actually, you do this several times in Saudi Arabia. Another thing that makes it a bad representative of the full game.

So can anyone tell me how viable a stealth/martial arts run would be? I'd quite like to do the whole game without using a gun if its not going to be too hard. Will be playing on recruit this time as well

I did this, except without the stealth, which I assume would make it easier.

Most important bit of advice for a full non-lethal run (if that's what you're going for): gadgets are your backup. Some enemies, in some levels (all the ones I can think of are optional), you will be forced to fight without being able to reach them. The biggest offender is a level-ending fight in Taipei, and an optional boss in Moscow.

Some people will also complain about a certain required boss in Moscow. Those people are silly and can't tell when a game is telling you run and wait.

Let's be fair here: the first few hours of the game, in Saudi Arabia, aren't very good as an introduction to the game or as a game in general, and to really appreciate how good the game is you have to beat it multiple times. Games reviewers aren't going to have the time to beat it to completion multiple times to really see its virtues, and most players don't beat games once, much less multiple times. First impressions really do count, and AP gives a lousy one.

Which is a shame because it really is great. Maybe some more extensive use of the flash-forward teases during the SA section would have let people know "don't worry, this isn't another goddamn military shooter set in the desert, poo poo is going to get off the loving chain in short order."

Yeah, that would have been pretty awesome. Honestly, the opening with Leland should have said something like "Well, Mr. Thorton, you've travelled all around the world and made quite a mess of things." Or even mentioning Moscow, Taipei and Rome by name. Basically, there should be a bunch of stuff underlining how you are a super-cool agent in a super-tough spot. I'm not even sure what it gains by showing the attack on the plane.

Also speaking of wishing cutscenes were skippable...

Shoot the alarm panels first, so alerted enemies can't trigger them.

I've done it on Recruit. It's a hassle, and I think all you get is avoiding a -1 rep, but I did it anyway.

Basically, take your time, observe all the guard's motions, check your Awareness when you come back to the lobby area, because a new guard comes back, and most importantly of all: don't bother, it's not worth it.

Edit: If you mean ghosting it, I'm not sure if that's possible. It is perfectly fine to knock all the guards out as long as they aren't alerted to your presence.

It is, like I said, I've done it. It changes the dialogue with Parker very slightly: instead of Thorton saying "whatever, they don't know it was me" and Parker scoffing and getting -1 rep, Mike says "No one saw me that I know of," and Parker says "that'll have to do."

Coming from Parker, that's high praise.
