I've just started reading this and binged a fair way through the archives (just after she burns the chapel in Kvatch). It's a pretty big stretch to describe it as torture porn. It kind of reminds me of Bojack Horseman, in as much as it involves a sympathetically flawed person trying to work their way through a lovely life they just can't seem to work out. I dunno, cartoon animals seem to be a good vessel for that sort of thing and I'm a sucker for it anyway, so while the first 50 pages or so are pretty crushingly depressing in a ha-ha stupid-slut kind of way, I find it a little hard to believe that someone could read much further and still write it off as torture porn that wasn't clearly based in its entirety on helping the protagonist rise up and beyond her old life.

EDIT: Okay, all caught up. The flash segment with the peg puzzle is beautiful and awesome.

Prudent? Sensible? I mean, isn't that what people normally do when they want to make something but lack the requisite skill or time? It's technically accurate by the strictest definition of incompetent, but not in the way that anyone in the world actually uses the word.

A lack of updates also isn't a sign of incompetence, unless it's his day job.

Afraid of Audio posted:

You are a goddamn idiot who still posts about Gamergate as if it is in any way legitimate while also creating a webcomic about a character who is repeatedly raped as a punchline.

Somehow I think these activities are related.

Katia has exactly two drunken one night stands, neither of which the reader sees. I appreciate that I'm clearly not an impartial observer here, but I think I'm being extremely charitable in saying that 'repeatedly raped' might be a minor overstatement, particularly in a world where a series like Archer exists, where in one episode the female lead is literally traded for sex in a game of baccarat.

edit:

Kazerad posted:

I wrote a post on my personal blog recently explaining why I feel the way I do about the GamerGate thing! I try to make it pretty clear that I'll bail on it as soon as something comes along that can more effectively address my concerns with the industry. Though, it's not like I'm lending much support to begin with; all I really do is write essays about my observations while simultaneously encouraging everyone to recognize my bias and question my conclusions.

You're trying to be reasonable about it, so I say this with absolute sincerity: I think you're being astonishingly naive and optimistic in thinking that the poop-smeared matchstick remains of the goodship GamerGate can ever be salvaged. Just say your piece in general terms without tying it to that sinking ship and let people take it as they will, because whether you wish it were the case or not, it sets the tone of debate about as well as "I'm not racist, but".

How about not doing that either. If Prequel and its creator are such monsters then take it to the bad webcomic thread and gripe about it there. Most webcomic threads here tend to die off, apart from a few big ones like Gunnerkrigg Court. It's the reason why Poppy didn't get its own thread despite getting more and more popular. It's entirely possible that Prequel would be better off being discussed in the main thread; it would probably be a lot better for reining in the shitposting too, as the rest of the thread wouldn't put up with it for long.

Doctor_Fruitbat

When I first came into the thread I didn't read back that far, or indeed at all, because I had a horrible sinking feeling that nothing good lay that way. Lesson learned I guess.

Edit: a thread with that little activity would probably do better being part of the main webcomic thread though, so it can attract new readers more easily.

Anyway, Kazerad should follow in the footsteps of all the great mangaka and make that cooking webcomic he's secretly yearning to unleash.

I'm definitely getting a closeted, self-hating denial vibe from Audio here.

I mean, Katia hasn't had sex or even technically been de-clothed in over three years and three quarters of the comic, yet you still seem to be obsessed with seeing her violated in some way.

I am sure Audio applies his criteria fairly and similarly hates Breaking Bad (Walt violently hosed Sky out of nowhere because he felt like it), Archer (Lana gets sold for sex in a game of baccarat, is frequently exposed against her will) and Game of Thrones (violent, forced on-screen rape).

Imagination really needs a solid base of inspiration behind it as well as space to breathe. Lego sets get the hands working and let kids see how things can be constructed; once they're bored of their Lego city or think of something they'd like adding, they'll get right on it.

Edit: Audio's gone for a grouch in the webcomics thread, but he didn't say what comic he was referring to so everyone's ignoring him.

It's not entirely obvious until you've read the whole thing, but there is a moment 50 pages in (around where Zoe linked to) where Katia turns a corner and the comic gets really enjoyable.

The first 50 pages are kind of mean-spirited in that they're just one crushing disappointment after another with humour indiscriminately sewn throughout and you certainly wouldn't be the first person to quit during that period. This is generally the time where the whole 'torture porn' accusation comes from.

