"This woman...she's killed before, and not just once..."

Saw Motorhead with Saxon and Crobot on Tuesday. I'm surprised Lemmy was able to get out of Europe long enough to come to the states, not to mention only a 45 minute drive away!

Crobot was pretty good. Very animated stage presence and passable music. I wasn't chomping at the bit to look their stuff up afterwards but I enjoyed watching them perform. Saxon was great. They delivered pretty hard and I was into it more than I thought cuz I haven't heard anything by them besides "Wheels of Steel." With as much energy as they had you'd think they were the ones on tour and Lemmy was tagging along (Battering Ram was pretty drat good).

Motorhead's set was good but lackluster. I wish they would have played more newer stuff than "Lost Woman Blues" (still, one of my favorites off Aftershock), instead of bumming around on Ace of Spades and Overkill's tracklist. I guess Lemmy being fresh off his lung infection meant he wanted to keep it simple, and that was fine. He might have had to take a few breaks to do a full set, which were covered up by Phil and Mikkey Dee doing solos for a couple minutes. Mikkey's fuckin nuts and you wouldn't think they were over 50 with the rear end they tore up there.

We got rained out before any meet-and-greet could happen, but Phil did swing by for some autographs and photos. I drew a picture for them to sign and I'm glad I at least got one signature:

(during the encore I think Lemmy saw the picture while scanning the audience and smiled, but I could just be self-serving)

I'm glad Lemmy was able to power through a full set after what he went through the past few weeks, but it's a bummer that I wasn't able to see him at full strength.

Last night I went to see GWAR. The universe conspired against my friends coming so I wore three extra white tees on my arms and head. I went to see them last year, and while they were good then they were even better this time. It feels like the group is getting more comfortable adjusting to the hole Oderus left.

However, the biggest surprise that night was the opening acts. Thorhammer was okay, but the personality of the singer between songs kept things amusing. Battlecross was great; really good thrash, and it was nice to see a local band kicking rear end as much as they did. They would have been the biggest surprise if Butcher Babies didn't perform after them. I never heard anything about them, so seeing two ladies come on and belt out the vocals like they were was fuckin bonkers. It was like Arch Enemy but one of them sang with a deeper bass than AE's singer so it was even crazier. I didn't expect an opening band to rile the crowd up as much as they did. One of them even climbed into the crowd to instigate a mosh pit!

The main event obviously killed just as much if not more. I was dead center for GWAR's set, and the crowd was smushing us against the rail. I think they aimed right at me a few times, and Blothar and I might have exchanged gestures. :v:

The acts were more graphic than last year's was, which was cool cuz there was definitely more crazy energy that night. No Techno Destructo, but Bonesnapper was there to sing the best song of the set. "Sick of You" was a wicked boss way to end the night; I didn't realize just how much I could get into that song.

I'm glad GWAR isn't running out of steam yet. With most of the bands I'm into thinking about packing it in past their prime it's nice to see a concert with as much energy as the scumdogs give.

Yeah, they have a hell of a live performance, but despite that I wasn't feeling any of their songs. Battlecross was better music-wise.

Did some stuff last night:

"Tonight, a titanic hole was left in the world. Lemmy Kilmister, the physical embodiment of Rock n' Roll, died from a bout with cancer as aggressive as would be expected of a lifestyle as insane as his finally catching up to him. Lemmy was a great musician and a hell of a guy, and Motorhead stayed strong right until the end. I'm glad I was able to see them live earlier this year. He was at least able to get one more album out before he finally gave up the ghost. The world is less whole now, but at least Oderus and Dio have a bassist for their superband in Hell.

2015 just wouldn't go quietly. Here's to a better 2016. Rest in Peace, you iron horse. We'll meet again soon enough."

I never got to see GWAR before Brockie died, but luckily I was able to see Lemmy in September. I might have seen him smile at another piece I did back then. Cheers.

Went to see Devin Townsend at the Ready Room this past Tuesday with Oni and Thank You Scientist. Didn't expect him to ever come closer to here than Chicago. The show kicked rear end, the smaller venue was perfect for how he plays and interacts with the audience.

I drew something for him to sign. Wasn't sure if I'd get a signature, but during the finale he noticed it, we excitedly mouthed words at each other until he motioned to hand the picture to him, then he showed the audience and signed it after the show ended. Made my drat night.

I prolly should have brought a different marker, but the act of handing it to him and getting it signed was amazing by itself.

