I'm with you on this one, only I don't think there were that many cool melodic ideas. It rather sounded like someone mashed together Nightwish and some generic melodeath band and fed them amphetamines. And so it continues to boggle my mind that most people I know who listen to metal at all seem to like Wintersun.

Edit: I also got the nagging feeling that I've heard it all before.

I felt the same way when the newest Turisas came out. I heard it once, felt it was too much and walked away. It's just too over the top maybe?

Sounds about right to me. I know it's a different lineup, but the Unborn was a loving awesome album, so I'm pretty excited for this.

Thank you for this. MPE is one of my favorite bands and I'm glad to see them back on track.

Edit: Listened to it again. I don't like how his vocals changed. He had deeper vocals in the first three. Oh well, everything else is still spot on.

I'm going to echo the vast majority of the people here and agree that sub-genres are best used as guidelines. Pretty every major metal sub-genre (death, black, thrash, and so on) will contain a great deal of a variation in style from band to band even if they fall under the same sub-genre "umbrella". The fact that a band might change style may or may not affect their fanbase. A band like Opeth is a good example of someone who has shifted drastically over the years and they still maintain quite a large following despite it.

In the end, you can get ridiculously finite with sub-genres and labels, but it gets to a point of sheer pretentiousness when someone argues that American progressive/post-black metal is much more intense than any British ambient/shoegazey/post-black metal ever could be. Oi... I already see enough hipsters at an Agalloch show. Just shoot me now.

Anaal Nathrakh is excellent all around. Vanitas is much better than Passion and feels much more like they are back on track after In the Constellation of the Black Widow. Hell is Empty... was solid as hell and everything before is pretty much on par, getting blacker as you go back into their discography.

I still prefer their version of De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas over Mayhem's :colbert:

Meshuggah is definitely a band you cannot be on the fence about, that's for sure. I've been listening to them since Chaosphere and every record has at least a few really solid tracks, but they can be straight up weird sometimes, no denying that.

Also, loving the Epic/Heavy Metal recommendations. Keep them coming :)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p3qb5jf1nE4

I didn't even know Thebon had left the band, but apparently Obsidian Claw (Arnt) is doing vocals now (clean and harsh). It can't be as bad as Reptilian, right? I mean, it won't be Armada, but I can't have everything.

Edit: They are also signed to some Indian label with three bands (including them, the other two being Indian). Who hosed that up? Ugh, so we won't see a tour for awhile unless they saved up their money..

Out of curiosity, what makes you dislike it so much? I don't see it as being very "black metal" in the traditional sense. Their first two albums were definitely moreso, but I just can't see Armada as being *that* incredibly bad. To each his own, I'm just curious if there's something I missed. That seems like it's always the album people mention when they think of KoK.

Whining about Slipknot.

Well, regardless of how anyone in the metal community may feel about them, Slipknot is a gateway drug for many kids to get into metal. Basically, an entire generation of kids shifted away from hard rock and into nu-metal/metal because of bands like Slipknot. Because of this accessibility, they were, and still are, immensely popular. According to their Wiki, the RIAA rates all of their albums as either Gold or Platinum, which is more than any of the bands you listed. If you think that festivals like this are anything more than massive promotional outlets, you're crazy. It also doesn't help that you found festivals that basically comprise of other gateway drug bands. Even Ozzfest had really good bands occasionally, but it was always only one or two out of a lineup of mostly nu-metal or mallcore. It may not be right through the eyes of a metalhead, but it does make perfect business sense. They want to sell tickets. We all know who Slipknot are and it's kind of hard to knock their success.

Edit: gently caress my grammar.

If anyone wants some more throat singing/Chinese folk metal you could check out Ego Fall. Tengger Cavalry does a cover of one of their songs. They have a lot of influences (a lot of folk and some electronic even) and it may be a bit too metalcore-y, but I still enjoy it. Their tracks vary quite a bit so it's worth trying to listen to a few before you form too much of an opinion.

Also, until 2012, Tengger was all done by this loving kid. Ugh... if only I had that kind of dedication.

Edit: Also, just found The Nine Treasures. Chinese Korpiklaani.

I've been following this thread for a bit and it's pretty clear to me that my taste in metal differs dramatically from most of the people here. I can't stand metal with guttural vocals and growling (besides Opeth because I like that guy's voice). I much prefer stuff along the lines of The Haunted (actually, I like basically all of Peter Dolving's work), Dillinger Escape Plan, or almost anything with Devin Townsend. It's crappy for me because sometimes I stumble upon bands with great sounding music; but then the singer starts and ruins it for me.

Hey man, more power to you for knowing what you like. Metal has a lot to offer besides the vocal style that you are trying to avoid, though. Actually, if you avoid Death metal entirely, pretty much every other genre of metal has a less guttural feel. Devin Townsent is really progressive and is a pretty huge gateway drug for other bands like Dream Theater, Pain of Salvation, even Mastodon. Dillinger is pretty "core-y" for people in these parts, but you can probably dig Ion Dissonance and Converge. Converge gets a lot of love here even.

The new album isn't bad at all. It starts of boring but it gets good halfway through and keeps it up. There's some Necrotism to be found among the Heartwork for sure.

Slaughter was a gateway album for me so it's got a special place even though it's arguably their worst album. And I'm glad to hear that Surgical Steel sounds like it's at least decently solid.
