That's actually close to something one of the producers (perhaps Sorkin himself) said when asked why they didn't just write out Mandy by having her die at Roslyn. "Nobody would have cared". I'm not sure it's true. My hatred for her was so intense that I may have done a little dance of happiness.

That would have been a really hard plot line to balance. I'm trying to imagine it and I just don't think it could have worked - writing her out with no explanation was probably better. Devoting too much (read: any) screen time to characters being sad over Mandy would have pissed off the audience who were more concerned about Josh but giving too little to her would have felt cheap and would kind of have shown the WW staff as pretty heartless people. 'Oh, Mandy died? Hm. Ok. But Josh'.

(This is more than I have previously thought about Mandy in the whole of my life...)

Dr. Hampton is doing fine. She continued to pull mid-six figures operating as a top end consultant on the beltway throughout the Bartlet administration until she married and had two children, a boy and a girl. She now resides comfortably in Connecticut where he son will eventually row crew and her daughter will go on to be an Olympic figure skater with a fascination with the term 'toe-pick'.

Mandy got exactly what she deserved; let's just leave it at that.

My wife and I finished our West Wing watchthrough a few weeks ago and it's left a huge hole in our TV watching habits. It's funny how the show listed precipitously late in its life, as many long-running programs do; but unlike many other such shows, where you're almost happy to see them put out of their misery, "The West Wing" really left you wondering what might have happened in the Santos administration. Always leave them wanting more....

Except for the fact that her father was lost in the crash of Oceanic Flight 815, her life has been excellent.

They must have had quite a time figuring out the perfect combination of states to let them win their home states, not have any egregiously wrong victories (Santos wins Alabama!), and have it all come down to a single state.

Swap NH and VT, and SC and IA, and Santos would still win 270-268. I mean, didn't Vinick massively bomb his Iowa chances in King Corn?

That was definitely a smart play, made any sort of distribution believable.

I also love that they made such a perfect, ideal "Republican" that they had to write in a nuclear power plant meltdown to weaken him.

No, he gave a passionate speech reflecting his true beliefs and rose above politics. In the West Wing that means you win.

I thought he was dead in real life something like three or four episodes before they killed him on screen? But even with that, from memory he might already have died later.

Even Sam gave up on his seatbelt idea, though.

Which brings up the idea of Michigan as a swing state in the WW universe. It's not that deep blue in our universe but it's reliably Democratic.

Yeah I never really had a problem with that idea. It was $115,000 and they said it wasn't just Christianity based. Fund the drat study and pass your stupid bill.

Yeah I'm as atheist as they come but poo poo throw some pork the gently caress do I care.

Also, that was one of those grating "you're hammering it too much" West Wing moments.

"they want 115 thousand"
"you mean million"

like five times that episode. We get it, 115 thousand is not a lot of money in this context. Once or twice will do, thanks.

John Spencer died in between the airdates of episodes 9 and 10, the nuclear accident happened episode 12. There was a christmas break in between 9 & 10 so there would have been enough time to add the storyline after changed deciding on Vinick winning.

Plus they managed to hide, for nearly 7 years, Janel Moloney. The first reveal of her in a bra in the hotel bathroom is quite the revelation.* She's really, really put together.

Oh and she can act too so that's important.

While I'm sure that at a certain point they decided that Josh and Donna would get together in the end, I don't believe for a second that they knew the arc too far in advance. However, it played out perfectly. It never felt forced, or stalled, it just played out organically over 7 seasons, exactly as it should have. I mean, maaaybe a bit of a stall in season 5, but what wasn't that year.

* - edit: the gently caress kind of sentence is that

I had my own version of the cold open from that episode yesterday. I work at a casino and we created a promotion where you could come in, pick who you think will win the election and win some money to play the slots. We had no less than 100 people who thought they were actually casting their vote for the election and a few who were upset that they couldn't get the slot play because they already voted and didn't break the law by voting twice.

It was something like 419-119. Ritchie won barely any states except for his home state and the deep reds like Idaho or Alabama.
