On the bus on my way to work this morning I noticed the driver was listening to something with proper heavy riffs (I could only vaguely hear it as I was a few seats behind him). What I could hear sounded pretty familiar, though, and eventually it dawned on me that it was Blood Fire Death, no bullshit. Hail to the bus driver!

I might get a day pass if enough of the bands I'd like to see are scheduled for the same day. We had Headbanger's Ball on MTV ;)

Where I grew up we didn't have MTV. Rural Norway, no cable TV services extending to the area I lived in, one single broadcast TV station and two national radio channels, end of story. One of the radio channels had a one-hour weekly show which played hard rock and metal; I used to tape this show and listen to it several times in order to find new stuff I'd like.

It took a bit of effort tracking down obscurer poo poo before the internet.

Yeah. Word-of-mouth via friends (there was no metal scene either out in the sticks, or much of any other kind of music scene for that matter; I had maybe two or three friends that listened to metal), or pure dumb luck. One weekly hour on the radio, as mentioned. Also you could go in to town (which was not a big town) and browse through the albums at the record shop in hopes of finding something that looked and sounded cool (there was no specialty metal or rock shop but the generic record shops would sometimes carry stuff like Metallica or even Slayer, and any shop worth your business would make special orders for you once you knew what you wanted). While you were there you could pick up a magazine or two and read some album reviews and whatnot.

These days, feh, you can learn the name of a random band during breakfast and be halfway through their discography by lunchtime. :corsair:

Yeah, what we've got is a gently caress-off huge blessing of multiple natural resources, plus responsible social democracy.

poo poo is indeed pretty expensive here, and it seems even worse for tourists because tourists will usually depend a lot on eating out, drinking out, etc. The price of eating or drinking out is much inflated over and beyond the cost of the actual stuff you're eating or drinking because it also involves paying for labour (kitchen staff, waitstaff, cleaning staff, etc) and labour is very much not cheap here. Nor is rent unless you're in a truly poo poo location. (The cheapest places to eat are all immigrant-run family-owned joints where the owners can get away with paying the workers poo poo because they're all family and feel obligated to work there.)

The traditional way for Norwegians to do a night on the town involves starting with a pre-game party in someone's home where you drink beer from a grocery store or booze from a liquor store (in either case much cheaper than you can get it in bars or restaurants), then you only go out once you're nice and buzzed, so you only need to pay for maintenance drinks. It is also traditional to sometimes get properly drunk at the pre-game and never make it out the door (even to the point of missing out on concerts you've already bought tickets for, etc.)

If anyone is familiar with the Kansas City Sprint center, anything I should know in particular? I plan on dropping money on some good spots soon as tickets become buyable.
I'm in Arkansas and pretty much as a rule, no good bands come within 4 hours of here, let alone any metal ones. This would be my first major metal concert and I am not really sure what to expect.

Rule 1: If at all possible, buy standing-up tickets rather than sitting-down tickets. You want to see Maiden standing on your own two goddamn feet. (Assuming you have two goddamn feet, of course). It's going to be a sweaty experience so dress accordingly.

Maiden are pretty well known for always putting on a good show and in my experience the crowd is usually quite good-natured. I've seen them three times this side of THE YEAR 2000 and each time it's been a pretty thorough mix of original-generation fans and younger people -- quite a lot of father/son teams, in fact.

If there's even the vaguest context to go by, everyone will know what you're talking about if you just refer to "the ducks". And in this country that basically breathes Donald Duck, Don Rosa is the most popular "duck artist".

Same goes for other right-thinking countries such as Norway. Given that we in this corner of the world where the duck comics are so big also have the greatest per-capita rate of metal bands, I guess it was only a matter of time before something like this came along.