50 pages in though, Katia vows to turn things around and you can see a distinct change in the way the comic treats her. She starts having a great many successes - getting on with things instead of endlessly screwing up, learning some great new skills, successfully navigating a dinner party with a scary countess and gaining enough self confidence that later on, when she hits another dark moment, her response is (after struggling with her feelings for a bit) to get that poo poo sorted.

The tone of the comic also changes to use humour and drama much more effectively - moments where Katia is just screwing about are pretty tame and easily laughed off, for both us and her, like trying to take on a pair of mudcrabs by hiding behind a rock and chucking apples at them. Bigger setbacks, like her nightmares, often drop the humour entirely and become these really neat, dark, dramatic moments, with some good animated and/or interactive segments with the occasional clever twist, like Katia's dream self hiding from a monster inside a drop-down box.

The most obvious example of this came recently, where a bad situation was treated with humour because Katia (for reasons I won't spoil) didn't realise the danger she was blindly walking through, then as she came to her senses and lost control of her emotions it became this grimly atmospheric nightmare that ramped up the drama nicely. Then it all got capped off in a really fun, emotionally satisfying and well made segment where she learns some new skills, has a confusing pep-talk from a ghost, gets her confidence back and goes to get. That. poo poo. SORTED. LIKE THIS:

If you aren't convinced by the dinner party, try this link on a PC that can run flash, do the interactive bits and read to the current update - it's pretty much the comic at its best and if that won't convince you then it really isn't for you!

See, this is the kind of thing I wanted to talk about in this thread originally. God it feels good to just enthuse about stuff. :)

$2881 on the fundraiser; that's a pretty momumental amount of Lego. Can you get a delivery direct from a Lego store Kaz? It would save you having to sort this out yourself. Are there enough sick children for that much Lego? Can this actually be done before Xmas?

Doctor_Fruitbat

Yeah, I don't want to say that Prequel is a fantasy slice-of-life comic or anything like that, but it's refreshing nonetheless to have a fantasy story that's more concerned with the everyday bullshit of Katia McNobody rather than a grand adventure full of destiny and prophecy, except more interesting than it would be for, say, a peasant in Game of Thrones. There are books that take that approach, but not a lot of comics I can think of off the top of my head, other than Oglaf, which is a daily strip style of comic anyway.

Hell, a fantasy slice-of-life comic sounds great, are there any of those about?

Interesting that the only other Khajiit so far (silent, angry barkeeps don't count) is still just running away from her problems, despite otherwise being perfectly confident and capable. She even says "a functional Khajiit runs away from danger, not headlong toward it." Which is sensible, but sounds like an excuse to not make things better for herself.

Anyway, we'll show her. Once we've done this basic errand one town over, we'll have shown her!

I did even worse the second time despite having a good idea of what to do (47 hits the first time, 50 the next) and the stunlock was utterly infuriating, but it was a neat update all the same, just maybe some minor tweaking needed. I may have to switch back to a Katia avatar with that 'gently caress Everything!' line.

hold barrels in front of you with Z if you want but it doesn't seem to help much. Luckily Katia seems to be strongly resistance to repeated fireballs to the face; must be that protective layer of fur.

Blocking shots prevents them from becoming exploding marks on the floor, as well as stopping you from getting hit and being stunned. It's hard as hell to avoid being hit at all, mind you.

When you say you got a pin, do you mean the game gave you something? How? Because I got my time down as close to 100 seconds as possible and got nothing. Even doing it as fast as possible (literally mousing over and shooting him as soon as the game starts) wouldn't give me a sub-100 second score without hits.

Katia is definitely getting her cut, although if Rajirra sticks around for payment I'd hope a mixture of her attitude and the fact she ran, immediately after lecturing Katia on all that stuff beforehand, is enough for Katia to go "nope, gently caress you and the horse you rode in on, I want more".

But I guess Raj did help with the first two, so whatever. Katia probably isn't quite ready to renegotiate for a 50/50 cut.

I dunno, we've had one update to conclude the fight, one update where Katia bullshits about being an idiot, then the next update will probably involve her actually getting out, or at least moving on to arguing with Rajirra or similar; that seems reasonable enough for this style of comic, where half the point is her reacting to internet voices.

Also, the gif where she grabs the inventory bar was awesome.
