edit: And I'd heard the stuff about Lowe being the "star" of the show as initially planned and then it becoming more of an ensemble, but I wasn't sure if his actual departure was planned from the start of season 4 or if one day he just said gently caress it and left or something.

17 People stands as one of my favorite episodes of this series, but I have a pressing question. Since 17 People contains tons of spoilers for season 1 through the first episode of season 2, it doesn't make for a very good intro to the show for someone new. I want to get my friend to start watching what is my absolute favorite TV show, but I can't decide on an episode to direct him to to start off. Basically don't want anything that will spoil the revelation that Bartlet has MS so if anyone has a good recommendation that doesn't bring up that plot point, let me know. I also don't care which season it's from, as long as it stands as a good intro to the series.

I know freedom of religion is in the first, but isn't the Separation of Church and State spelled out in one of the ancillary letters Jefferson wrote, not the Consitution?

E: and to be clear, the show doesn't necessary have to shape your opinion, my point is more that it presents a stance and *then backs it up*, which is what I love. Even if you come out of the other end of the census episode still against sampling, you can no longer pretend to not understand why there are people who favor sampling. That kind of thing.


* - Hmm, I found this quote online. It's actually the 14th amendment, but even thinking about it in my mind, I think she says "article 14", which would be a bit of a misstep, but I'll ignore that

I'm watching the Season 6/7 campaign and man, I totally forgot how bad The Debate is.

Strikes against:
-It's a gimmick episode. I'll admit this is a personal issue as I hate the 9/11 episode and the CJ documentary episode.
-It's one of the worst examples of West Wing political fantasies (long goofy speeches, rounds of applause for democracy, having a "real" debate).
-The "live" televising is problematic because of dropped lines and awkward pauses (which is arguably intentional to give it a live debate feel, but Smits really struggled here).
-Despite wanting to be a "real" debate, it suffers from the same issue of watching two candidates re-explain their platforms that the audience already knows. Clips of that is good. 40 minutes of is not.