GWAR was in town on Friday with US Bastards, Doyle, and Ghoul. Third time seeing them. All the opening acts were pretty good. US Bastards had a tribute to Lemmy and played "Killed By Death" which was awesome. I felt like we were watching an exhibition of early 2000's goth fashion with Doyle (I dug the swole shirtless dude with the skull makeup) but they were fun and fittingly phallic. Ghoul was a good time, was like GWAR-lite and I dug another act that involved props and characters n poo poo. Didn't realize they've made five albums already but they definitely killed it.

Michael Bishop feels like he's coming into his own as lead singer now. It was good hearing him on Blood of the Gods to get his own identity as a vocalist and the set definitely felt more comfortable with some of his own tracks to play. The gore effect for Dickie Duncan is hilarious and I love that the players' inside arms are dressed up as intestines or whatever (his number and El Presidente were two of the highlights, with Herr Cheeto sumo wrestling with Bonesnapper during the latter). Bonesnapper was messing with the security again by bonking them with nukes which is always great. It was cool that they used an instrumental of "Morality Squad" for their fight with Sawborg, gives those older tracks more versatility. "Phantom Limb" is such a badass and touching tribute to Brockie, feels a lot more resonant than their People Who Died cover.

Good poo poo. I'm definitely looking into Ghoul now.

I spent a couple weeks a while back getting reacquainted with Dir en Grey. Past-Me lamented Marrow of a Bone for being a departure from their earlier work. After going through all their stuff after Marrow I'm glad I don't listen to that jerk very often cuz holy hell their heavy stuff slaps.

After checking their older stuff out again you can really feel how far they've all come as musicians and it's great seeing them challenge themselves.

Earthside's new album came out last month. After finding them a few years back it's great to see more. Overall it didn't hit me quite as hard as their debut album did (mostly cuz that one came outta nowhere) but this one delivered on being more Earthside without retreading old ground. Plus this album ends on a much better song than the previous one did.

Here's my favorite track:

I haven’t seen him much since then but he’s doing great

Sexcellent! :perfect:

My friend and I couldn't get to a GWAR show before Brockie's death, but for a few years I went to their shows when they'd tour here. Each time their opening acts got better which was cool. I was front and center against the railing most of the time which meant I'd leave each show with a sore gut and my shirts would only be one color from how much entrails I got blasted by.

These days I don't do concerts, but my brother-in-law works venues and saw both them and Bloodywood and he said they're both great.

No Prayer and Fear of the Dark are Maiden at their absolute worst, with Bruce turning in inexplicably bad performances considering how much better his subsequent solo output would go on to be. Somewhere In Time and Powerslave are Maiden's best.

Rime of the Ancient Mariner is insane, love that classically trained metal.

It sucks that the Blaze era didn't figure things out until Brave New World when Bruce came back. BNW nailed the "repeat chorus for the rest of the song" formula and it's cool seeing the two styles of Maiden mesh like that. We still got "Sign of the Cross" at least which is the best Blaze track even if that means his era is ridiculously frontloaded.

I am listening to the new Judas Priest album. I'm liking it a lot? That said I'm not really super invested in them so I don't have much in the way of expectations. What's their best work/period though?

nthing British Steel and Screaming For Vengeance being their best non-Painkiller work. I'd say from Sad Wings through Painkiller is a solid run, barring missteps like Point of Entry and Turbo.

Point of Entry has a few solid tracks in "Don't Go" and "Solar Angels," and the Ripper Owens era ain't without merit either; "Death Row," "Brain Dead," "Bullet Train," and "Cathedral Spires" are the highlights of Jugulator, and Demolition has "Feed on Me" and "In Between."

Point of Entry also has Hot Rockin' which is metal royalty in my book.

I love Judas Priest. They're my favorite classic metal band. Even their worst song, which is Parental Guidance and no one can argue with me about that, is still better than the majority of what's out there in that genre.

I'll have to comb back through these albums again, it's been a hot minute.

Priest was the first band my friend and I went through in college, just taking in classic metal bands' discographies, and they remained one of the best ones we went through next to Motorhead.

Thanks for all the responses! I do like bands with consistent good output throughout the years...

If you're looking for another consistent discography, Motorhead's is drat near immaculate. It's an upward slope that plateaus in a very good spot.

Lemmy had a way with his lyrics, he was a metal poet, especially the title track for Orgasmatron.

My picks for best 3 albums from them are Ace of Spades, 1916, and Inferno.
