The production on Time is amazing. There is so much going on, but it all comes through so clearly and without encroaching on other stuff. I guess all those RAMS paid off.

Edit- VV- This I can agree with, some faster stuff like Battle Against and Winter Madness would have been nice. Maybe on Time II .

I don't mean to turn this into Devin chat but I don't really like his floatier stuff, but adore SYL and his more recent stuff. His passion, energy and pure love for music is what makes him special.

Will just leave this here and bugger off.

Finland is awesome for metal. I was visiting my grandma there and the first radio station I put on in my rented car was 'Radio Rock' playing stuff like Pantera and Maiden at 9 am.

Get these albums:

Addicted!
Deconstruction (tough to get into because it's so crazy but with some awesome stuff)
Alien (first SYL album I heard, and my favourite)
Ziltoid

I hope Time II is a step up from Time I, since I considered that a bit of a let down overall.

Time I has only just clicked for me, I was disappointed at first at how bomabastic and long the songs were but the other day I suddenly loved it. 'Sons of Winter and Stars' is like a mixture of 'Winter Madness' and 'Battle Against', whilst 'Land of Snow and Sorrow' has the same mournful melody as 'Death and the Healing'. Its a complex album, and like Devin Townsend's Deconstruction just takes time (har) to appreciate.

Still, there were only three actual songs, not really enough after 6 years.

Land of Snow and Sorrow is boring as gently caress, It's got a couple neat riffs, but it is extremely meandering. I wouldn't care so much (I don't care for one or two of the songs on the self-titled either), but it's nearly a quarter of the album's run-time.

I loving love the rest of the record though, and the songs sound absolutely incredible live.

I do prefer this version of the song.

Well, we have some news on Wintersun's Time II. It's not good news..

quote:

We are starting the mix of 'Time II' and it will be released early 2014. The album will continue where 'Time I' left, but it will be an upgrade in production; it will be equally epic, if not more. It will contain some 'fast stuff' and some guitar shredding (including seven solos), like some of you metalheads and guitar wankers have been wishing for. It will also contain some of the most beautiful music ever written that will bring a tear to your eye.

2014...:suicide:. I do like the phrase 'Metalheads and guitar wankers' and nominate it for a new thread title.

Saw Ghost and Gojira last night. Gojira, like when I saw them before were absolutely crushing. So much energy and their drummer, Mario is extremely talented and stole the show. Him and the vocalist swapped places for a short song which was pretty cool.

I had mixed feelings about Ghost. I really like the first album, but seeing it live didnt blow me away. All of the instruments, and the vocals were just a little bit too loud and took away that chilled and deliberate sound they have in the studio version. The stage was pretty much constantly covered in smoke though, which made the silhouettes of the 'ghouls' milling around and playing their instruments look pretty damned spooky. I did overhear a few people commenting that they were poo poo, and one of my fellow concert-goers who had never heard them said he was bored to tears.

You know what, Ghost have some mixed opinions here, but I really like their stuff. Their first album was awesome, and all three tracks from the upcoming Infestissumam all sound great. Sure, they might sound like worship from the old occult/metal/rock genre that's been said and done, but it's good poo poo and sufficiently different from a lot of the metal I've heard lately.

Saw Sonata Arctica last night here in London, and it was actually a really good show. I skipped the opening acts and drank lots of beer before heading in. They sound great live and have a really good energy about them. Saying that, the setlist was a bit disappointing, mostly consisting of their newer and more mid-tempo type stuff. I was hoping for the really fast stuff from the earlier albums but they didn't really do anything from those. Still, a good show well worth the money.

You know what, this thread needs some juvenile poo poo. I recently discovered Zimmers Hole and I love it. Its the SYL band with a vocalist who seems inspired by Devin Townsend but has awesome range and his own style, singing about farts, blowjobs and necrophilic fisting like any self respecting novelty metal band. Solid as a frozen poo poo.

Oh dear, they are going down the route of a female opera singer which is pretty cheesy. I quite liked the other guy's high pitched squealing.

You know what, I quite like the new Turisas album. Even though they seem to have lost the plot, there's a lot of good stuff there and somehow, it mostly works! I do miss the violin though and there are a lot of trumpet parts (which sound good) which would have sounded great with the violin; its such a nice, crisp sound and adds quite a lot to the folky elements which seem to want to forget in favour of muted bombast.

Just got back from seeing Finntroll, supported by Tyr and Skalmold. I am completely covered in beer and sweat, but loving hell Finntoll put on a good show. Such energy and a great party atmosphere with their oompah, kazoo brand of mischievous metal complete with bowler hats and fake ears. I caught the drummer's stick and some fucker grabbed it out of my hand and disappeared. Bad form.

Skalmold were really good, never heard of them before but they were having a ton of fun. Tyr, were ok but didn't really seem to have the same energy.

Long story short, if you ever get the chance to see Finntroll in a club venue, do it.
